A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 25 August 2018 08:26 (A review of Atomic Blonde)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Charlize Theron, I was still quite eager to check it out. Well, first of all, even though the title was pretty cool, I thought it was actually rather misleading. Indeed, with such a title and with the fact that it was directed by the same guy behind 'John Wick', I was expecting a B feature with a lot of violent scenes. However, it turned to be something actually fairly sophisticated, at least, much more than 'John Wick'. Basically, it was indeed a badass action flick but also a Cold War spy thriller and this mix turned to be seriously entertaining. Still, to be honest, even though the plot was sometimes rather murky (which is typical of the genre), it was basically a very typical  and rather generic spy story. Same thing about the characters, even though Charlize Theron and James McAvoy did deliver some solid performances, their respective characters turned out to be fun but they were never really fascinating. In spite all this, the whole thing looked fine, the action scenes were top-notch and I loved how they played around the fact that it was taking place at the time that the Berlin Wall was going to fall. To conclude, it turned out to be a very well made and fairly original action flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 24 August 2018 07:07 (A review of Flavors of Youth)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I thought it was directed by Makoto Shinkai who made the massively successful 'Your Name.' but it was in fact directed by 3 other guys. Anyway, it wasn't a big deal as it turned out to be a fine watch after all. Indeed, it was so refreshing to see a traditionally hand-drawn animated feature and I really enjoyed these three little romantic tales. The first story was about some noodles and it reminded me of 'Tampopo' with its delicious food and I really enjoyed the nostalgic and melancholic tone. The second short story involving 2 sisters was probably the least successful one maybe because I have a hard time believing that the life of a top model could be so difficult. Furthermore, the link with the main theme was rather thin in my opinion. Eventually, the last short-story was maybe the best one as it was just so romantic but also really realistic and I could really relate with the main character. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was still a fine anthology and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 24 August 2018 08:11 (A review of The Meg)

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick, especially after I watched the trailer which made the whole thing looked really lame. However, Nick, my step-son, was really eager to check it out so  I still saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Well, eventually, I have to admit that it was not so bad at all after all. I mean, sure, it was still nothing groundbreaking but, for a shark movie, it turned out to be actually fairly entertaining. Indeed, I was slightly worried about the jokes but even though those were barely funny, they didn’t turn out to be too annoying. Same thing with the romantic link between Jason Statham and Bingbing Li, it was pretty pathetic and they had no chemistry whatsoever but it wasn’t really a big deal either. But, obviously, this movie was mostly about a big fat shark and this beast was quite impressive. Concerning the complaints of Jason Statham that the movie didn’t turn out to be as gore as he had expected, it really didn’t bother me either. Indeed, the action scenes were pretty badass and I don’t think that tons of blood or seeing some shredded limbs in closed-up would have be such an improvement. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, it turned out to be a decent watch after all and I think it might be worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 23 August 2018 08:19 (A review of Ghost in the Shell)

I already saw this movie but since I just bought an awesome brand new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though this movie was a critical and commercial flop when it was released, to be honest, I don’t think it was so bad after all. Indeed, the whole thing looked amazing, the action scenes were badass and they managed to nail the mood of the original Japanese animated feature. However, even if the story was decent enough, unfortunately, they did make some mistakes though. Of course, there was the whole controversy about casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead role and I think she was indeed miscast but not because she is not Asian. I mean, since Johansson is one of the only bankable actresses in the world, it completey made sense that the producers chose her so the whole white-washing controversy was rather ridiculous and even Mamoru Oshii, the director of 'Kokaku Kidotai', gave his blessing. What bother me with her was the fact she was just too small to play the Major (1,60 meters), she wasn’t physically threatening enough and I never had the feeling that she was actually a lethal killing machine. Furthermore, even though she is usually a decent actress, I thought she gave a rather weak performance which was rather surprising since she complained nailed it a couple of years ago with a similar character in ‘Under the Skin’. On the other hand, she wasn’t helped by the fact that they pretty much ruined her character. Indeed, one of the major trademarks of ‘Ghost in Shell’ is the fact that the Major is a cold, mysterious and ambiguous character. The fact that she might be struggling with her identity was always only implied and never really stated but, in this US version, it became a major focus which completely changed this character and, in the process, she became just too weak and emotional. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think that it could have been so much worse and I believe it is actually worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 22 August 2018 08:20 (A review of Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke)

Since this movie has a really solid reputation (it is even included in '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die' list), I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. Well, eventually, it turned out to be a decent stoner comedy but definitely not the best I have seen and, in this genre, I actually  enjoyed much more 'Friday' and 'Pineapple Express'. I mean, I didn't mind the randomness, it obviously goes with the territory, the main issue was above all the fact that the jokes were just so hit-and-miss. However, I have to admit that some of the scenes were indeed quite hilarious but, to be honest, many jokes were actually barely amusing. Furthermore, the whole concept of the truck made of weed was a rather weak idea and I think it would have been more fun to have these two stoners endlessly looking for some weed and getting in trouble in the process. On top of that, I had a rather hard time to care about these 2 guys. Indeed, Cheech and Chong were not bad but not really amazing and the supporting characters were even less entertaining. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn't live up to my expectations, it was still a decent comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 22 August 2018 11:38 (A review of It )

