An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 19 September 2018 09:07 (A review of Sabotage )

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for David Ayer's work, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, after watching this movie, I understand why he had been chosen to direct 'Suicide Squad' and why it turned out to be a failure. Indeed, pretty much like in 'Suicide Squad', it was dealing with a really badass team of lethal misfits but, also just like in 'Suicide Squad', the story was just a huge mess. Apparently, David Ayer argued that the movie had been heavily cut by the studio but I wonder if a longer running time would have been such an improvement. I mean, I was still able to follow what was going on, it's not that it was so confusing, it's just that it was just really poorly put together. It was basically one of those movies that keep throwing some twists at the viewers hoping that we won't notice how weak the story actually is. It's too bad because this elite DEA squad team was pretty awesome and Arnold Schwarzenegger gave here easily one of his best performances as he had the opportunity to play a much more interesting character than the characters he usually get in his usual action flicks. Anyway, to conclude, I think I might have been rather generous with my rating here but I guess it might still be worth a look, if only to see Arnold Schwarzenegger playing an intriguing character for once.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 19 September 2018 08:07 (A review of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back)

To be honest, I was rather surprised that they would come up with a sequel for ā€˜Jack Reacher’. I mean, sure, it was actually a decent action flick but it was still nothing groundbreaking and, above all, it didn’t turn out to be a huge success at theĀ  box-office. However, it seems that Tom Cruise didn’t accept this semi-failure and he still pushed to make this sequel. Well, to be honest, even though it was watchable, it wasn’t really good, I’m afraid. I mean, the intro was not bad and the story was entertaining enough until Reacher managed to get Turner out of jail but, from the moment they started to work together, the whole thing became terribly generic and bairly entertaining. Another thing that bothered me was that, even though they keep hammering the fact that Jack Reacher always works alone, in both movies in this franchise, he ends up with a hot female partner. It was also a huge mistake to give Jack Reacher a daughter and it didn’t help that this character was just poorly written and poorly played by Danika Yarosh. Eventually, the only thing that saved this movie from becoming really average was Tom Cruise’s charisma and the fact that Jack Reacher remains a pretty cool character. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was rather generous with my rating here but I guess it might still be worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 17 September 2018 09:27 (A review of A Wrinkle in Time)

I already saw this movie but, since it was a while back and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well give it another chance. I remember it very well when it was released, it was at the time a massive critical and commercial flop. Well, unfortunately, after all these years, I’m afraid the damned thing was still seriously weak. Basically, it was supposed to be some kind of cute, whimsical and perhaps even inspiring tale but it just never worked. While re-watching it, I was thinking that it must feel like this when you get some bad acid-trip. I mean, sure, visually, it looked pretty good but the end-result was pretty much a mix of really random and weird scenes. To make things worse, most of the dialogues was filled with some incomprehensible mambo-jambo involving something called Camazotz, some tesseract and three mysterious misses who really came out from nowhere. At least, Storm Reid had some charisma and displayed some potential in spite of this poor material. In fact, there was actually a really strong cast involved (Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Michael PeƱa, AndrĆ© Holland) but it was rather embarrassing to see them struggling to make something interesting and/or entertaining from this material. I haven’t read the book which is apparently really popular but you might wonder if it might be actually adaptable to the silver screen but there is no doubt that this attempt was a huge failure. But, above all, I felt bad for Ava DuVernay. Indeed, it was such a historical event that a black woman had the opportunity to direct such a big budget feature. Fortunately, she made a nice rebound the following year with ā€˜When They See Us’  which was quite amazing. Anyway, to conclude, I was just bored by the damned thing, it was not only weak, it was also seriously pretentious, and I don't think it is really worth a look.

