A good movie

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 9 January 2020 10:31 (A review of The Two Popes)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie since I have a weak spot for Fernando Meirelles’s work and since it was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, I really liked the damned thing and it has been a while since Meirelles had released such an enjoyable movie. First of all, even though I’m not a religious man, I think that religion is a fascinating subject but I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of the Pope though. However, this movie gave not one but two fascinating portraits of two completely different Popes. Above all, the conversation these two characters had were just really spellbinding, also thanks to Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce who gave some of their best performances for this movie. Of course, at first, you would probably be rooting for Jorge Bergoglio who was such a humble man, opened to the world and eager to reform the Catholic church but I was surprised by how much depth was also given to Ratzinger. Eventually, the success of the movie was to display these 2 men not only as spiritual leaders but also as full fledged human beings. The only issue I had was that the whole thing was probably too long. Indeed, in my opinion, the material didn’t require more than 2 hours of running time but it wasn’t a major issue though. Anyway, to conclude, it was easily one of the best movies I have seen dealing with this subject and  it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 8 January 2020 11:54 (A review of The Captive)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Atom Egoyan’s work, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it is usually considered as a low point in Egoyan’s career and, unfortunately, I’m afraid I will have to agree on this. Seriously, it has been a while since I have seen such a convoluted thriller. The first issue was that they went for a random chronology which is usually a rather useless gimmick to make a movie look edgier than it actually is. On top of that, there was just so much stuff that didn’t make much sense. For example, why would this pedophile ring would go through so much trouble just to spy this mother? Why would this creepy guy have this poor girl act/read some cryptic text? Why would they allow her to see her father for a few minutes? To make things worse, the main plot was completely side-tracked by what happened to Rosia Dawson’s character. It’s too bad because the damned thing had some potential and it could have worked if they had chosen a more straightforward approach but, instead, the end-result was basically some lame mix of ‘Trust’ with ‘Room’. Anyway, to conclude, even if I have seen worse, the damned thing was still pretty weak and I don’t think it is really worth a look, even if you are interested in Atom Egoyan’s work like I do.

A good movie

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 7 January 2020 11:14 (A review of A Star Is Born)

To be honest, when I heard they were coming up with a 4th version of this story, I can’t say I was really excited by this idea. However, since it had been very well received, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I was still not blown away by the story. Indeed, it was still rather generic and, above all, they could have removed the ‘evil’ producer who was just lame and unnecessary. Still, I have to admit that I still did enjoy the damned thing, in fact, I liked it even more than the classic version starring Judy Garland. Indeed, what made this movie really worked were the really strong performances from both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga who had some great chemistry together. Concerning Bradley Cooper, I wasn’t really surprised as the guy has slowly became one of the most interesting actors at work nowadays, something I didn’t expect following his breakthrough with ‘The Hangover’. Above all, I was quite impressed by Lady Gaga. Of course, you might argue that to play a singer was not such a huge stretch for her but many singers tried something similar before and failed miserably (Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey,…). Eventually, I thought she was terribly convincing as Ally who was in fact nothing like Lady Gaga herself and, as I mentioned before, her chemistry with Bradley Cooper was really neat. Finally, I really loved many of the songs played during this movie which was a rare thing for me. While watching this flick, I couldn’t help thinking that it was a pity that Lady Gaga had spent much of her career with some rather annoying pop songs when she is in fact a really strong singer. Anyway, to conclude, even I still think it was nothing original, I have to admit that it was actually a really decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 6 January 2020 09:41 (A review of A Cure for Wellness)

Since I have seen all the other movies directed by Gore Verbinski, I thought I might as well check his last directing effort. Well, from an aesthetic point of view, it was probably Verbinski’s most beautiful movie to look at with some really intriguing scenes and awesome camera set-up. Unfortunately, even though the story was fairly entertaining, it wasn’t really amazing though. Above all, the biggest mistake they made was that the damned thing was just too long. Indeed, 150 minutes for after all a rather basic thriller taking place in a spa was really way too much. As a result, there were a bunch of random and rather pointless scenes during which the movie was flirting with the mindf*ck genre (the best example would be when, out of nowhere, a female employee gets topless and her male co-worker starts to whack off in front of her). Unfortunately, Verbinski is no David Lynch and it was never really convincing.  So, in my opinion, they could have easily removed 1 hour of running time instead of getting lost on the way and creating some massive plot-holes. Concerning Dane DeHaan, he was a fine choice but it’s too bad that there was not much consistency in his character’s behaviour. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch, especially visually speaking, and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 4 January 2020 01:33 (A review of Hated: GG Allin the Murder Junkies)

When I heard about this movie, it sounded really interesting so I was quite eager to check it out. The fact that it was Todd Phillips's directing debut and the fact that it was miles away from his usual raunchy comedies made the damned thing even more intriguing to me. Well, even though GG Allin had quite a notorious reputation, I was expecting him to be a grotesque and pathetic guy ready to do any stunts just to get some attention but I thought he was actually quite charismatic and, in my opinion, he was a real and genuine punk rocker. I have to admit that I never really cared much about real Punk from a musical point of view but I always admired the attitude and way of thinking of Punk fans. The other advantage of watching this movie was that you could experience his live shows without actually being physically present  because I don't think I would have dared to go to one of his concerts as the outcome was always so unpredictable and seriously hazardous. Anyway, to conclude, it turned out to be a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in this suject.

