A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 12 January 2017 11:02 (A review of A Beautiful Mind)

I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago, I was quite eager to check it again. In fact, I remember it very well, the first time I saw it, I was not really interested by the whole thing but after it won the Best Picture Academy award, I thought I might as well give it a try. So, I went to see it in the theater, without knowing the plot or who the hell was John Nash and I must admit it, I was actually positively surprised. Indeed, since I didn’t know what it was about, I really didn't expect it when Nash started to become insane and it made for a rather intriguing viewing. Since then, the opinions on this flick have been rather polarized though. Indeed, some think it is really amazing and some others think it is one of the most overrated features to win the big prize at the Academy awards. Personally, I think it is not bad but, on the other hand, it was also rather obvious that Ron Howard basically chickened out and removed many dark elements surrounding John Nash’s life, elements which could have made the movie really and truly brilliant. Eventually, did it really deserve to win the Best Picture Academy Award? Certainly not. Was Ron Howard really the most adequate director for this job? Absolutely not. However, it is still quite a fascinating story, Russell Crowe did deliver a really solid performance and since it is one of the very few big budget movies that was dealing with schizophrenia, it gets a few extra points from me. Anyway, to conclude, even though I wasn’t completely sold by the whole thing, it was still a decent biopic and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 11 January 2017 03:47 (A review of Actors)

Well, basically, it is another obscure French movie that almost no one has seen here on Listal (apparently, only 3 other Listal members have rated this movie so far).  In fact, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Well, on paper, the whole thing sounded quite amazing.  Indeed, this time around, Bertrand Blier, one of the most interesting French directors at the time, came up with some feature involving pretty much everything single famous French actor. Unfortunately, even though you might have expected something like a French version of ‘Ocean’s Eleven’, the whole thing turned out to be rather underwhelming after all. The main issue is that, beside the fact that it was really fun to see all these famous actors all together, this movie didn’t have much else to offer, I’m afraid, and I wish they at least tried to develop something to tell around all these actors. Apparently, Blier was actually planning to come up with a follow-up focusing this time on French actresses but since this movie didn’t become such a huge success, he apparently cancelled the whole thing. Anyway, to conclude, even though this feature didn’t really fulfill my expectations, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 11 January 2017 12:07 (A review of Alex & Emma)

Back in the 80’s, Rob Reiner was easily one of the most successful American directors but ever since the huge debacle called ‘North’, the guy has never managed to get back his magic touch. Since I always had a weak spot for his work, I still watched most of the movies he made afterwards (7 out 11) but this feature must be the weakest one he has directed so far, after the abysmal ‘North’ of course. Honestly, even though the whole thing was rather harmless, nothing actually worked in this movie. Indeed, the concept was just lame and the characters were rather boring so it was rather hopeless from the very beginning. At least, I have to admit it, Kate Hudson was really cute back in those days but I never believed in Luke Wilson’s potential as a romantic lead and I don’t think they had much chemistry together. Above all, it was a rather sad affair for Sophie Marceau. Indeed, it is not very often that you get the opportunity to see the lovely French actress in a US production so you wonder why she chose a project so underwhelming. Anyway, even though I have seen worse, the whole thing was pretty weak and I don’t think it is worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 10 January 2017 08:52 (A review of Sixteen Candles)

To be honest, I always had a hard time with John Hughes, but since this movie had a decent reputation,  I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, I have to admit that it was actually not bad at all. Sure, it never reached the level of 'The Breakfast Club' which would remain forever his only real masterpiece but it was still a decent a directing debut. Indeed, even though I tend to think that John Hugues gets too much credit for his depiction of teenagers in the 80’s, I have to admit that he did a fine job here and the whole thing worked really well as long as it remained realistic. At first, I had my doubts about Molly Ringwald as I thought she was actually too pretty for this part but she eventually won me over. The fact that she was really 16 years old around the time of filming was a great asset as well. Unfortunately, when they tried to be funny, half of the jokes were actually rather weak or even lame. For example, the wedding scene at the end was seriously pathetic. On the other hand, the small brother Mike Baker was quite hilarious. Anyway, to conclude, even if it wasn’t really flawless, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 10 January 2017 10:31 (A review of A Life Less Ordinary)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should probably re-watch it at some point. In fact, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Anyway, it must be the most obscure movie directed by Danny Boyle. It was also the last one he did with McGregor and since then, they have never worked together again, at least until ‘T2 Trainspotting’ which would be released 20 years later (Apparently, Ewan McGregor was Danny Boyle's first choice to play the main character for 'The Beach'. However, the studio wanted Leonardo DiCaprio and cast him before Boyle could intervene. While McGregor has blamed the studio, he has reportedly not spoken to Boyle for years.) Anyway, in my opinion, the biggest challenge for this movie was to come after such amazing movies like 'Trainspotting' and 'Shallow Grave'. Indeed, I have to admit hat it never managed to reach this level of awesomness but it was never meant to do so in the first place. It is pretty obvious that, this time, they just wanted to have some fun and Boyle made in the process his most frivolous picture so far which was definitely not a bad thing. In my opinion, it is a light but entertaining feature, visually quite interesting and it’s too bad that it has always been overlooked.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 10 January 2017 09:20 (A review of Rock of Ages)

