A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it seemed to have a decent reputation, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, I just saw yesterday ‘Dark Victory’, another classic starring Bette Davis. Basically, back in those days, these movies were really tailor-made a” read more

Dark Victory
Notes: To be honest, I had a rather hard time to get into the damned thing. Sure, I have to admit that the fact that I did watch on it on the BBC probably didn’t help. Indeed, I was rather confused by the opening scenes and it took me a while to figure out what was going on. Still, I think it went beyond that. Anyway, the biggest asset of this movie was obviously Bette Davis and she was nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Actress in a Leading Role for this movie (in fact, she would be nominated 8 times in 10 years back then which is quite impressive). And, indeed, there is no doubt that Davis was really good here (it was apparently her favorite role). However, I don’t think this movie had much else to offer after all. I mean, the plot was actually really thin. Basically, you were introduced to this rich young woman who was right away seriously ill and, for the rest of the movie, we see how she handles this predicament which was, as far as I was concerned, not really fascinating, in spite of Davis’s efforts. Furthermore, even though the rest of the cast was praised, I thought all their characters were really flat. Still, it was rather fun to see Humphrey Bogart a couple of years before he got his big break with ‘The Maltese Falcon’. It was especially interesting to see him playing such an emasculated man when he will be mostly remembered for playing some major tough guys.

Asteroid City
Cast : Edward Norton, Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Adrien Brody, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Steve Carell, Liev Schreiber, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, Jason Schwartzman, Jeff Goldblum, Matt Dillon, Willem Dafoe, Maya Hawke What was it about? Following a writer on his world famous fictional play about a grieving father who travels with his tech-obsessed family to small rural Asteroid City to compete in a junior stargazing event, only to have his world view disrupted forever. My two cents: Well, following 'The French Dispatch', it was definitely another decent effort from the American director, no doubt about it, but it was definitely again not one of his best movies, I'm afraid. Visually, as usual with Anderson, it looked amazing though as each scene was turned into some kind of gorgeous painting. Concerning the cast, well, it's obvious that they had a blast with this material, especially with the dialogues which were often quite hilarious. Eventually, the only issue I had was with the story. Indeed, even though it seems that there was a lot going on during each individual scene, as a whole, I had the feeling that it was in fact about nothing much after all. It was like focusing on the guy who wrote the play this story was supposedly based on, sure, I have to admit that it was fun but, as far as I was concerned, it didn't have much added value. Basically, this movie displayed an endless succession of nice ideas but it might have been more satisfying to keep only a few of these ideas and actually develop them. I have to admit that I still enjoyed the damned thing though. My rating: 7/10 Check the full review

Oppenheimer
Cast : Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Alden Ehrenreich, Jason Clarke, Kenneth Branagh, Josh Hartnett, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Dane DeHaan, Josh Peck, Benny Safdie, Rami Malek, Olivia Thirlby, Casey Affleck, Gary Oldman What was it about? The story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. My two cents: A usual with Christopher Nolan, this movie it was visually really neat and the directing was top-notch. Above all, Oppenheimer was such a fascinating character, easily one of the best characters Nolan as ever worked with. His quest to create the first atomic bomb was also so interesting because it would change our world forever and its impact is still topical nowadays. So, the story was great but I’m not sure Nolan’s approach completely worked. Indeed, at times, it felt as if you either needed to have read the book or have Wikipedia at all times open or that you had to be a massive history buff to keep track of everything and above all everybody involved. Concerning the cast, well, Cillian Murphy was rightfully praised, the guy was amazing and easily delivered one of the best performances of his career. I wish I could say the same about the rest of the cast though. It’s not that anyone was bad, I was more bothered by the fact that so many showed up for barely nothing. It was especially frustrating with Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh who all seemed to have some more substantial characters and, yet, they were given so little to do after all. Even Robert Downey Jr., after getting stuck playing Tony Stark for so many years, who was finally given the opportunity to do something else, didn’t really impress me because the focus on this conflict with Lewis Strauss was, in my opinion, a rather poor idea. Anyway, even though I might seem harsh, the damned thing was still really good though. My rating: 08/10 Check the full review