A good movie

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 31 December 2019 10:43 (A review of Kill the Messenger)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, even if the movie itself was not really amazing, I’m afraid, it still turned out to be a fascinating story though. Basically, as long as they were focusing on Gary Webb’s investigation, the whole thing was slightly difficult to follow because of the rapid-fire dialogues and the number of characters involved but it was ultimately quite spellbinding to behold. However, at least half of the movie was about vindicating Gary Webb’s name who definitely deserved it but, to be honest, it was not as interesting as what he had discovered which was truly quite mind-blowing. The main issue, as far as I was concerned, was that Webb himself complained that suddenly the focus was put on him instead of his investigation but that was in fact what this movie exactly did as well. Indeed, in the second half, it was only about how Webb had been mistreated and his actual investigation fell into the background which was too bad in my opinion. Still, I really liked the realistic approach they took and even if it never reached the level of ‘All the President's Men’, it was still probably one of the best movies I have seen in this genre. Anyway, to conclude, it was a really solid thriller dealing with investigative journalism and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 27 December 2019 10:13 (A review of Jumanji: The Next Level)

Since Nick, my step-son, really enjoyed the last Jumanji, he was quite eager to see this sequel. Well, I have to admit that, once again, I was rather positively surprised by the end-result. Indeed, the most difficult thing was to find a reason why they would ever go back but they actually nailed it and it made sense that Spencer with his his low self-esteem would be eager to crawl back into the skin of Bravestone. On top of that, the new levels were quite awesome and Awkwafina was a great new avatar (the horse was rather lame though). Finally, it was a smart move to bring 2 new characters who were some clueless old guys and it was even smarter to scramble most of the avatars. So, it seemed that they had covered the hardest part of the work but, still, they made a couple of mistakes preventing the whole thing to completely work. First of all, like many similar blockbusters, the running time was just too long resulting in some rather dull moments. Another mistake was to switch again the avatars for the final act. Indeed, Eddie-Bravestone was just really hilarious and we didn't need to get back Spencer-Bravestone or the other combinations from the previous movie. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still really fun and entertaining and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 26 December 2019 12:50 (A review of Kidnapping Mr. Heineken)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, at first, I thought it would be another misguided and completely unnecessary American remake. Ok, it was still not really an improvement on the Dutch version and it was also rather annoying to see all these Dutch characters speaking in English but this version was actually slighty better than I expected. At least, they kept the real names of the protagonists but Peter R. de Vries, the guy who wrote the book which inspired this movie, still disapproved the end-result as it was not accurate enough with many of the historical facts. Still, I was quite intrigued by how these working-class guys managed to deliver one of the most famous kidnapping cases ever committed. Unfortunately, instead of developing these interesting real-life characters, we never got the chance to know them and, instead, they gave us some rather pathetic supposedly funny one-liners. Same thing with Freddy Heineken. Indeed, Anthony Hopkins was a great choice to play this part and he did whatever he could when he was on the screen but he was simply not given enough time to deliver anything really worthwhile. Anyway, to conclude, I still think it was a decent remake and I guess it is worth a look but there is no doubt that they could have deliver something so much better with this fascinating material.

An average movie

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 26 December 2019 08:21 (A review of Sing)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from the damned thing but since it had been been fairly successful at the box-office, I thought I might as well check it out. I have to admit that I was also intrigued by the fact that Garth Jennings was directing here his first animated feature. Well, even if the concept did seem rather lame to me, I have to admit that it actually turned out to be a decent watch after all. First of all, the animation was really neat but, at this point, I wouldn't expect less from Illumination Entertainment. Above all, I really enjoyed the singing and dancing which was quite surprising since I usually don't like musicals at all. I guess the master move from Illumination was to go for some very catchy hit songs. However, the main story was still rather weak though and he didn't help that they had some many different characters involved. At first, it seemed promising but each character had its own half-baked sub-plots so it didn't really work and, as a result, the whole thing was pretty messy. In fact, if they have pushed it even further and make it completely wacky, it could have been really neat though. Anyway, to conclude, even if it could and probably should have been seriously underwhelming, it was actually not bad at all and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 4 years, 10 months ago on 24 December 2019 10:24 (A review of The Tall Man)

I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Jessica Biel and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, during the first half, I had a hard time to care about the damned thing as it seemed to be a rather generic and predictable thriller. But, then, they completely turned around the story with an interesting twist and, afterwards, I have to admit that I was intrigued and wondering how it would actually end up. Unfortunately, the conclusion was rather far-fetched and underwhelming. First of all, even though they did give some explanation, some huge chunks were kept in the dark which was rather lazy. The most frustrating thing was how they clearly refused to develop any character, especially the main one. For example, how did she end up doing this and why? Apparently, her husband had been a prominent member of this community but how did he fit in all this? On top of that, there were some massive plot-holes. Indeed, it was rather ridiculous to make us believe that such children would just switch from parents and family without saying or doing anything about it. Also, why didn't they kidnap very young babies instead? Finally, what was the point of raising them for a while on the very same location where they were snatched instead of sending them away right away? Anyway, to conclude, even if the concept didn't really work, the mid-twist was actually entertaining and I think it is worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.