A very good movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 16 September 2018 04:28 (A review of BlacKkKlansman)

I have always been a big fan of Spike Lee but, to honest, it had been years since the guy made something really amazing. Fortunately, he made an impressive comeback with this movie. Indeed, it worked on so many levels. It was a fun and entertaining police thriller, a sometimes hilarious satire and it also had a powerful message and it is so rare to find a movie managing to mix so many tones and doing it so well. The main character, very well played by John David Washington (yes, the son of Denzel Washington),Ā  was also complex and interesting showing some genuine internal conflict between his loyalty to his black folks but also towards his colleagues and his work as a cop. Eventually, in my opinion, the main core was to show that racism in general and the Ku Klux Klan in particular are basically based on ignorance because, at the end of day, it is ridiculous to argue that the color of your skin should make you a better or a worse person. There was one scene that did bother me though and it was when they played a trick to arrest one of the racist cops. It came out of nowhere, it felt rather fake and it could have been easily removed since it didn't have any impact on the main story but, fortunately, it wasn't a big deal. Anyway, to conclude, it was a really entertaining and powerful movie and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 15 September 2018 09:18 (A review of Force Majeure)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I kept hearing some pretty good things about it, I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, it was some kind of character study, showing how a couple might evolve after a near tragedy. And I guess, that's what we do, the spoiled privileged Western people, we tend to over think and over analyse everything since we didn't have to face a war on our soil for already 70 years, we didn't have to face hunger or some other massive dramatic situation. As a result, we play such scenarios like 'what would you do if you were drowning? Would you save yourself of your children?' But even though the avalanche was really scary, it was eventually rather harmless and nobody got hurt so you might wonder why the characters wouldn't just laugh about it and move on with their life. Furthermore, another tricky thing was that you never get to see this family before, in their every day life, which make it rather difficult to judge them. It was also rather odd that the mother would discuss this matter with some total strangers who couldn't possible take a position since they didn't know her and her husband. Also, I wasn't so sure about the ending scene. Obviously, it was to reverse the roles as the mother was leaving the bus on her own but her family came with her so I don't think it really worked. Anyway, it was still an interesting film which developed some nice ideas and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like theĀ  genre.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 14 September 2018 08:40 (A review of Transformers: The Last Knight)

I already saw this movie but, for some reason, I thought it would be a great idea to rewatch the whole transformers franchise. Anyway, even though I have to admit that I actually enjoy the first installment, all the sequels turned out to be disappointing so I wasn’t expecting much from this last instalment, especially since it was the lowest grossing film of this franchise (it still made $600 million worldwide though). Well, the whole thing turned out to be indeed pretty weak and it was easily the weakest instalment in this already seriously underwhelming franchise. In fact, I have to admit that there was some potential about showing that the Transformers have always been there in fact in the past but this idea was just so poorly developed. Basically, the whole thing was some kind of mix of ā€˜Prometheus’ with ā€˜Armageddon’ but it never worked. Seriously, it was just another overlong mess and it was in fact so convoluted that at times it barely made sense. Honestly, there was so much going on and, even though I saw it only yesterday, I’m afraid I forgot already half of it. Ā Eventually, the whole thing was just so idiotic but also sometimes rather pretentious. Anyway, the main issue was that it was again so boring and even the special effects which used to be quite amazing 10 years ago with the first instalment didn’t really impress me anymore. At least, it seems that it will be Michael Bay’s last transformer film as a director so maybe someone else could resurrect this franchise but the damage done by Bay has been huge, I’m afraid. Anyway, to conclude, this movie is basically the poster child of major franchise saturation and I don’t think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 13 September 2018 07:56 (A review of Above the Law)

To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of Steven Seagal but I was still intrigued by this movie since it was Seagal’s acting debut and since it was directed by Andrew Davis who had delivered some solid action flicks during his career. Well, it turned out to be seriously weak after all, in fact, even though it was barely 21:00 when I watched the damned thing, I still struggled to not fall asleep. Back then, following the release of this movie, Seagal was hailed as the next big action movie star but, to be honest, the guy was and still is such a weak actor. At least, he was a real Aikido master so the fight scenes were pretty good and Pam Grier was actually not bad at all as she was a different and interesting partner but that was pretty much the only positive things I could find regarding this movie. I mean, seriously, the story was a mess. Indeed, they tell you that the guy has learned martial arts in Japan, fought in the Vietnam war as a CIA agent and then became a cop in Chicago and that was only during the first 10 mins. Eventually, that’s probably what bother me the most with this actor, in this movie but also in general, was the fact that he is so pretentious. On a side note, Sharon Stone who was at the time one of the sexiest actress in the world played here probably her most boring character. Anyway, to conclude, I really didn’t like the damned thing, I think I was actually rather generous with my rating here and I don’t think it is really worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 12 September 2018 08:41 (A review of Laggies)

