A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 4 April 2019 08:05 (A review of The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy, I was quite eager to check it out. The whole point of this concept was to tell the same storyĀ twiceĀ from 2 different points of the view and, I can tell you this, after watching this flick, I canā€™t wait to see ā€˜Himā€™. Beside this concept, the makers took another interesting approach. Basically, in most of movies, you have very often the characters talking about stuff that they already know just to make sure that the viewers are up to speed. Well, thatā€™s something that was completely avoided in this movie resulting in some much more realistic dialogues and characters. On the other hand, this approach did have its drawback and they probably pushed this idea too far. Indeed, as a result, the characters almost never had some straightforward conversations and instead they almost only talked about some anecdotes only thinly related with the actual story and, at some point, it became slightly frustrating . Furthermore, if the amazing Viola Davis managed to do so much with so little screentime, it was rather disappointing that Isabelle Hupert was again completely wasted playing another completely underwritten character in a US production like this one. On the other hand, Jessica Chastain, who remains one of the best actresses of her generation, was once again quite spellbinding to behold. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was a solid drama and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 3 April 2019 10:35 (A review of Tracks)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Mia Wasikowska, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, thanks to this movie, you get to see some gorgeous and even hypnotic Australian landscapes and only therefore I think the damned thing was absolutely worth a look. Wasikowska was also a perfect choice to play the main character and she delivered here another solid performance. I also liked the way that they didnā€™t try to compromise this interesting woman by trying to go really deep in her thoughts and feelings but while I respect this approach, it actually backfired Iā€™m afraid. I mean, it seems that the makers tried to be faithfull regarding the way this woman did interact with people (or how she didnā€™t interact with them, to be more accurate) and they also avoided to add some far-fetched obstacles just to make the whole thing more spectacular. However, as a result, you only get to see this girl endlessly walking around with her camels in these amazing landscapes but not much more than that. They also tried to add from time to time some flashback scenes to give the viewers some background but, eventually, even Robyn Davidson didnā€™t really know why she took this journey and, when she was done, it didnā€™t feel that she had much evolved after all. In fact, I actually wondered what happened to her afterwards. Did she manage to get back in the mainstream society or did she struggle to function as any average person? But I guess that would be a complete different story. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, I thought it was still pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 2 April 2019 11:47 (A review of Solo: A Star Wars Story)

I already saw this movie but since I have it on Blu-ray and since I just bought an awesome new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. Even though this movie turned out to be a flop at the box-office, a first in Stars Wars so far successful history, well, to be honest, I have to admit that I was actually positively surprised by the damned thing. I mean, sure, it was nothing really groundbreaking but when was the last time a Stars Wars flick had been anything really revolutionary? On the other hand, pretty much like ā€˜Rogue Oneā€™ which remains by far the best one of the new Star Wars movies, it was so refreshing that it wasnā€™t dealing with the Skywalker bloodline. Above all, the damned thing was actually quite entertaining. Indeed, even though Star Wars has always focused on the Skywalkers, Han Solo has always been much more fun and charismatic and this movie nailed so many landmarks moments concerning this iconic character such as how he met Chewbacca or how he discoverered the Millenium Falcon. Furthermore, even though I heard that Alden Ehrenreich had been criticized for his performance, I think he was actually not bad at all and he made for a convincing younger version of this character. In fact, I actually enjoyed all the characters, except for Qi'ra. Indeed, I wonā€™t blame Emilia Clarke but her character was just seriously underwritten. In my opinion, it was rather obvious that they didnā€™t really know what to do with this girl as the cloud of mystery around her never got resolved properly. Ā Concerning the story itself, like many similar blockbusters, they did try to cover too much ground in one single movie and they could have easily split the whole thing into 3 movies. Furthermore, each scene was rather awkwardly connected with the next one, the flow of the whole thing was rather weak and it probably had to do with the messy production. Of course, I wonder how this movie would have turned out to be with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller still on board and itā€™s a pity that Disney went from some of the most entertaining directors at work nowadays to the safest and most bland guy from the bunch. On the other hand, I have to admit that Ron Howard has done actually a solid job after all. Anyway, to conclude, I donā€™t think that this movie deserves such a bad reputation, it is actually a decent Star Wars flick and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 31 March 2019 08:26 (A review of Dumbo)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but 'Dumbo', the original animated version, was the first movie my youngest daughter ever watched, so, I thought it would be pretty cool to see this new version together. On the other hand, it is quite sad to see that Tim Burton is still struggling to finally come up with something new and it is rather difficult to believe that, 20 years ago, he used to be one of the most interesting directors in the business. Anyway, coming back to the movie itself, well, it was a decent watch but not much more than that, I'm afraid. The biggest issue was that the original animated movie was really short so, obviously, they had to expand it somehow. Unfortunately, even if it could have been an opportunity to come up with something new and interesting, they basically kept repeating the same thing over and over again. Furthermore, I didn't mind that they focused this time around on the human characters but they were all rather boring. For example, it was pretty neat to see Michael Keaton working again with Burton and he obviously had some fun but his character was just rather tedious. Finally, even though they needed to expand it, a running time of 110 mins was just way too long for such a simple tale. Anyway, to conclude, I still think it would be a decent watch for the young kids but there is no doubt that Tim Burton has here delivered another forgettable directing effort.Ā

