(A review of
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part)
Since I really enjoyed 'The Lego Movie', I thought I might as well check out this sequel. Well, to be honest, it took me a very long time this time around to get into the damned thing. Indeed, during the first half, the very same concept that I enjoyed some much the first time around started here to get on my nerves. Sure, when it was new and original, it was really fun but it seemed now so random and even slightly obnoxious. Fortunately, at last during the final act, the whole thing started to make more sense and it became finally entertaining. It seemed that they lifted a lot of their ideas from the 'Toy Story' franchise but they could have used some worst inspiration. Anyway, I really liked how they managed to bring the little sister into the mix and the typical brother-sister rivalry was very well handled. Still, it took them such a long time to finally get there and everything else happening before was only barely entertaining. Eventually, I wonder how they will manage to bring something new and interesting after that. Anyway, to conclude, even though I think they have pretty much exhausted the potential of this franchise, it was still a decent sequel and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Â

(A review of
Ready Player One)
I already saw this movie but since I have it on Blu-ray and since I just brought a brand new awesome TV, I was quite eager to check it out again. First of all, even though I have never been a huge fan of Steven Spielberg, his movies are always a big event so I was quite intrigued by this movie, especially since it turned out to be quite successful at the box-office. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that I was actually quite positively surprised and, as far as Iâm concerned, it was Spielbergâs most enjoyable movie in years. Indeed, the damned thing was visually really impressive and I wish I actually saw it in the movie theater when it was released. I was also surprised that most of the movie was actually CGI animated but, in this genre, it is easily one of the most satisfying movies I have seen so far. Furthermore, the story was quite entertaining and, while watching the damned thing, I was thinking that âValerian and the City of a Thousand Planetsâ could have been also a box-office hit if Luc Besson didnât write such a half-baked plot. On the downside, itâs too bad the whole thing was too long though. I mean, with 140 mins, it wasnât exactly a very long movie but they could or should have removed 30 mins and the whole thing above all lost some steam during the 3rd act. Furthermore, even though the potential was pretty much limitless with this concept, they didnât take much risks after all and, like pretty much everything else directed by Spielberg, it was too light-hearted and sentimental for my taste. Still, there were some really cool scenes and the whole 'Shining' sequence should go down as one of the best things ever delivered by this director. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was maybe not a masterpiece, it was still a really fun and gorgeous blockbuster and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Steven Spielbergâs work.Â

(A review of
Velvet Buzzsaw)
Since I really loved âNightcrawlerâ, I was really eager to see this new directing effort from Dan Gilroy once again starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo and the fact that it was directly available on Netflix was another reason to watch it straight away. Well, it turned to be something really ambitious, some rather weird mix of a satiric look on the Art business world with a surreal horror flick. Still, even though it was definitely some bold combination, I wasnât completely blown away though. Indeed, I really liked to dive into this Art world which was quite fascinating and obnoxious at the same time thanks to a very strong cast but the horror stuff was never really interesting though. Basically, at best, it did feel like a âTwilight Zoneâ episode but, at the end of the day, it was not so original after all and it was more like an average slasher flick. On top of that, it was also a distraction. Indeed, just when I was starting to learn more about the characters and their relationship with one and another, this interesting process was unfortunately abruptly interrupted by these random killings. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still enjoyed the damned thing, it was especially really neat to see Jake Gyllenhaal nailing another performance and I think it is worth a look.Â

(A review of
Stretch)
I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Joe Carnahanâs work, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I have to admit that, at least, Carnahan tried to do something completely different than his previous movies. Still, to be honest, I wasnât completely convinced though. I mean, the damned thing really had some potential but, in my opinion, Carnahan never really managed to keep the tone right. Indeed, basically, half of it was rather straightforward and the other half was just seriously wacky and I think it would have worked better if he had made some choice to make something completely surreal but I guess that it was too big a stretch for him (I know, that was a lazy punâŠ). I had about the same feeling concerning Patrick Wilson. I mean, it was pretty neat that he tried to shake his rather clean-cut image and he was not bad at all but the guy is no Michael Fassbender or Tom Hardy. At least, he was miles better than Jessica Alba who was rather pathetic playing some kind of nerd. Concerning Chris Pine, I donât know, his character was wild but probably too much over the top for my taste. Anyway, to conclude, even if the whole thing didnât completely work for me, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Joe Carnahanâs work.

(A review of
Kabul, City in the Wind)
For once, we went to see a documentary with my film club which is always a bold choice in my opinion. First of all, I thought it was terribly refreshing to see the Afghani people as some regular folks instead as the usual blood-thirsty religious fanatics. Of course, it might seem common sense but, on the other hand, we have been pretty much brainwashed for decades by the news outlet and, as a result, we automatically associates this country with warfare and extremism. And yet, it does feel like a wasted land and, if we also fear for a terrorist act that might actually never happen, it is something they have to face at least on a weekly basis and everyone in this country has lost someone during such attacks. To be honest, I'm not sure if it was a great idea to split the movie into 2 and I think they should have focused either on this bus driver or on these two young boys (personally, I would have put my money on the bus driver who was complexer). Futhermore, the gimmick to have the characters telling their dreams was used too often and it felt like a failed attempt to add some lyricism. Anyway, even if it was maybe nothing really groundbreaking, it was still a really interesting documentary and it is definitely worth a look.