I already saw this movie but, for some reason, I thought I might as well check it out again. I have to admit that, the first time around, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick and I was mostly interested by the nice cast involved. Well, the cast was indeed pretty good (Keira Knightley, ChloĆ« Grace Moretz, Sam Rockwell) and they all played some interesting and rather complex characters. Furthermore, it was dealing with something interesting, with the fact that even if you make some amazing friends during your teenage years, there is no guarantee that, 10 years later, you will still feel the same regarding these friends. So, the concept was interesting but, unfortunately, it was just rather poorly developed and, eventually, the story turned out be rather weird and even borderline idiotic. Indeed, when the main character started to struggle with her feeling towards her group of friends and even towards her boyfriend, what did she do? Well, she just disappeared and started to hang out with a group of teenagers…. Seriously, how was that supposed to be an improvement? How was it supposed to help her out in any way? However, it didn’t stop there and the whole thing became even more moronic when Megan decided to sleep over a whole week at this teenager’s house. The problem wasn’t that it was inappropriate, the problem was that it was just so weird as pointed out by Sam Rockwell’s character. And, of course, the fact that Megan fell in love with the father of her new friend didn’t help either. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I actually liked these characters, the concept actually had some potential and I think it is worth a look but there is no denying that the whole thing felt like a missed opportunity.

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 11 September 2018 08:20 (A review of Kill Your Darlings)

Since I have always been interested in Ā the writers of the Beat Generation, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, when watching this kind of movies dealing with the life of famous writers, I do fell slightly guilty. Indeed, instead of watching such movies, shouldn’t I be reading the books written by these great artists? At least, I have read a couple of books written by Jack Kerouack but I still haven’t read anything from Allen Ginsberg and, more important, still nothing from William S. Burroughs. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it turned out to be a decent watch even if it wasn’t maybe nothing really groundbreaking. Indeed, the beginning was rather weak as it is always a rather weak gimmick to start with a murder which will occur at the end. Then, they tried to introduce Allen Ginsberg’s home situation but this bit was just too short and it should have been either developed or removed completely. Ā Still, the makers chose an interesting part of their history as this murder had a huge impact on all these writers. Furthermore, the cast was really solid (Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Michael C. Hall, Ben Foster, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Elizabeth Olsen, Kyra Sedgwick) . To conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was not bad at all and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in the Beat generation.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 6 years, 9 months ago on 10 September 2018 04:59 (A review of European Vacation)

To be honest, since I had been hardly impressed by 'Vacation', I wasn't really expecting much from this sequel but since it was directed by Amy Heckerling, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be seriously weak, I'm afraid. Indeed, even though it made sense that the Griswolds would go to Europe with this sequel, the whole thing turned out to be the usual awful comedy about US tourists visiting various European countries. Seriously, while watching this movie, you might wonder who is actually more stupid: the people loving this garbage or the people who made this garbage. I mean, the first scene involved a TV-show host kissing and touching a teenage girl which was just so cringe-inducing. The rest was not much better, I'm afraid, as it was just a succession of awful boring and sometimes bordeline offensive jokes about people living in Europe. At least, Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo had once again a pretty good chemistry but that's probably the only positive thing I could find about this movie. At least, if they would have kept the same actors to play their kids, it could have been nice to see them grow up through the different sequels but they were unfortunately recast. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was actually rather generous with my rating here, the damned thing was just seriously weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.