I already saw this movie but since ‘It: Chapter Two’ was now available on Netflix, I was quite eager to watch again this first instalment. In fact, I was actually supposed to see this movie when it was released but, at the last minute, Nick, my step-on, bailed out and, instead, we went to see at the time ‘The Hitman's Bodyguard’ which turned out to be really forgettable. Coming back to our main feature, well, the first time around, even though I did like it, somehow, it didn’t really completely blow me away though. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I saw the acclaimed TV mini-series less than a year before. However, I have to admit that, with this version, they improved pretty much everything that was disappointing with the TV mini-series. Indeed, the directing was pretty good, the special effets were top-notch and the kids all gave some solid performances, especially Sophia Lillis. Concerning Bill Skarsgård, he gave a completely different performance than Tim Curry but he did a really fine job as well. So, it was all fine and, yet, the whole thing never really grabbed me. Maybe it was because I already knew where everything was leading to, maybe it was because it was too faithful to the book (which I haven’t actually read). Indeed, when Cary Fukunaga was still involved, he had removed many famous scenes from the book which were added back by Andy Muschietti afterwards and maybe Fukunaga's approach would have been more interesting. Still, it remains by far one of the best stories delivered by Stephen King and I’m glad I gave it a 2nd chance since I actually enjoyed it more this time around. Anyway, to conclude, it is definitely a really solid horror flick and it is really worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 21 August 2018 12:03 (A review of The Ridiculous 6)

Since this movie has a rather lame reputation, I wasn't expecting much but I still ended up watching the damned thing anyway. Well, to be honest, even though I have never cared for Adam Sandler's work, I didn't think it was so awful after all. I mean, sure, it was still pretty lame and not really funny at all but the guy had done much worse in the past and I don't think it was such a bad idea to mix his humor with the Western genre. At least, it was more original than most of his flicks and the cast involved was pretty decent. Helll, I even thought that Taylor Lautern was actually funny. However, as usual with Sandler, the whole thing was still rather misguided. For example, it was so annoying that he gave himself a character who had some kind of super-powers. Seriously, it was just rather pathetic but the other brothers were also all more pathetic and actually really entertaining. The other huge mistake they made was that the damned thing was just so freaking long. Indeed, it could have been almost watchable with a standard 90 mins duration but, unfortunately, it lasted almost 2 hours and the last act was especially so tedious to behold. Anyway, to conclude, I don't think it is one of Sandler's worst efforts but, don't be fooled, it was still really weak and you should rather avoid it.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 20 August 2018 08:25 (A review of Fading Gigolo)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Unfortunately, like most movies dealing with male prostitution, the whole thing just felt seriously misguided. Indeed, even though it was probably supposed to be some quirky comedy, it turned out to be actually rather pretentious and even misogynist. I mean, I do have a weak spot for John Turturro but, not only he gave  himself the lead role of the gigolo, but this guy was of course a great lover but also a masseur, a  competent cook, a flower expert and he could speak maybe 4 or 5 different languages. To make things even more convoluted, our gigolo gets involved with some very religious Jewish widow so it seemed that the whole thing would become some doomed love story but she suddenly dropped him towards the end. Seriously, pretty much nothing worked in this movie which is too bad because the women involved (Vanessa Paradis, Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara) all delivered some solid performances. It's such a pity above all for Paradis who very rarely gets involved in some US productions. Anyway, to conclude, even though I have seen worse, I thought it was pretty weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 11 August 2018 10:03 (A review of Eye in the Sky)

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out. Well, after the rather disappointing 'Good Kill', it was pretty neat to finally see a really good movie dealing with the modern drone warfare. Indeed, they had a stellar cast and all the actors involved delivered some really solid performances. Even more important, it was simply a really good story, at the same time quite realistic but still really entertaining and it was dealing with a very topical subject. Furthermore, they didn't make the same mistake as the makers of 'Good Kill' as they didn't develop at all the private lives of the characters involved which was the best approach for this material. Still, there was one thing that did bother me though. Indeed, I can imagine that some of the politicians would have some scruples about killing some innocent girl but I thought it was harder to believe that most of the military personnel would also struggle so much with this decision. Sure, as an explanation, Aaron Paul's character mentioned that he never had to fire a missile before but, still, they pushed it too far by having both pilots crying at the end of their mission. Eventually, it shows that to work in the military sector remains just so lousy, even  if it might be originally for a good cause. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was missing something to become truly amazing, it was still a really solid thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 11 August 2018 06:27 (A review of Oceans)

Since I always had a weak sport for Jacques Perrin's nature documentaries, I was quite eager to check this one out as well. Well, once again, Perrin delivered some visually amazing scenes combined with some very nice music. Indeed, there is something so fascinating and relaxing about his work and it goes way beyond what you could see on National Geographic for instance. The only thing that prevented this movie from being truly amazing was the addition of some boring and misguided comments. Indeed, Perrin's awesome trademark has been in the past to show his images without someone constantly explaining what was going on which is such a great approach but, here, there was still some really useless narration that did break the spell. At least, this narration was only sporadic. To make things worse, in the 3rd act, they started to give also some preachy ecological message which was actually rather annoying. I mean, sure, what they said was accurate but these movies should remain some work of Art instead of being used for some political agenda. Anyway, in spite of these flaws, it was still a really strong documentary and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