(A review of
Mechanic: Resurrection)
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jason Statham and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, even though 'The Mechanic' was watchable, it was rather surprising that they would make a sequel for this movie and, after watching the end-result, this choice was even more bewildering. Sure, it was maybe not the worst Statham vehicle I have seen so far but it was still rather weak though. At least, the action took place in many exotic locations (Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Australia) but that was pretty much the only thing interesting about this movie. I have to amit that some of the action scenes were pretty neat but most of them were just some endless shootings which bored me rather fast. Concerning Jessica Alba, sure, she is still look stunning but it is rather sad that, 10 years after 'Into the Blue', she is still stuck playing some gratuitous underwater swimming scenes in her bikini. Eventually, the thing that bothered me the most with this flick was that the story was just some non-stop nonsense. Anyway, to conclude, the damned thing turned out to be even weaker than I expected and I don't think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a diehard fan of the genre.Â

(A review of
Widows)
Since I'm a big fan of Steve McQueen, of course, I was quite eager to check his last directing effort, especially since the reviews were once again really positive. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that it was actually slightly disappointing. I mean, sure, McQueen has delivered here a solid and original heist movie but it wasn't really much more than that and even if it was not bad at all, it was still his least interesting movie so far. On the positive side, he had a really strong cast at his disposal and all the actors involved have delivered some strong performances, especially Viola Davis who remains one of the best actresses at work nowadays. Eventually, what I was missing or what I was hoping for, was that McQueen would try somehow to subvert the genre but even though there was a nice grittiness, it still felt safe and it was just too faithful to the genre to become anything really amazing so it felt like like a missed opportunity. At least, it was miles better than 'Ocean's Eight' but that wasn't really a difficult goal to achieve. Anyway, to conclude, even though this movie didn't really fulfil my expectations, it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Steve McQueen's work.

(A review of
Not Safe for Work)
To be honest, even though this flick didn't seem to be amazing, since it was directed by Joe Johnston, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, it is rather surprising that Johnston would go from directing a big Marvel blockbuster to helm such cheap direct-to-DVD thriller. Well, even though I already had some low expectations, I still managed to be even weaker than I expected. Basically, it was just another cheap thriller and I was amazed by how little was actually going on through the whole thing. I mean, even if the running time was not even 80 mins, there were still some long stretches during which nothing much really happened at all. Then, the cast was just rather underwhelming. I mean, I have nothing against Max Minghella but the guy is just no leading material. Eventually, the only one who managed to do something slightly interesting with his character was JJ Feild but even he looked him a cheap Tom Hiddleston clone. Coming back to the story, seriously, the whole thing was just so lazy. I mean, not only it was just really generic and predictable, lot of it didn't make much sense. For example, why would the main character try to investigate what's going on just after he got fired? Then, why did it take him so long to call the cops? Even some small details were poorly handled like the fact that if a phone is turned off, you will always have to first enter the pincode before receiving a call. Anyway, at least, it was a short movie but there is no doubt that the whole thing was not really worth a look at all.

(A review of
The Past)
Since I really loved âA Separationâ, I was really eager to see Asghar Farhadiâs following directing effort, especially since it was well received. Well, even though there was some really good things in this movie, to be honest, it never really blew me away though. I mean, Farhadi displayed some really solid directing, I just love his realistic approach, and he managed once again to get some really strong performances from all the characters, even from the kids. However, even if the characters were quite interesting, to be honest, they were not exactly spellbinging. Furthemore, the fact that it was sometimes rather difficult to root for them didnât help either. For example, BĂ©rĂ©nice Bejo was quite amazing but you could feel that her character always had a rather destructive behaviour not only with Ahmad and Samir but with probably all her previous partners as well, she was also smoking while she was pregnant and she lashed out again her kids many times when she couldn't handle the pressure anymore. And yet, the fact that these characters were all flawed and humane made them still quite interesting to behold. Anyway, to conclude, even if the whole thing didnât completely grab me, it was still a strong drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Asghar Farhadiâs work.Â

(A review of
The Lavender Hill Mob)
I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was included in the â1001 Movies You Must See Before You Dieâ list, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be a decent comedy but, to be honest, not much more than that in my opinion. First of all, I saw the damned thing on the BBC without subtitles so I have to admit that I didnât get all the jokes so maybe if I rewatch it with some subtitles, I might be able to enjoy it more. Still, it was a fun flick with another strong performance by Alec Guinness. Furthermore, I always had a weak spot for the heist genre, especially when the heist is actually quite realistic like it was in this case, at least, until the 3rd act. Indeed, at some point, the characters started to chase these little girls with their golden Eiffel towers and, in my opinion, even if it was maybe entertaining, the whole thing didnât make much sense after that. Anyway, to conclude, even if I wasnât completely blown away by the whole thing, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
