A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 4 February 2017 07:22 (A review of Team Foxcatcher)

Not so long ago, I saw 'Foxcatcher' and I know it might seem weird to watch so soon after this documentary. The point is that, even if I did like 'Foxcatcher', it didn't completely blow me away and, above all, it bothered me that the whole thing remained so dammed ambiguous. As a result, I was quite eager to learn more about this really weird but also fascinating story. Well, I thought that this documentary was slightly better but only slightly and I think that both movies are worth a look eventually. The first weird thing about this movie was that Mark Schultz, who was also member of the Foxcatcher wrestling team and a major character Ā in 'Foxcatcher' was never mentioned or interviewed for this movie. My guess is that the guy, for some reason, didn't want to get involved with this project. On the other hand, you get to learn more about his brother, David Schultz, who was not only one of the best American wrestlers but also a very nice guy and one of the very few people who actually seemed to care about John Du Pont which made his fate even more heartbreaking. To conclude, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you want to learn more about this subject.

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, even though many are some huge fans of this movie and would argue that it is superior to its predecessor. to be honest, I have never been completely sold by the damned thing. I mean, every time I watch it, I like it and I'm entertained throughout the whole duration but it never completey blows me away. I have to admit it though, it was visually impressive with a great mood from the beginning until the end and I also enjoyed the way they managed to bring back Ripley to this infected planet. Furthermore, Sigourney Weaver delivered a very strong performance and made Ellen Ripley a fascinating character to follow. So, what was my problem with the damned thing? Well, in my opinion, just like with all the other sequels in this franchise, it is basically a remake of the masterpiece made by Ridley Scott. Sure, they gave it a new look, some impressive action pieces and it felt more like an action flick this time around but, at the end, it basically followed the same plot. Furthermore, except for Ellen Ripley, all the characters were terribly stereotypical and barely interesting. Finally, I thing they tried to add too much humor and, as a result, Bill Paxton was rather cringe-inducing throughout the whole thing. Anyway, even though I don't think it is such a masterpiece, it is still a fine science-fiction picture and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 3 February 2017 10:05 (A review of Pink Floyd: The Wall)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again.Ā  Well, first of all, I have to point out that I’m a huge fan of Pink Floyd, it is easily one of my favorite bands, and The Wall was one of their best albums so, obviously, I always had a weak spot for this movie. On the other hand, I have to admit that, if you are not into their music, there is a fair chance that this flick will be rather boring for you. Indeed, if you take the scenes one by one, there was some strong stuff. Ā I think my favorite parts about the young boy growing up without his father and the animated scenes were also pretty neat. Unfortunately to be honest, the way the scenes were all put together, it was quite a mess, I’m afraid. At best, it could be seen as a very long video clip or as some kind of dark feverish dream. It is interesting to note that, even though this movie has become a major cult-classic especially among the fans of Pink Floyd, all the members of Pink Floyd and Alan Parker all thought that this movie was actually rather disappointing. Anyway, even though it might not be a masterpiece, I still think it is worth a look and if you are fan of Pink Floyd like me, it is pretty much a must-see.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 2 February 2017 10:02 (A review of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk)

Following the masssive critical and commercial success of ā€˜Life of Pi’, many, including myself, were expecting a lot from Ang Lee’s next directing effort. This time, he was going for something even more experimental, a movie shot with 120 frame rate, the highest frame rate ever used in a movie (to give an idea, the previous record holder was ā€˜The Hobbit’ with 48 fps and a standard film has 24 fps). Unfortunately, when this movie was released, it didn’t get much love and the whole thing was pretty much considered as a failed experiment. Still, since I always had a weak spot for Ang Lee’s work, I still wanted to check it out. Well, eventually, I thought it was rather difficult to judge this movie. First of all, I have to admit it, I didn’t manage to watch this movie in its intented version, I actually saw it at home on a regular TV so the whole technical aspect was lost on me, I’m afraid. On the other hand, I’m not sure if this story really needed such a high-tech treatment. I mean, for such a huge epic blockbusters like ā€˜The Hobbit’ or ā€˜Avatar’, the material definitely could use some visual innovation but this was just a rather low-key drama. Eventually, except for the half-time show which must have been Ā interesting in this format, the rest of the movie was above all about the characters in some conversations involving usually only 2 or 3 people and I didn’t see how this format could have been an improvement. Anyway, as pointed out by many other viewers, the biggest issue with this movie was above all that the story was nothing really amazing. I mean, it was not bad and the cast was actually decent but it didn’t tell anything really fascinating or groundbreaking. To conclude, like everyone else, I think the whole thing was a rather failed experiment but I still think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Ang Lee’s work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 1 February 2017 08:34 (A review of Killing Season)

