Your Place or Mine
Notes: Basically, it strongly reminded me of 'The Holiday', another romantic comedy with a decent reputation which already didn't impress me at the time. The tricky thing with this movie is that it needed to convince the viewers that the two leads were completely in love with each other without, first, showing how they actually fell in love and, second, without having them actually spending some time with each other except on the phone and face-timing. Well, in my opinion, it wasn't really convincing, that's for sure. I mean, I do believe that Ashton Kutcher's character was actually in love, they were enough hints, but I don't really know why. For Reese Witherspoon's character, it was even worse though. Indeed, through the whole thing, there was not a single moment during which she gave the impression that she was actually in love with her old friend. In fact, it was even worse, it seems that she was completely into another guy who was attractive, charming, rich and shared the same interests. However, suddenly, during the 3rd act, she dumped this other guy when she found out that Peter was actually in love with her and not because of her own feelings which was rather awkward. At least, even though Ashton Kutcher is still a terribly bland actor, Reese Witherspoon is still so charming and charismatic after all these years. I also love the fact that she looks so lovely and, yet, at the same, she still is convincing as a middle-aged woman without plastic surgery, heavy use of a personal trainer or starving herself.

“When I heard that this movie got some rather weak reviews, I was rather skeptical about the damned thing but since I have always been a huge fan of this franchise, I still wanted to check it out though. Well, to be honest, I don’t think it was so bad after all. Concerning the intro, I actually had” read more

Heaven Can Wait
Notes: To be honest, eventually, I had a hard time to connect with the damned thing after all. Basically, it was the story of a man from his birth to his death and the guy was convinced that he should go to hell because he spent his whole life seducing pretty much every single woman he met. Well, the conclusion provided by this movie was that being a serial womanizer (maybe even a sex-addict?) was not such a crime after all, in fact, the guy did make many of this women really happy, according to Satan himself. Well, I’m not sure I would agree with this assessment. At least, it was really neat to see the lovely Gene Tierney who must be one of my favorite classic actresses, some kind of vintage version of Milla Jovovich, and she was just a perfect choice to play this character. However, the actor I enjoyed the most was Charles Coburn though. Indeed, I have been focusing recently on movies released in the 40’s and I kept seeing this guy in many of these movies. Well, he always steals the show and this movie was no different. Still, I have to admit that Don Ameche, in arguably his most famous role, was also pretty good but I’m afraid I didn’t care much for the old-fashioned and outdated views displayed in this movie.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it had been nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, I thought I might as well check it out. Even though I expected it to be another version of ‘Heaven Can Wait’ (1978) and ‘Down to Earth’ (2001), in spite of its title, it ” read more

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Renny Harlin, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though Harlin's work has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, to be honest, when was the last time that the guy did deliver something which was slight” read more

Drive-Away Dolls
Release date (U.S.) : 23 February 2024 directed by : Ethan Coen with : Pedro Pascal, Margaret Qualley, Matt Damon, Beanie Feldstein plot : Jamie regrets her breakup with her girlfriend, while Marian needs to relax. In search of a fresh start, they embark on an unexpected road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals. Why do I want to see this ? To be honest, I still haven't watched Joel Coen's 'Macbeth' even if it did get some solid reviews but I have to admit that I'm not exactly dying to see yet another adaptation of this Shakespeare play (I think I have seen already 3 of 4 other versions of this story by now). Anyway, the Coen brothers have always been some of the best directors around so I'm definitely curious to see what Ethan Coen will deliver on his own without his brother involved. My verdict: I have noticed that it didn't get much love when it was released and, indeed, I'm afraid it was a real mess. I gave Ethan Coen some slack because I hope (or wish) that this messiness was done on purpose but, even so, the damned thing was just pretty weak. The best example would be this couple of lesbians going on this road-trip. Indeed, on one hand, I had never seen Geraldine Viswanathan before but I thought she was quite fascinating to behold. Sure, her character seemed uptight but I thought she was still charismatic and I loved the way she played it so understated with mostly her eyes and body language. However, on the other hand, you had Margaret Qualley who also did deliver a solid performance but her character was just so loud and way too obnoxious. It was obviously done on purpose but it doesn't mean that I have to find this approach interesting or entertaining. Finally, it was already rather dubious that these 2 girls would be friend at all but to make the viewers believe that they would actually end up together was rather preposterous. Concerning the rest of the cast, none of the other characters made an impression, except for Beanie Feldstein who really nailed it and stole the show every time she was on the screen. About the story itself, I always believed that the road-trip might be the laziest genre ever but this one was particularly convoluted and unconvincing.
