An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 1 February 2019 10:19 (A review of The Girl on the Train)

To be honest, I didn’t have some really high expectations regarding this movie but since I have a weak spot for Emily Blunt, I was still eager to check it out. Well, once again, I was really impressed by Blunt who gave a really convincing performance as a major alcoholic. I also have to praise the make-up department who managed to tone down her natural gorgeousness and she really looked terribly unhealthy. Unfortunately, that was pretty much the only things that really worked in this movie and it turned out to be another rather half-baked thriller, I’m afraid. Indeed, first of all, even though the material was interesting, it was a mistake to have the main character spying someone who had a fairly close relationship with her ex-husband. In my opinion, it would have been much more interesting if Megan didn’t have any connection whatsoever with the main character. Even more problematic was the fact that they used this lame gimmick of hiding some crucial information until the last act. For example, the therapist was a huge diversion and it was kind of lame that they would show them discussing some very personal subjects but not the fact that Megan had a lover. Even worse was how Justin Theroux’s character suddenly completely changed from being a rather decent guy to a major oversexed psycho. Seriously, that was such a weak lazy gimmick. Anyway, to conclude, I still think it was worth a look only for Emily Blunt’s work but there is no denying that the whole thing was actually rather weak.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 31 January 2019 11:29 (A review of The Deep)

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but I was really curious to see Baltasar [Link removed - login to see][Link removed - login to see][Link removed - login to see]directing a movie in Island so I thought I might as well check it out. I have to admit that I actually didn’t  know anything about this flick before watching the damned thing but it turned out to be a rather incredible true story about an Icelandic fisherman who had to swim in the ice cold Atlantic ocean for about 6 hours after his ship sank. Seriously, what this guy did was just pretty insane and I have to give some credits to Ólafur Darri Ólafsson who gave here a really solid performance (seriously, it must have been hell for this guy to shoot all these scenes in the icy water). The directing by Kormákur was also solid but, in my opinion, in the 2nd half, he did struggle to do something interesting with the material. Indeed, in the 2nd half, after the main character managed to survive this ordeal, you get to see what happened afterwards which was in theory interesting but, unfortunately, Kormákur focused too much on the facts, on telling what exactly happened, instead of focusing more on what was going on in the mind of the main character. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was maybe nothing really groundbreaking, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 30 January 2019 09:45 (A review of This Must Be the Place)

Since I have always been a huge fan of Sean Penn, I was really eager to check this flick. Well, to be honest, as usual with Paolo Sorrentino, it was a rather tricky movie. Basically, the whole concept was about an old retired popstar who goes back to the USA to chase some Nazi and that was obviously some seriously far-out material. Sure, even though it didn't completely wander into major mindf*ck territory like a David Lynch movie, it still came close though. Maybe mindf*ck might not be the right word, maybe the whole thing just felt too random for me. Anyway, if Sorrentino's movies are often difficult to grasp, at least to me, there are still great to look at, there is always something really artistic about them  and I just love the way he sets up and shoots his scenes. Furthermore,  Sean Penn gave here another really impressive performance showing that he was, at least at the time, one of the most gifted actors around. Playing some kind of combination of Robert Smith and Ozzy Osbourne, it was a rather complex character but, thanks to Penn, he didn't feel like a caricature and he pretty much disappeared into this character. To be honest, I think I would have found the whole thing more interesting if they would have focused more on how a retired popstar goes on with their life when they don't have any work, challenges or goals to achieve instead of this really wild goose chase but there was still something quite mesmerizing about the damned thing. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn't completely work for me, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Paolo Sorrentino's or in Sean Penn's work.

A very good movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 29 January 2019 11:07 (A review of The Sisters Brothers)

Since I’m a big fan of Jacques Audiard, I was quite eager to check his next directing effort. Well, I wonder how Audiard ended up making a Western as his first English-speaking feature but what was even more surprising was that it turned out to be one of the best Westerns I have seen in years.  Apparently, even though this movie had been very well received, it was still a flop at the box-office but, as far as I was concerned, I really loved the damned thing. The first thing that impressed me was that Audiard had managed to create such a convincing time and place. Then, there was such a top cast involved (John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, Riz Ahmed)  and they all delivered some solid performances. About the plot, I don’t think it really mattered since the whole thing was mostly about the mood and the characters involved.  Above all, I just loved the interactions involving Charlie and Eli. Indeed, these characters and their relationship were fairly complex and sometimes actually quite hilarious. Concerning the other couple John Morris / Hermann Kermit Warm, to be honest, even though they were also interesting, their relationship could have been more developed as they were not as fascinating as the Sisters brothers.  Anyway, to conclude, I really liked this Western a lot and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Jacques Audiard’s work.