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 31 March 2019 07:20 (A review of Suite FranƧaise (2014))

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but, after watching 'Focus' a couple of days ago, I was quite eager to watch another movie starring Margot Robbie and this one was available on Netflix so I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I didn't care much for the damned thing after all. I mean, it was rather well made and there was a nice cast involved but, by now, I have seen my share of WWII dramas and this one turned out to be just too generic and predictable. Concerning the cast, it was probably the best thing about this movie (Michelle Williams, Kristin Scott Thomas, Matthias Schoenaerts, Margot Robbie, Ruth Wilson, Sam Riley, Alexandra Maria Lara, Lambert Wilson) but, unfortunately, all their characters were barely developed. As a result, even the main character was barely interesting to me. The fact that they used also so much voice-over to tell her thoughts and feelings was also pretty weak. Eventually, the only one who still managed to do something interesting with his character was Matthias Schoenaerts. Indeed, with no voice-over whatsoever, with a still rather stereotypical character, he still managed to be quite spellbinding to behold. Anyway, to conclude, it seems that the story of how the book this movie was based on came out was actually more interesting than the story itself but, in spite of ifs flaws, I still think it is worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 30 March 2019 08:21 (A review of Rollerball (1975))

Since this movie has a rather solid reputation as a cult-classic, I was quite eager to check it out. In fact, I did see at some point the awful remake they made about 15 years ago and I hoped this original version would be much better. Well, to be honest, even if I still believe that the concept is great, it didn't turn out to be a great movie after all. Basically, even if it wasn't completely dumb as the remake was, it wasn't really smart either, I'm afraid. Futhermore, even if James Caan really had the looks to play this character, his performance was still rather bland. On the other hand, he wasn't helped by the fact that his character was rather poorly written. Indeed, I never understood why was the guy so obsessed about refusing to quit a seemingly violent, dangerous and even rather stupid game. Futhermore, the way Caan played the character during the various games, it felt as if he stood there wondering what the hell was going on and what the hell was he doing here. Of course, he would utter at least twice 'I love this game!' which was just really heavy-handed and not convincing whatsoever. The rest of the movie dealing with this dystopian world also had some potential but it was still rather half-baked. I mean, sure, it wasn't a bad idea to have your main character looking for some answers, except maybe when he is a rather dim-witted professional football, I mean, rollerball player. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 27 March 2019 10:54 (A review of My Mother Mia madre)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Nanni Moretti, I was quite eager to check it out. To be honest, I have to admit that, even though I have always admired Morettiā€™s work, somehow, I always had a hard time to really connect with his movies and this one wasnā€™t really different, Iā€™m afraid. I mean, the whole thing was quite realistic and there has always been some intimate quality in his movies but I was never really sure what it was trying to achieve exactly. For example, the whole thing was apparently partly autobiographical but why did he choose to have the director being played by a woman? It didnā€™t help either that the characters were interesting but not really fascinating. Even worse was the situation with John Turturro. Indeed, it was pretty neat that such a fine American actor would be working with Moretti but, unfortunately, he was wasted playing a supposedly funny but in fact completely obnoxious character. On the other hand, Margherita Buy, whoĀ I had never seen her before but who's apparently a very famous actress in Italy, was really charismatic and she was able to convey so much emotion only with her beautiful eyes. Anyway, to conclude, even if I wasnā€™t completely blown away by the whole thing, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Nanni Morettiā€™s work.Ā

