(A review of
Think Like a Man)
To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for romantic-comedies, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be based on a real self-help book which must be one of the most misguided gimmicks in the romantic-comedy genre. However, even if this movie should have been a complete failure, I have to admit that it was actually quite watchable and it mostly had to do with the characters and the cast involved (Kevin Hart, Meagan Good, Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union, Regina Hall). Indeed, I actually liked these characters who were fairly realistic and, basically, this stupid book was just a lame excuse to create some bogus conflicts between them. Eventually, if they would have removed this book, it would have been actually a much more entertaining movie dealing with 4 couples all starting up their relationships. Concerning Kevin Hart, I have noticed that I’m not really familiar with his work but, even though the guy was pretty funny, it’s too bad that this character wasn’t developed at all and the only thing he did was pretty much to deliver some oneliners from time to time. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look but only if you really like the genre.

(A review of
The Accountant )
To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was apparently well received, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, since my step-son is autist, I think I have a rather decent knowledge about this topic and it was interesting to see they how they would handle such a character. Well, unfortunately, as usual, they gave us an autist who was some kind of genius with numbers which must be of the most stereotypical trademarks regarding autism. However, they went so much further than that and turned this guy into some kind of lethal killing machine and, even though it might sound completely misguided, I have to admit that I was actually quite intrigued by this autist version of Jason Bourne. Concerning the story itself, it was pretty much the same thing. Indeed, even though it was just serioulsy convoluted (I’m not sure if half of it really did make much sense), it was still actually quite entertaining. Concerning the cast (Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal), they all did a really fine job and, even if Ben Affleck didn’t completely nail it (for example, the way he blew in his hands felt off for me) , he was still pretty good and it’s rather funny to think that the guy was considered as the worst actor in the world less than 20 years ago. I was also quite impressed by Jon Bernthal who completely changed his character during the last 15 minutes and still remained completely convincing. Anyway, to conclude, even though this movie was sometimes really bonkers, I have to admit that I actually enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look.

(A review of
Kingsman: The Golden Circle)
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this sequel but since I have seen all the other movies directed by Matthew Vaughn and since there was a nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, even though I have to admit that I did like 'Kingsman: The Secret Service', I never thought it was really so amazing and I wasn't surprised that this sequel was rather poorly received. Well, eventually, I really struggled to get into this movie. In my opinion, the main issue was that the damned thing was just too long. In fact, while watching this flick, I was thinking about an article I read on the internet claiming that movies, especially action movies, have been become way too long nowadays. Well, even though I didn't completely agree with this assessment, it definitely applied for this movie though. I mean, the plot was pretty generic, which actually made sense since it was pretty much parodying the James Bond franchise, but there is no way that it required almost 140 mins of running time. In fact, the original cut was apparently a whopping 220 minutes long which would have been just ridiculous and so boring to watch. As a result, there were just too many characters involved and, in spite of the overlong running time, many of them were actually wasted and showed up only in a couple of scenes (Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry). Furthermore, Eggsy had just way too many partners when it would have worked much better if he would have been on his own or maybe only with Harry, his mentor who was struggling to find back his game. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, at least, the action scenes did work and it was still watchable but, to be honest, by now, I'm pretty much done with this franchise.

(A review of
Black Knight)
I didn't expect much from this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching the damned thing. Well, obviously, the whole thing seemed to be indeed really stupid but, to be honest, I have to admit that I was actually positively surprised, at least, during the 30 minutes. Indeed, the whole situation was completely ridiculous but Martin Lawrence actually embraced it and it was actually quite entertaining for a moment. The fact that I had such low expectations probably helped though. Unfortunately, it didn't last, I'm afraid, and I think it started to go in the wrong direction from the moment the main character suggested to open a fast-food chain in this medieval world. I mean, not only it wasn't funny at all but, even worse, these medieval characters were actually pretty excited about this idea and it basically set the tone for the rest of the movie and, afterwards, the whole became really lame, I'm afraid. Indeed, basically, from this point on, the main character would keep coming up with some modern ideas, all rather ridiculous, and, each time, they were welcome with some cheers by the locals turning them into some massive morons. Anyway, the whole thing was just terribly misguided, most of it just didn't work at all, and you should pretty much avoid this movie.

