An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 29 August 2018 08:34 (A review of Road House)

I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago, I thought I should check it out again. Well, to be honest, I didn’t remember much and I have to admit that it was actually not so bad after all. I mean, I still think that most of the plot was rather idiotic. Indeed, basically, it was some kind of modern Western involving some bouncers which wasn’t really a great mix. However, above all thanks to Patrick Swayze’s charisma, the damned thing was still watchable. There was also another thing that bothered me though. Indeed, one of the main idea was that the main character was some kind of Zen bouncer and that, according to him, violence should be used as a last resort and, in a fight, nobody actually wins and other things like that. And yet, almost all conflicts were resolved with some huge fights with many bystanders loving it. It was een worse with the ending as the main character killed off a whole bunch of henchmen with his bare hands. Of course, I’m well aware that you shouldn’t have such high expectations with a basic action flick like this one but, in my opinion, it made the whole thing looked really stupid. Anyway, to conclude, even though I didn’t like it much, I guess it might be worth a look but only if you really like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 28 August 2018 08:52 (A review of Foxes)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was Adrian Lyne’s directing debut and since I was always had a weak spot for Jodie Foster so, I was quite eager to check it out. To be honest, I was slightly worried with the opening scene which was rather sleazy and misguided. Fortunately, the rest of the movie turned out to be actually pretty good. Indeed, it was actually  quite an interesting and realistic depiction of teenage girls, especially girls from the Valley, and I enjoyed it much more than ‘Valley Girl’ which I just watched a couple of days ago. In fact, I have to admit that the characters in ‘Valley Girl’ might have been actually more reaslitic but they were also so vapid and shallow and, in this movie, these girls were all so much more interesting and entertaining.  On top of that, I did appreciate the fact that these girls were sexually aware, drinking booze and experimenting with drugs. Not that it made them cool but, this way, they became then much more relatable than the perfect girls you usually get in your average Hollywood picture. Concerning the rest of the movie, even though they tried to remain realistic, it was slightly too random for my taste but it wasn’t a big deal. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A milestone

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 27 August 2018 09:18 (A review of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song)

Since I saw again ‘How to Get the Man's Foot Outta Your Ass’ recently, I thought it was really time to see this notorious movie directed by Melvin Van Peebles. Well, basically, it was a similar situation that we had with ‘Ed Wood’ which was a great movie about the making-off of ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’ which was pretty awful. I mean, this movie was not as bad as ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’ was but, to be honest, it wasn’t really good either. Indeed, half of it was about Sweetback running around and the other half was pretty much impossible to follow. Furthermore, it was rather poorly shot with some weak performances. And, yet, while watching this flick, you shouldn’t forget that it was a huge milestone. Indeed, pretty much like ‘Black Panther’ released in 2018 displayed that there could be successful blockbusters with a all black cast and crew, this movie broke many stereotypes concerning the black folks and even launched the Blaxploitation genre. Furthermore, that was also the good thing about watching ‘How to Get the Man's Foot Outta Your Ass’, was that it made clear that making this movie was difficult, mostly on a financial level but not only, and this struggle also deserves some respect. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look.

A bad movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 27 August 2018 07:56 (A review of Left Behind)

Obviously, I wasn’t expecting much from the damned thing but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. I had heard of these hardcore Christian movies but it was the first one I saw (for some reasons, I don't think ‘The Passion of the Christ’ belongs to the genre because of its high production value but I might be mistaken) but I was rather amazed and even appalled by the end-result. Indeed, the whole thing was basically some massive propaganda garbage based on the Rapture and it is rather scary and depressing that some people would actually believe that something like this will happen in the future. I mean, if I did understand correctly, it doesn’t really matter if you are a good or a bad person, it only matters if you put your faith in God and then, and only then, you will be saved and sent to Heaven. But it went further than that, apparently, you have to believe in the ‘right’ God since a Muslim who seemed to be a rather decent man wasn’t spared because of his faith. At least, they had the decency to save all the children regardless of their beliefs. Otherwise, everyone else, the drug addict, the gambler, the capitalist, the adulterer, the investigative journalist, the cute-opinionated-student-with-a-big-mouth, they were all pretty much doomed but, on the other hand, what really happened? Allright, millions of people just disappeared  suddenly but would such an event suddenly bring the collapse of the World? I doubt that. I mean, with a massive natural disaster, a nuclear world war, an alien invasion or a zombie outbreak, I could understand why but I thought it was rather far-fetched that it would happen so fast in such circumstances. And, of course, the whole thing looked terrible, especially the cheap CGI, the performances were so weak and the dialogues were borderline laughable. To conlude, the damned thing was pretty bad and you should probably avoid it.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 26 August 2018 08:14 (A review of Valley Girl)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Nicolas Cage, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, it was Cage's 2nd movie and his very first leading part. Well, to be honest, I actually ended up with some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, first of all, the plot was rather thin and it was involving such vapid and shallow characters. But, then, on the other hand, I have to admit that the characters were actually quite realistic and the whole thing did feel genuine. I also enjoyed the fact that Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman both looked like some average teenagers or young adults and not some like top-models. Still, I thought it was so annoying that Julie dropped Randy just because of peer pressure, especially to go back with a major douchebag but, on the other hand, if I would be honest with myself, it might be how it goes in real life. Anyway, eventually, they still ended up together after all with a rather lame happy-ending. To conclude, even if it was nothing really amazing, I guess it might still be worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 25 August 2018 08:26 (A review of Atomic Blonde)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Charlize Theron, I was still quite eager to check it out. Well, first of all, even though the title was pretty cool, I thought it was actually rather misleading. Indeed, with such a title and with the fact that it was directed by the same guy behind 'John Wick', I was expecting a B feature with a lot of violent scenes. However, it turned to be something actually fairly sophisticated, at least, much more than 'John Wick'. Basically, it was indeed a badass action flick but also a Cold War spy thriller and this mix turned to be seriously entertaining. Still, to be honest, even though the plot was sometimes rather murky (which is typical of the genre), it was basically a very typical  and rather generic spy story. Same thing about the characters, even though Charlize Theron and James McAvoy did deliver some solid performances, their respective characters turned out to be fun but they were never really fascinating. In spite all this, the whole thing looked fine, the action scenes were top-notch and I loved how they played around the fact that it was taking place at the time that the Berlin Wall was going to fall. To conclude, it turned out to be a very well made and fairly original action flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 24 August 2018 07:07 (A review of Flavors of Youth)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I thought it was directed by Makoto Shinkai who made the massively successful 'Your Name.' but it was in fact directed by 3 other guys. Anyway, it wasn't a big deal as it turned out to be a fine watch after all. Indeed, it was so refreshing to see a traditionally hand-drawn animated feature and I really enjoyed these three little romantic tales. The first story was about some noodles and it reminded me of 'Tampopo' with its delicious food and I really enjoyed the nostalgic and melancholic tone. The second short story involving 2 sisters was probably the least successful one maybe because I have a hard time believing that the life of a top model could be so difficult. Furthermore, the link with the main theme was rather thin in my opinion. Eventually, the last short-story was maybe the best one as it was just so romantic but also really realistic and I could really relate with the main character. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was still a fine anthology and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 24 August 2018 08:11 (A review of The Meg)

