(A review of
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back)
To be honest, I was rather surprised that they would come up with a sequel for āJack Reacherā. I mean, sure, it was actually a decent action flick but it was still nothing groundbreaking and, above all, it didnāt turn out to be a huge success at theĀ box-office. However, it seems that Tom Cruise didnāt accept this semi-failure and he still pushed to make this sequel. Well, to be honest, even though it was watchable, it wasnāt really good, Iām afraid. I mean, the intro was not bad and the story was entertaining enough until Reacher managed to get Turner out of jail but, from the moment they started to work together, the whole thing became terribly generic and bairly entertaining. Another thing that bothered me was that, even though they keep hammering the fact that Jack Reacher always works alone, in both movies in this franchise, he ends up with a hot female partner. It was also a huge mistake to give Jack Reacher a daughter and it didnāt help that this character was just poorly written and poorly played by Danika Yarosh. Eventually, the only thing that saved this movie from becoming really average was Tom Cruiseās charisma and the fact that Jack Reacher remains a pretty cool character. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was rather generous with my rating here but I guess it might still be worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
A Wrinkle in Time)
Even though this movie turned out to be a massive critical and commercial flop, I was still curious to see if it was really so bad. Well, I have to agree that the damned thing was indeed pretty weak. Basically, it was supposed to be some kind of cute, whimsical and perhaps even inspiring tale but it just never worked. Indeed, it turned out to beĀ a mix of really random and weird scenes. To make things worse, most of the dialogues was filled with some incomprehensible mambo-jambo involving some Camazotz, some tesseract and three mysterious misses who really came from nowhere. Seriously, after 15 minutes, I pretty much gave up trying to understand what the hell was going on and I hope the book made more sense. At least, I hoped it would be visually appealing and the first scenes were promising but, even in this area, it was still a failure and it has been a while since I have seen such an underwhelming overdose of CGI. At least, Storm Reid had some charisma and displayed some potential in spite of this poor material. But, above all, I felt bad for Ava DuVernay. Indeed, it was such a historical event that a black woman had the opportunity to direct such a big budget feature but she completely failed and I really hope she will get another chance in the future since she is so talented. Anyway, to conclude, I was just bored by the damned thing and I don't think it is really worth a look.

(A review of
BlacKkKlansman)
I have always been a big fan of Spike Lee but, to honest, it had been years since the guy made something really amazing. Fortunately, he made an impressive comeback with this movie. Indeed, it worked on so many levels. It was a fun and entertaining police thriller, a sometimes hilarious satire and it also had a powerful message and it is so rare to find a movie managing to mix so many tones and doing it so well. The main character, very well played by John David Washington (yes, the son of Denzel Washington),Ā was also complex and interesting showing some genuine internal conflict between his loyalty to his black folks but also towards his colleagues and his work as a cop. Eventually, in my opinion, the main core was to show that racism in general and the Ku Klux Klan in particular are basically based on ignorance because, at the end of day, it is ridiculous to argue that the color of your skin should make you a better or a worse person. There was one scene that did bother me though and it was when they played a trick to arrest one of the racist cops. It came out of nowhere, it felt rather fake and it could have been easily removed since it didn't have any impact on the main story but, fortunately, it wasn't a big deal. Anyway, to conclude, it was a really entertaining and powerful movie and it is definitely worth a look.

(A review of
Force Majeure)
I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I kept hearing some pretty good things about it, I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, it was some kind of character study, showing how a couple might evolve after a near tragedy. And I guess, that's what we do, the spoiled privileged Western people, we tend to over think and over analyse everything since we didn't have to face a war on our soil for already 70 years, we didn't have to face hunger or some other massive dramatic situation. As a result, we play such scenarios like 'what would you do if you were drowning? Would you save yourself of your children?' But even though the avalanche was really scary, it was eventually rather harmless and nobody got hurt so you might wonder why the characters wouldn't just laugh about it and move on with their life. Furthermore, another tricky thing was that you never get to see this family before, in their every day life, which make it rather difficult to judge them. It was also rather odd that the mother would discuss this matter with some total strangers who couldn't possible take a position since they didn't know her and her husband. Also, I wasn't so sure about the ending scene. Obviously, it was to reverse the roles as the mother was leaving the bus on her own but her family came with her so I don't think it really worked. Anyway, it was still an interesting film which developed some nice ideas and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like theĀ genre.

(A review of
Transformers: The Last Knight)
I already saw this movie but, for some reason, I thought it would be a great idea to rewatch the whole transformers franchise. Anyway, even though I have to admit that I actually enjoy the first installment, all the sequels turned out to be disappointing so I wasnāt expecting much from this last instalment, especially since it was the lowest grossing film of this franchise (it still made $600 million worldwide though). Well, the whole thing turned out to be indeed pretty weak and it was easily the weakest instalment in this already seriously underwhelming franchise. In fact, I have to admit that there was some potential about showing that the Transformers have always been there in fact in the past but this idea was just so poorly developed. Basically, the whole thing was some kind of mix of āPrometheusā with āArmageddonā but it never worked. Seriously, it was just another overlong mess and it was in fact so convoluted that at times it barely made sense. Honestly, there was so much going on and, even though I saw it only yesterday, Iām afraid I forgot already half of it. Ā Eventually, the whole thing was just so idiotic but also sometimes rather pretentious. Anyway, the main issue was that it was again so boring and even the special effects which used to be quite amazing 10 years ago with the first instalment didnāt really impress me anymore. At least, it seems that it will be Michael Bayās last transformer film as a director so maybe someone else could resurrect this franchise but the damage done by Bay has been huge, Iām afraid. Anyway, to conclude, this movie is basically the poster child of major franchise saturation and I donāt think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.