(A review of
W.E.)
For many years, Madonna had a rather pathetic acting career, her last lead role was almost 20 years ago in the godawful ‘Swept Away’ and it seems that she has pretty much retired. However, since then, she did shoot 2 movies very discretly so I was actually a little bit curious to see her directing skills (or lack of it). Well, eventually, even if the damned thing was rather misguided, at least, it was quite ambitious and I don’t think it was really so bad at all. Indeed, there was definitely some potential in focusing on the relationship between Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII. However, it was a huge gamble to try to transform the biggest scandal of the 20th century into, supposedly, one of the greatest love stories and, to be honest, it was never really convincing. Indeed, Madonna spent too much time and effort to make sure that everything looked fine (it did) but not enough on the characters. Also, for some reason, it was combined with a fictional character who was obsessing with this couple but the link between these 2 stories was just too thin and even though Abbie Cornish was as usual extremely lovely, her romantic life was just too generic, predictable and rather boring. In fact, even her romance with Oscar Isaac didn’t really work because, in my opinion, the guy pretty much acted like a creepy stalker. Anyway, eventually, the biggest mistake made by Madonna was to assume that the viewers would automatically share her fascination with this notorious couple but, in spite of its flaws, I still think this movie is worth a look.

(A review of
The Land Girls)
Even though this movie seemed to be a rather obscure, since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, even though the material was actually quite interesting, I was actually surprised by how [Link removed - login to see][Link removed - login to see]rivolous the damned thing turned out to be. Indeed, at least 90% of the movie was dealing with the romantic life of these 3 girls, especially with Joe, a local farm boy. The worst thing was that even the romantic elements were actually poorly developed in this movie. I mean, that Prue would want to have some quick sex with Joe and that Ag would like to experiment sex with him, why not? But by having also Stella completely fall in love with him was really pushing it too far. I mean, if the guy would have been incredibly handsome and/or charismatic, I could have been more believable but he seemed rather unremarkable to me. Eventually, their obsession with Joe was apparently not enough and two of them also managed to find the man of their life the very first time they went out to a dancehall. Seriously, this movie eventually pretty much reduced the whole WWII to a series of romantic encounters which was rather pathetic. It was too bad because the damned thing had some potential and these 3 talented actresses (Catherine McCormack, Rachel Weisz, Anna Friel) actually deserverd a better story. Anyway, to conclude, I think my rating was rather generous here but the whole thing was rather harmless and I guess it might be worth a look but only if you really like the genre though.

(A review of
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs)
Since I have always been a huge fan of the Coen brothers, of course, I was really eager to check this flick. Well, even if it won't go down as one of their best movies, I thought it was fairly enjoyable and, at least, it was a slight improvement on 'Hail, Caesar!' which was, in my opinion, one of their weakest movies so far. First of all, even though some hard-core movie fans might prefer the good old celluloid, the digital photography displayed in this movie was beautiful and, in my opinion, it was the most gorgeous movie delivered by the Coen brothers so far. Concerning the little stories they gave us, to be honest, even though they were not bad, none of them really impressed me. The first one dealing with Buster Scruggs himself was by far the best one but all the others were going from just decent to actually rather weak. Eventually, the whole thing gave the feeling that the brothers couldn't come up with one really good story so they compiled a bunch of rather half-baked tales together. The best example would be the segment 'Meal Ticket'. I mean, it wasn't really bad but the outcome was rather predictable and it didn't seem to be a really smart choice to have half of the running time with Harrison repeating again and again his text. Eventually, it's a good example showing that most of these tales were never really about the plot but about mixing the Western genre with the typical Coen mood and quirkyness. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in the Coen brothers's work.