A bad movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 27 January 2019 12:18 (A review of Fire with Fire)

To be honest, I wasn' t expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Bruce Willis, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, somehow, the damned thing managed to be even weaker than I expected. First of all, even though Willis was displayed prominently on all the promotional material, in fact, he had a rather minor part which could have been easily removed or played by any third-rate actor so, like for most of his recent work, it was obviously another pay-check gig for him. Then, in spite of its title and the fact that the main character was a fireman, this movie had actually not much to do with firefighting which was rather disappointing. Instead, it was another tedious thriller dealing with some average guy going into the witness protection program. Seriously, the material was just so generic but, in the last act, it became even worse when the main character decided to go after the bag guys all by himself. Basically, it was just so ridiculous and completely lame. At least, the always dependable Vincent D'Onofrio did deliver another solid performance playing some psychopath but he probably should have used his talent for something more worthwhile. Anyway, to conclude, it turned out to be much weaker than I anticipated and it is definitely not worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 26 January 2019 07:45 (A review of The Book of Life)

I already saw this movie but since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out again. The first time around, since I kept hearing some really good things about this movie, I had some fairly high expectations. To be honest, it is rather unfair to judge this movie after watching 'Coco', another great Pixar production, when this movie was actually released 3 years before. Well, even though I really preferred 'Coco', I still enjoyed this other animated feature dealing with 'Dia de Muertos'. First of all, Jorge R. Gutiérrez came up with a really original animation style and the whole thing looked very nice. As I was watching this flick, I was wondering if it was based on an actual Mexican tale but it was in fact an original idea filled with some Mexican traditions. Fortunately, it worked well enough and it turned out to be fairly entertaining. Eventually, the only thing that bothered me was the rather weak intro in the museum. Indeed, in my opinion, it was a rather convoluted way to start up this story, it didn't have much added value and I wish they found another way to introduce this fascinating world to the audience. Fortunately, it wasn't a deal breaker and the rest of the movie was pretty neat. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, it turned out to be an original animated feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 25 January 2019 09:29 (A review of Damsels in Distress)

To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Greta Gerwig, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be a rather misguided quirky college comedy and I really struggled to care about the damned thing. Apparently, it seems that the basic idea what was to play around with the stereotypes around this genre and to focus on some characters who were not your usual ‘cool’ college kids but it actually seriously backfired. Indeed, it never worked above all because these characters  were never really interesting or entertaining after all. Furthermore, it was never clear what you should feel regarding these characters. Indeed, should we laugh about them? Should we feel sorry? Should we be inspired by them? At least, I have to admit that, in spite of the rather weak material, Greta Gerwig still managed to make her character intriguing which was rather impressive considering the fact that her character was actually rather weird and sometimes even downright obnoxious. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast was rather weak except for Analeigh Tipton who was not bad but, except for Violet, none of the characters were developed at all. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of a couple of good ideas and another solid performance by Greta Gerwig, the whole thing was just pretty weak and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 21 January 2019 09:31 (A review of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World)

To be honest, since I didn't care much for the previous installments, I wasn't expecting much with this new sequel but since my kids really wanted to see it, I thought we might as well check it out. Well, once again, I didn't really work for me, I'm afraid. I mean, sure, I have to admit it, the animation was fine but I didn't think it was really entertaining. Once again, you had some bad guys trying to destroy the dragons and, once again, you had some good guys trying to protect them and it all felt rather generic to me. It's too because the whole thing definitely had a darker edge than your usual DreamWorks production but it was unfortunately toned down to make sure it would still attract families with young kids. In fact, I actually figured out what bothered me the most with this franchise and I think it was actually Hiccup. It's not that he was such an awful main character, he did have a rather lame name though, it's just that the guy was just so bland and, as a result, I thought he was actually rather boring. At least, the conclusion was pretty neat but that was hardly enough as far as I was concerned. Anyway, to conclude, even though I will probably never understand the appeal of this franchise, I have to admit that this final installment was not bad and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A very good movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 20 January 2019 08:14 (A review of The Favourite)

This movie turned out to be a great start of this new year for our film club. Indeed, usually, to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of costume-dramas but since this movie had received some great reviews, I thought it would be a rather safe choice. Well, it didn't disappoint me, that's for sure, and I would go as far as saying that it is one of the best movies I have seen in this genre. First of all, Yorgos Lanthimos delivered here a gorgeous movie shot on location with natural lights. Then, the cast was really strong, especially the 3 main actresses (Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone). Finally, it turned out to be such a fascinating tale with many layers and some complex characters. The damned thing sometimes also quite hilarious. Eventually, each time you think you have figured out one of these women, they would come up with something rather unexpected making them even more interesting than they already were. Of course, you might argue that it was much more straightforward than Lanthimos's previous work such as 'Kynodontas' or 'The Lobster' but it was more accessible and, above all, much more entertaining, at least for me. Anyway, to conclude, it completely deserves all the praise it has received, I really loved the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 1 month ago on 20 January 2019 02:15 (A review of Close)

To be honest, I wasn' t really sure what expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Noomi Rapace and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, as usual with Netlix original films, it wasn't really good, I'm afraid, but, at least, it was a disposable thriller. The most interesting thing was the fact that it was written and directed by a woman and that the main characters were all played by some women . But above all, I was once again impressed by Rapace. Indeed, even though the material was rather weak, she gave once again another intense and fierce performance and, of course, by now, you could call it type-casting but she did a fine job and, without her, the whole thing would have been pretty terrible. Indeed, the rest of the cast was rather underwhelming, even Sophie Nélisse was rather weak and it would have been much more entertaining if Rapace had someone stronger to play her 'client'. Anyway, the biggest issue was with the story itself though. Indeed, even though it had some potential, it turned to be just seriously generic and predictable. I mean, it's fine that these women get such an opportunity but if they are going to deliver something as weak as any guy could do than it is just a huge waste. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look though but only for Noomi Rapace.