(A review of
Above the Law)
To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of Steven Seagal but I was still intrigued by this movie since it was Seagalās acting debut and since it was directed by Andrew Davis who had delivered some solid action flicks during his career. Well, it turned out to be seriously weak after all, in fact, even though it was barely 21:00 when I watched the damned thing, I still struggled to not fall asleep. Back then, following the release of this movie, Seagal was hailed as the next big action movie star but, to be honest, the guy was and still is such a weak actor. At least, he was a real Aikido master so the fight scenes were pretty good and Pam Grier was actually not bad at all as she was a different and interesting partner but that was pretty much the only positive things I could find regarding this movie. I mean, seriously, the story was a mess. Indeed, they tell you that the guy has learned martial arts in Japan, fought in the Vietnam war as a CIA agent and then became a cop in Chicago and that was only during the first 10 mins. Eventually, thatās probably what bother me the most with this actor, in this movie but also in general, was the fact that he is so pretentious. On a side note, Sharon Stone who was at the time one of the sexiest actress in the world played here probably her most boring character. Anyway, to conclude, I really didnāt like the damned thing, I think I was actually rather generous with my rating here and I donāt think it is really worth a look.Ā

(A review of
Laggies)
I already saw this movie but, for some reason, I thought I might as well check it out again. I have to admit that, the first time around, I wasnāt really sure what to expect from this flick and I was mostly interested by the nice cast involved. Well, the cast was indeed pretty good (Keira Knightley, ChloĆ« Grace Moretz, Sam Rockwell) and they all played some interesting and rather complex characters. Furthermore, it was dealing with something interesting, with the fact that even if you make some amazing friends during your teenage years, there is no guarantee that, 10 years later, you will still feel the same regarding these friends. So, the concept was interesting but, unfortunately, it was just rather poorly developed and, eventually, the story turned out be rather weird and even borderline idiotic. Indeed, when the main character started to struggle with her feeling towards her group of friends and even towards her boyfriend, what did she do? Well, she just disappeared and started to hang out with a group of teenagersā¦. Seriously, how was that supposed to be an improvement? How was it supposed to help her out in any way? However, it didnāt stop there and the whole thing became even more moronic when Megan decided to sleep over a whole week at this teenagerās house. The problem wasnāt that it was inappropriate, the problem was that it was just so weird as pointed out by Sam Rockwellās character. And, of course, the fact that Megan fell in love with the father of her new friend didnāt help either. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I actually liked these characters, the concept actually had some potential and I think it is worth a look but there is no denying that the whole thing felt like a missed opportunity.

(A review of
Kill Your Darlings)
Since I have always been interested in Ā the writers of the Beat Generation, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, when watching this kind of movies dealing with the life of famous writers, I do fell slightly guilty. Indeed, instead of watching such movies, shouldnāt I be reading the books written by these great artists? At least, I have read a couple of books written by Jack Kerouack but I still havenāt read anything from Allen Ginsberg and, more important, still nothing from William S. Burroughs. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it turned out to be a decent watch even if it wasnāt maybe nothing really groundbreaking. Indeed, the beginning was rather weak as it is always a rather weak gimmick to start with a murder which will occur at the end. Then, they tried to introduce Allen Ginsbergās home situation but this bit was just too short and it should have been either developed or removed completely. Ā Still, the makers chose an interesting part of their history as this murder had a huge impact on all these writers. Furthermore, the cast was really solid (Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall, Ben Foster, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Elizabeth Olsen, Kyra Sedgwick) . To conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was not bad at all and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in the Beat generation.Ā

(A review of
European Vacation)
To be honest, since I had been hardly impressed by 'Vacation', I wasn't really expecting much from this sequel but since it was directed by Amy Heckerling, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be seriously weak, I'm afraid. Indeed, even though it made sense that the Griswolds would go to Europe with this sequel, the whole thing turned out to be the usual awful comedy about US tourists visiting various European countries. Seriously, while watching this movie, you might wonder who is actually more stupid: the people loving this garbage or the people who made this garbage. I mean, the first scene involved a TV-show host kissing and touching a teenage girl which was just so cringe-inducing. The rest was not much better, I'm afraid, as it was just a succession of awful boring and sometimes bordeline offensive jokes about people living in Europe. At least, Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo had once again a pretty good chemistry but that's probably the only positive thing I could find about this movie. At least, if they would have kept the same actors to play their kids, it could have been nice to see them grow up through the different sequels but they were unfortunately recast. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was actually rather generous with my rating here, the damned thing was just seriously weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.

(A review of
Observe and Report)
I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Seth Rogen, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, to be honest, to make a comedy about a shopping mall security guard was a rather weak idea even if I didn't think that this movie was as bad as many seem to think. Indeed, I usually don't like comedies making fun of some terribly stupid characters (for example, I do think that 'Dumb and Dumber' is easily one of the most overrated movies ever made) but this one turned out to be actually watchable. Of course, some of the jokes were just rather cringe-inducing but some of them were actually quite funny. For example, pretty much all the scene involving Ronnie's mother were just spot-on. Furthermore, it was a great move to have Ray Liotta who played it straight as his usual seasoned no-nonsense cop. Eventually, even though Ronnie was vastly incompetent and should have been fired a long time ago, he wasn't necessarily a bad person after all but was he actually really entertaining? I'm not so sure but, at least, with his bipolar disorder, he was more interesting than the character played by Anna Faris who always seems to be stuck playing some dumb blonde. Anyway, to conclude, I'm not sure if I should recommend this movie but I don't think it was so bad and you might check it out, at least, if you like the genre.
