Nothing Sacred (1937)
Notes: I must admit that I was actually really positively surprised by the first act. Indeed, the intro was not bad but, above all, as soon as Wally Cook got to Warsaw, this movie became actually quite hilarious. It’s too bad that it didn’t last for long though. Indeed, from the moment Carole Lombart got introduced, it became so much less interesting. I know, Lombart was apparently a major screw-ball comedy legend and, in fact, I’m not blaming her. Before she came around, I just loved the interaction between Cook and the inhabitants of this fictional little city though but it was obviously not what this movie was about and I’m afraid I just didn’t care much about this flimsy concept. Basically, the idea was that everybody was supposed to think that this woman was terminally ill but I thought it was rather odd and/or annoying that nobody would notice or mention that she actually looked fine. Sure, you could argue that screwball comedies always had some far-fetched even borderline idiotic storylines, that it is inherent to the genre, but, as far as I was concerned, it was just too paper thin in this case. The fact that Wally Cook and Hazel Flagg both started to act hysterically from the moment they met each other, again something which was supposed to be hilarious, was also hardly entertaining. It’s too bad because the first 15 mins were actually really fun.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick, in fact, I was planning to watch ‘PĂ©pĂ© le Moko’ on Netflix but it was apparently removed maybe a week before, so I decided to watch instead this movie also released in 1937. Well, I must admit that I was actually really posit” read more

“Even though this movie was a huge flop when it was released, at least with the audience, since it was directed by David Lowery and since it was available on Disney+, I still wanted to check it out. Well, to be honest, I thought it was a rather difficult to judge the damned thing after all. Sure, it ” read more

“Since I have always been a huge fan of Pixar, I was quite eager to check this movie, even if it eventually didn’t make much waves when it was released. Well, it is rather sad that the previous Pixar productions (‘Soul’, ‘Luca’, ‘Turning Red’) were all released directly to Disney+ when ” read more

Murder Mystery 2
Notes: First of all, it didn’t strike me before but Adam Sandler basically gave here his own cheap spin on the ‘Knives Out’ concept but, on the other hand, you might argue that both franchises started in 2019 so it was probably not on purpose. Anyway, even if it was far from being one of the worst movies I have seen starring Sandler, it was still pretty weak though. At least, it wasn’t worse than the first installment, I’ll give you that. In fact, I have to admit that, this time around, Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston were now actually a convincing couple which wasn’t really the case the first time around. Unfortunately, it was probably the only thing that really worked in this movie. Indeed, the characters were just boring and poorly developed and the story was hardly entertaining. In fact, I have to admit that it wasn’t such a bad idea to have them becoming private detectives, it actually made sense following the events of the previous movie, and to have them being very bad at this job seemed to be a no-brainer. However, once again, the writing was just so lazy and the makers did really nothing interesting and/or funny with this concept. I mean, somehow, they still managed to crack the case way too easily and their incompetence was never properly exploited. Seriously, it is the kind of movie you are actually glad that they last only 90 mins because it is over before it really starts to get on your nerves.

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Mark Wahlberg and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, Wahlberg has never been shy about his religious background (it even made him regretting to star in ‘Boog” read more

Barbie
Notes: It actually reminded me of 'The Super Mario Bros Movie' which was also released the same year as both movies were dealing with some seemingly hopeless and lame topics but both movies turned out to be extremely successful. In this case, I have to admit that it was quite impressive how much Greta Gerwig managed to get out of this material. Furthermore, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, probably the best candidates to represent some really life Barbie and Ken, were perfectly cast. In fact, Robbie turned out to be rather bland after all but she wasn't helped by the fact that she had to play 'Stereotypical' Barbie while Gosling got to play some kind of unhinged frustrated moronic version of Ken and he definitely stole the show in the process. Concerning the rest of the movie, Gerwig tried to tie a seemingly deep critic of our sexist male-dominated world with a very generic tale of Barbie adventuring into the real world but, while it was a decent attempt, it was a little bit too much. Indeed, even though it was and still is the most famous doll ever produced, it is still only a plastic doll after all. Eventually, did it really deserve to be such a massive blockbuster success? Well, it seems that the audience got tired of all these sequels, reboots and remakes and we are apparently all yearning for something more original, even though, in this case, it was dealing with one of the most popular toys in the world so it was still some famous IP.