At first, this movie got some interesting buzz but, after it was released, it turned out to be a critical and commercial flop. Still, even though I didn’t expect much from the damned thing, since there was a pretty cool cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, it has been a while since I have seen such an underwhelming musical. Indeed, not only it was rather boring and really unoriginal but what bothered me the most was how they handled this material. Basically, I grew up in the 80’s and in the 90’s listening to this music and, in my opinion, the approach they chose for this movie didn’t work at all. Indeed, even though you might think they would try to give some hommage to the music of this time periode, in fact, they gave us some kind of satire which felt rather disrespectful and not entertaining whatsoever. Concerning the characters, even though there was a really nice cast involved, they all played some tedious stereotypes with Tom Cruis being the only exception. Apparently, it was a big challenge for him to get involved in such a musical but, even though his character was borderline ridiculous, Cruise still managed to make him interesting to follow and I wish the movie focused instead on him. Anyway, to conclude, the whole thing was really weak and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 9 January 2017 04:19 (A review of Absolute Power)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Basically, Clint Eastwood had reached some personal high as a director but, after making 3 of his best movies back-to-back. However, for some reasons,  it seems that the guy thought it was enough for the time being and he started to direct back to make some decent but slightly underwhelming flicks and it would take him about 8 years to finally impress us again with a downright masterpiece. In fact, to be honest, this was actually a pretty decent thriller, rather well made and quite entertaining. At least, it was better than ‘True Crime’ and even miles better than the tedious ‘Blood Work’ which remains one of his weakest efforts. Basically, it was once again a rather far-fetched story but Eastwood was immensely charismatic, Gene Hackman was solid as usual and it was a fun flick to watch, no more no less. To conclude, even though it was definitely a minor effort for Eastwood, it is definitely one of my guily pleasures and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in this director.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 9 January 2017 02:41 (A review of The Lover)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point.  First of all, the fact that I have not read the book probably allowed me to enjoy this movie more than it might deserve but I always had a weak spot for the damned thing and I believe it is one fo the best erotic thrillers out there. Sure, the story was rather generic and predictable and, at the end of the day, I don’t think that the characters were well developed. Eventually, it doesn’t really matter since the whole thing was more about the mood and, as a result, I thought it was quite spellbinding to be behold. Concerning the lovely Jane March, you might wonder if a movie like this one was the best way to start her career at about 18 years old. Eventually, even though she seemed to have indeed struggled with all the attention she got from this movie, her next project would be actually another erotic thriller called ‘Color of Night’ which turned out to be one of the worst movies ever made and her career was pretty much ruined for good after that. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, I thought  it was actually pretty good and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 8 January 2017 08:16 (A review of Jason Bourne)

To be honest, I'm not really sure what to make of this movie. In fact, I think I will need to re-watch it again to make up my mind for good about the damned thing. On the other hand, as my wife pointed out after we watched it together, maybe, I shoudn't spend too much time on this and move on. Anyway, basically, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass were at the time pretty vocal about the fact that they were done with this franchise and the only reason that they might come back was if they were provided a great script. So, after 10 long years, they were back in the game, so you might assume that it would be to tell us a fascinating story. Well, to be honest, even though it turned out to be a decent watch, it wasn't really much more than that. I mean, I really liked the realistic approach they took which has always been a trademark in this franchise and it was fairly entertaining but it never really impressed me. The first thing that bothered me was how on Earth did Nicky Parsons manage to find Jason Bourne? The way they met felt seriously random. You could argue that they kept in touch through all these years but how? If they did, it is difficult to believe that the CIA wouldn't have intercepted any of these communications as Bourne was one of the Most Wanted Men on earth. On top of that, I understand they always tried to link Bourne to a nice young lady and it worked fine with Franka Potente and Julia Stiles but I'm afraid it didn't really work with Alicia Vikander. I mean, she looked lovely and she gave a decent performance but she was at least 10 years too young to play this character. Furthermore, her whole plan of bringing back Bourne was rather preposterous. I mean, the guy has been on the run for more than a decade, killing numerous assets, compromizing some highly classified information and the agency would hire him again? I don't think so. Same thing for Bourne, actually. They have chased and tried to kill him for so many years, why on earth would he decide to work for them again? And yet, in spite of these flaws, I still think it is worth a look, even if it is pretty clear that it was in fact a rather useless sequel.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 7 January 2017 08:14 (A review of Assassin's Creed)

To be honest, I was actually planning to skip this movie but Nick, my step-son, was really eager to check it out so we still end up watching the damned thing. First of all, even though it looks really cool, I have to admit that I have actually never played this video-game. Anyway, concerning the movie itself, for a video-game adaptation, I turned out to be a decent watch but I will be really surprised if it would turn out to be a hit. I mean, with Michael Fassbender, they definitely got one of the best actors right now and he was a great choice for the main double part but, even though he tried really hard, the 2 characters Callum Lynch and Aguilar de Nerha were actually barely developed. In fact, none of the characters were properly developed. Furthermore, even though I guess the Animus must be something really important in the game, I thought it was rather useless for a movie. Indeed, get rid off the damned thing and just tell 2 stories taking place in 2 different time periods with 2 related characters, it would have worked much better. Finally, I think it is a good example why such video-game adaptations might never work. Indeed, while the scenes in Spain with Arguilar were quite impressive and apparently rather faithful to the game, they were actually rather boring. I mean, in a game, you are actually the protagonist and the interactivity is a main factor why a game is actually entertaining. With a movie, the interactivity is gone and terribly missed. Anyway, to conclude, all in all, I thought it was not bad and I guess it might be worth a look, at least if you are a fan of these games.