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 26 March 2019 09:44 (A review of Focus)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I have always had a weak spot for movies dealing with con artists and this movie was probably the sexiest one I have seen in this genre. Indeed, the whole thing looked really nice and, above all, Smith and Robbie had such a great chemistry together, it has been a while since I have seen such a charismatic couple. Unfortunately, even though they got some ingredients right, the whole thing didnā€™t really impress me after all. Indeed, eventually, the main issue I had was with the story which turned out to be rather disappointing. Like I mentioned before, Smith and Robbie were fine but it seems that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa put too much focus on their relationship and not enough on the story itself. For example,Ā there was not really a main plot and, instead,Ā the whole thing was awkwardly divided into 2 different cons. I have to admit that the 1st con was not bad but it was obviously too short so they had to come up with a 2nd con. However, this 2nd con was pretty weak, in fact, it had not much to do with a con scam and it seemed to be just some common theft. To make things worse, Iā€™m pretty sure the twist at the end didn't really make sense and, above all, it actually slightly ruined Robbieā€™s character. Indeed, during the 2nd half, I was expecting her to be running some elaborate scam but, in fact, she was still working on some very low level. Above all, they pretty much reduced her to a disgruntled ex-girlfriend. Still, in spite of its flaws, Smith and Robbie were actually quite spellbinding to behold so I still think it is worth a look but the damned thing could have been so much better though.Ā

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 24 March 2019 01:23 (A review of Hope Springs)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, I was surprised by how lame it actually turned out to be. Basically, it was one of these ill-conceived romantic-comedies in which nothing work at all. Let's talk about the plot for example. It was about an English man who got so depressed after he found out that his girlfriend was marrying someone else that he went off to visit a city called Hope just because he liked the name. That wasn't exactly the strongest concept ever but, to make things worse, at some point, his ex-girlfriend showed up (which was completely spoiled by the fact that Minnie Driver was displayed everywhere on the promotional material) to tell him that the wedding was some kind of joke(!), and then tries to win him over again. I mean, seriously,Ā  was there anything in this summary that remotely sounded like a good idea? I don't think so. To make things worse, the characters were just rather poorly written. For example, Minnie Driver actually seemed to have fun with her role but there was nothing likeable about this woman and, even worse, there was absolutely no chemistry between her and the main character. On the other hand, HeatherĀ  Graham's character was not much better, I'm afraid. I mean, she was first introduced as some kind of therapist but this idea was dropped after 5 mins. Then, out of the blue, she finishes a bottle of liquor early in the morning and, 10 minutes later, she gets naked in front of a total stranger with no explanation whatsoever. At least, the main castĀ  (Colin Firth, Heather Graham, Minnie Driver) was quite charismatic but there is no doubt that it was one of the weakest romantic-comedies I have seen in quite some time and I don't think it is really worth a look.

Posted : 5 years, 7 months ago on 23 March 2019 11:55 (A review of Small Apartments)

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, the cast was indeed really neat (Billy Crystal, James Caan, Juno Temple, Peter Stormare, Johnny Knoxville, Rebel Wilson, James Marsden, Dolph Lundgren, Amanda Plummer, Rosie Perez, Saffron Burrows). Concerning the movie itself, well, it turned out to be a decent quirkie indie comedy but not much more than that, to be honest. That's an usual issue with such indie comedies with so many characters involved and such a rather short running time (about 90 mins), as a result, most of the characters turn out to be barely developed at all. In fact, even though you might expect the whole thing to be about the various tenants living in these crappy apartments, it actually did, but it is also focused on one of the tenants called Franklin Franklin and, as a result, there was a rather weak balance. I mean, if F. Franklin was supposed to be the main character, why even bother with the other sub-plots involving his neighbours? On the other hand, if this community was the main focus, why did they spend so much time on one of them? It didn't really help that none of the characters involved was really interesting or entertaining. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.