To be honest, since most of the movies involving Robert De Niro and John Travolta nowadays are some direct-to-dvd releases, it didn’t expect much from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for these two actors, I thought I might still check it out. Well, eventually, the damned thing turned out to be seriously underwhelming, I’m afraid. To begin with, it seemed at first like a poor choice to have a highly recognizable American actor like Travolta to play a Serbian soldier but I have to admit that he actually pulled it off. In fact, surprisingly, it was actually De Niro who seemed miscast in this movie. Indeed, he might have been more convincing maybe 20 years ago but, for this movie, I never believed he was some kind of bad-ass veteran soldier. For this part, someone like Clint Eastwood would have worked much better. Eventually, De Niro was not even the biggest problem with this movie. Indeed, the biggest issue was that the whole thing was just some rather tedious cat-and-mouse game between these 2 characters. Seriously, it was never really entertaining and interesting whatsoever. To conclude, even though the concept had some potential, the whole thing was pretty weak and I don’t think it is really worth a look.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 31 January 2017 08:34 (A review of Tangerine)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie and the main reason I wanted to check it out was because it was included last year in the ’1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’. To be honest, it seemed to be one of these really obscure entries that they add every year just so the list might seem edgy but, usually, those movies are removed directly the year after. Furthermore, I had the feeling that this movie was somewhat surfing on the current hype around the transgender topic. Still, it was quite an intriguing feature nonetheless. Ā Indeed, it was definitely a really raw and realistic look on the life of some transgender prostitutes working in Hollywood and you definitely get another view on the American dream. Furthermore, the two main characters, Alexandra and Sin-Dee Rella (yeah, seriously) were at first rather annoying but, slowly, I actually started to care for them and I came to the conclusion that even though life doesn’t seem to have much to offer for them, they still have some inner strength and even sometimes a wicked sense of humor. While watching this movie, I was also thinking that if a transgender man and woman is not well off and doesn’t have the full support of their family, do they really have another option than the prostitution sector? I mean, to change sex is a really expensive process and most employer would’t hire them for a regular job. Anyway, to conclude, even though I don’t think it was really a masterpiece, it was still a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 29 January 2017 05:07 (A review of Shadow Dancer)

I really had no idea what ot expect from this movie but since I always had a weak spot for James Mash's work, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I was actually amazed about how half-baked the damned thing actually turned out to be. I mean, it's not that it was a bad movie, the directing and acting were decent enough and it was actually rather watchable but it must be one of the least remarkable movies I have seen dealing wit this subject. Indeed, by now, I have seen enough movies dealing with the civil war in Northern Ireland and, I don't know, there is something about this conflict that makes it interesting and really dramatic. I guess, it is a little bit like the conflict between Israƫl and Palestina, in the sense that these people could live in harmony but, mostly because they don't have the same religion, they had been butchering each other for decades. Anyway, if some of those movies dealing with this conflict were really quite impressive, that wasn't one of them, I'm afraid. I mean, the opening scene was really strong and introduced most of the important players right from the start in a very effective way but the rest of the movie never really dazzled me. The biggest mistake, in my opinion, was to have Clive Owen's character getting so attached with his informant and it would have worked better if he didn't care so much about what would happen to her. On the other hand, the motivations of the main character were also never clearly stated either. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look, even if it is the weakest movie directed by James Marsh that I have seen so far.