(A review of
The Great Wall)
To be honest, I wasn't really expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Matt Damon, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be indeed pretty weak, I'm afraid. Basically, the whole thing was a rather pathetic attempt to deliver a movie that could be a major blockbuster in China but also in the rest of the world. Eventually, nobody cared much for the damned thing. I mean, it was a pretty cool idea to have Zhang Yimou, one of the most famous Chinese directors, working on a huge epic with Matt Damon, after all, the guy had made 'Hero' and 'House of Flying Daggers' which were pretty awesome. However, the fact that the damned thing had been written by 6 American guys was not really a good omen though. And, indeed, the writting was probably the weakest point in this flick. As long as they focused on the Chinese characters, it was nothing really amazing but, at least, it was watchable and the costumes and set design were also pretty awesome. However, each time they focused on Matt Damon's character, it never really worked. Indeed, as usual with Yimou, the Chinese characters didn't elaborate much about themselves or anything in general which made them intriguing but, every 30 secondes, you would have either Matt Damon or Pedro Pascal giving their analysis as if they were commenting a football game which was just so annoying. The fact that Damon gave here one of his weakest performances didn't help either. Seriously, if they would have made this movie without the Western characters, the whole thing would have been vastly improved. Anyway, I guess my rating might be rather generous here, somehow, I still think the damned thing had some potential but there is no doubt that it was a failure.

(A review of
Murder on the Orient Express)
I already saw this movie but, with my wife, we just saw ‘Death on the Nile’ a couple of weeks ago and, since she has a weak spot for the genre, I thought I might as well rewatch this movie with her. Well, I have to admit that I enjoyed this movie more the 2nd time around. Indeed, I didn’t remember that it was visually so neat and I was much more able to enjoy the mood. Unfortunately, I’m still not a huge fan of this story though. Indeed, in my opinion, there are just too many characters involved and I always thought that the twist ending was actually rather disappointing. Well, with this new version, even though it was not bad at all, Branagh didn’t really manage to make it really spellbinding to me, I’m afraid. At least, there was once again a stellar cast involved (Kenneth Branagh, Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Penélope Cruz, Derek Jacobi, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Olivia Colman, Willem Dafoe). Unfortunately, I still think that there are too many characters and, as a result, none of them was really developed. Furthermore, since there were so many characters, it seems that Poirot had to make his deductions out of thin air just because there was simply not enough time. To make things worse, Branagh didn’t really nail Hercule Poirot in my opinion. Indeed, the tricky thing with this character is that he has to be funny but not completely ridiculous but, in this case, even if he wasn’t as pathetic as inspecteur Clouzot, it wasn’t far from it, to be honest. Anyway, to conclude, I’m actually rather surprised that this movie did so well at the box-office but I have to admit that it did grow on me, even if it still felt like a rather useless remake.

(A review of
Aquaman)
With DC, with their next movie, you are never sure if they will have another flop but it seems that, this time around, they delivered a box-office hit so there is maybe still some hope for the DCCEU. Indeed, James Wan came up here with a really solid super-hero flick. First of all, the damned thing was just so gorgeous, easily the most beautiful movie delivered by DC so far and even one of the most beautiful super-hero movies I have seen. On top of that, it is one of the very few movies for which the usual dreadful 3D actually had some added value. Concerning Arthur Curry/Aquaman, I thought he was a pretty cool character and, even if Jason Momoa might not be the best actor in the world, his performance was decent enough. Eventually, the only issue with this flick was probably with its story. I mean, it's not that it was very bad, it's just that it was very basic and therefore rather generic and completely predictable. On top of that, while 'Justice League' might have been too short, this movie was slightly too long. I mean, after 2 hours of 3D CGI, even if it was gorgeous, it started to become rather overwhelming and I was waiting for them to finally wrap it up. To be honest, when Marvel started their MCU, except for 'Iron Man', none of their first features were really mind-blowing ('The Incredible Hulk', 'Captain America: The First Avenger', 'Thor'), so it is rather unfair to expect from DC to change the whole game right from the start. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was still quite entertaining and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