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick, especially after I watched the trailer which made the whole thing looked really lame. However, Nick, my step-son, was really eager to check it out so  I still saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Well, eventually, I have to admit that it was not so bad at all after all. I mean, sure, it was still nothing groundbreaking but, for a shark movie, it turned out to be actually fairly entertaining. Indeed, I was slightly worried about the jokes but even though those were barely funny, they didn’t turn out to be too annoying. Same thing with the romantic link between Jason Statham and Bingbing Li, it was pretty pathetic and they had no chemistry whatsoever but it wasn’t really a big deal either. But, obviously, this movie was mostly about a big fat shark and this beast was quite impressive. Concerning the complaints of Jason Statham that the movie didn’t turn out to be as gore as he had expected, it really didn’t bother me either. Indeed, the action scenes were pretty badass and I don’t think that tons of blood or seeing some shredded limbs in closed-up would have be such an improvement. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, it turned out to be a decent watch after all and I think it might be worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 23 August 2018 08:19 (A review of Ghost in the Shell)

I already saw this movie but since I just bought an awesome brand new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though this movie was a critical and commercial flop when it was released, to be honest, I don’t think it was so bad after all. Indeed, the whole thing looked amazing, the action scenes were badass and they managed to nail the mood of the original Japanese animated feature. However, even if the story was decent enough, unfortunately, they did make some mistakes though. Of course, there was the whole controversy about casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead role and I think she was indeed miscast but not because she is not Asian. I mean, since Johansson is one of the only bankable actresses in the world, it completey made sense that the producers chose her so the whole white-washing controversy was rather ridiculous and even Mamoru Oshii, the director of 'Kokaku Kidotai', gave his blessing. What bother me with her was the fact she was just too small to play the Major (1,60 meters), she wasn’t physically threatening enough and I never had the feeling that she was actually a lethal killing machine. Furthermore, even though she is usually a decent actress, I thought she gave a rather weak performance which was rather surprising since she complained nailed it a couple of years ago with a similar character in ‘Under the Skin’. On the other hand, she wasn’t helped by the fact that they pretty much ruined her character. Indeed, one of the major trademarks of ‘Ghost in Shell’ is the fact that the Major is a cold, mysterious and ambiguous character. The fact that she might be struggling with her identity was always only implied and never really stated but, in this US version, it became a major focus which completely changed this character and, in the process, she became just too weak and emotional. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think that it could have been so much worse and I believe it is actually worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 22 August 2018 08:20 (A review of Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke)

Since this movie has a really solid reputation (it is even included in '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list), I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. Well, eventually, it turned out to be a decent stoner comedy but definitely not the best I have seen and, in this genre, I actually  enjoyed much more 'Friday' and 'Pineapple Express'. I mean, I didn't mind the randomness, it obviously goes with the territory, the main issue was above all the fact that the jokes were just so hit-and-miss. However, I have to admit that some of the scenes were indeed quite hilarious but, to be honest, many jokes were actually barely amusing. Furthermore, the whole concept of the truck made of weed was a rather weak idea and I think it would have been more fun to have these two stoners endlessly looking for some weed and getting in trouble in the process. On top of that, I had a rather hard time to care about these 2 guys. Indeed, Cheech and Chong were not bad but not really amazing and the supporting characters were even less entertaining. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn't live up to my expectations, it was still a decent comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