A classic

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 28 January 2017 08:43 (A review of Alien)

In 2017, Ridley Scott will come up with another installment for this franchise and, hopefully, it will be better than 'Prometheus' which seemed to be at first really promising but eventually it turned out to be rather disappointing. In the mean time, I thought I might as well re-watch this first installment which has always been a massive science-fiction classic. To be honest, I have to admit that I always preffered 'Blade Runner' Ā which is more challenging and interesting in my opinion but this movie is still really awesome. I mean, there are so many iconic landmarks here : Ripley, the Alien, the chest-bursting scene, Ash,... Visually, it was really impressive and Ridley Scott managed to create a really oppressive mood which has been copied so many times afterwards. Obviously, back in those days, they didn't have any CGI at their disposal so it was pretty obvious that the alien was mostly a guy wearing a suit and some people might argue that it didn't look really convincing. On the other hand, as a result they used pretty much the same method used in 'Jaws' which was to show the monster as less as possible and, just like in 'Jaws', it made the whole thing even more tensed and spellbinding to behold. To conclude, even though it is almost 40 years old, the whole thing still looks terrific, it remains one of the best science-fiction movies out there and it is pretty much a must-see for any decent movie buff.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 28 January 2017 08:33 (A review of The Man Who Fell to Earth)

I already saw this movie but, the first time around, it was on the BBC without subtitles so I thought I might as well check it out again with subtitles this time to see if I could then get a better grip on the damned thing this way. Well, to be honest, I was amazed by how little I actually remembered it. Seriously, except for the fact that Newton arrived with some revolutionary patents from his planet and became rich with these patents, I absolutely didn't remember anything else at all which is rather odd since I saw it only 6 years ago. Anyway, the damned thing is actually a huge mess but I guess it is also what makes it appealing. Indeed, it must be by far one of the weirdest alien features I have ever seen though. Basically, it was a little bit like 'E.T.', except that the alien character was not a puppet but was played by David Bowie and, above all, that the makers were apparently all running on acid. First of all, let's state the obvious, Bowie was basically born to play such a character. Back in those days, the rock star was actually a major drug addict but, even without the drugs, the way he looked and his attitude was just perfect to play this alien creature. Concerning the movie itself, well, it was rather hit and miss, to be honest. I mean, its random and experimental aspect made the whole thing rather unique but also terribly messy and, very often, I had seriously no idea what the hell was going on. Furthermore, it didn't help that I didn't care much for any other character involved, especially the characters played by Rip Torn and Candy Clark. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it is still an interesting cult-classic though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 4 months ago on 27 January 2017 08:36 (A review of Sin Nombre)

Since I really loved the first season of ā€˜True Detective’ and ā€˜Beasts of No Nation’ as well, I was quite eager to check Cary Joji Fukunaga’sĀ  directing debut. To be honest, I thought it was rather tricky to judge this movie. Indeed, a couple of years ago, I saw ā€˜La jaula de oro’ which basically had more or less the same plot and, even though ā€˜La jaula de oro’ is not as well known as ā€˜Sin nombre’, I thought it was actually slightly better. On the other hand, it is rather unfair since ā€˜Sin nombre’ was actually released 4 years before ā€˜La jaula de oro’, and, it is pretty much like saying that a remake is better than the original just because I saw the remake first. Anyway, in spite of all this, it was another very strong movie from Fukunaga. Indeed, pretty much like with ā€˜Beasts of No Nation’, they went for a hyper-realistic approach and the whole thing was quite heartbreaking but still spellbinding to watch. Eventually, it gives a clear view on how desperate the people south of the border have become and, after watching this movie, there is a good change that you might understand the horrors they have to face during their journey to get to the US. To conclude, I thought it was a very good drama about a very topical subject and it is definitely worth a look.
