Boogie Nights
Notes: Before ‘Magnolia’ and ‘There will be blood’, it is with this movie that Paul Thomas Anderson started to get some deserved attention. To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick and I went to see it because it seemed to be fun. Eventually, it turned out to be much better than I expected and, out of a topic which has produced some many lame comedies, Anderson managed to make made a really entertaining but also quite fascinating feature. I was also really impressed by the great cast involved. Especially for Mark Wahlberg, he will eventually get his breakthrough thanks to this movie and it is a real shame that he doesn’t make such movies anymore. Anyway, eventually, even though it tends to be overlooked nowadays, I really loved the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Paul Thomas Anderson’s work.

An average movie

“At some point, I came across this movie and I thought it could be neat. Well, eventually, it turned out to be one of the most messed up Christmas movie I have ever seen but even though the whole thing definitely had some potential, it didn’t really work for me, I’m afraid. At the end of the day,” read more

A good movie

“Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about Felix Van Groeningen, I was really glad to finally watch one of his movies. Eventually, I was certainly not disappointed and I will definitely check his other movies when I have the opportunity. Still, even though I did like the damned thing, there ” read more

A very good movie

“When I was kid, I have watched this movie so many times. Indeed, one of my aunts had it on VHS and, each time we would visit her, I would watch it, even after I saw it at least 20 times. Of course, you might argue that my high rating is overly generous and based solely on pure nostalgia but, even th” read more

An average movie

“Even though this movie seems to be rather forgotten, especially abroad, I remember very well when it was released in France. Indeed, even though it was already the 4th directing effort for Josiane Balasko, it was her first big box-office hit as a director. With this in mind, I thought I might as wel” read more

Notes: From time to time, you always meet someone that will argue that this movie is actually the best ever made. To be honest, I always had a hard time to get what was really the fuss about this flick. I mean, I will have to admit it, it is a very good néo-noir feature, probably even the very best one but could the best néo-noir feature also manage to be one of the very best movies ever made? I actually doubt it. The issue I have with this flick is that it is so well made, so slick, it might be actually be too faithful to the genre to be actually really remarkable, at least, that’s my opinion. Still, it remains a really solid flick nonetheless, easily the best thing ever made by Curtis Hanson who never managed to reach this level in his career again. Concerning this cast, it was pretty damned amazing (Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, James Cromwell, Danny DeVito, David Strathairn) and they all gave some of the best performances in their career.

“Before this movie was released, there was a pretty good buzz about it but, eventually, it didn’t get much love and it is Sofia Coppola’s lowest rated movie so far. Even so, I was quite eager to check the damned thing and it turned out to be a decent watch. Indeed, it was an intriguing story and ” read more

chosen by Peter Notes: Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about Felix Van Groeningen, I was really glad to finally watch one of his movies. Eventually, I was certainly not disappointed and I will definitely check his other movies when I have the opportunity. Still, even though I did like the damned thing, there were still a couple of things that did bother me. First of all, even though it was a decent tale, it was nothing really original and, above all, it was all rather predictable. On top of that, Frank, the older brother, was never presented as an actual asset for this business and, in my opinion, instead of showing him constantly getting high and having sex with some random girls, they should have balanced this character a little bit more because, this way, it was nearly impossible to root for the guy. Still, it was quite exhilarating to see those misfits running their own business and it was quite interesting to see their neverending struggle between rules and freedom, between chaos and order and between creation and destruction. Furthermore, Van Groeningen has a real talent for adding everywhere some nice details (like the left eye of the younger brother) creating a genuine authentic feeling in the process. (Mar. 2016)

A good movie

“Almost 40 years after this movie, Baz Luhrmann came up with an ambitious remake with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role but even though the whole thing had some potential, I still preferred this version though. Still, even though I did like this movie, it was still missing something to become truly” read more
