A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 26 June 2016 09:17 (A review of Everest)

In my opinion, Baltasar KormĆ”kur has a rather mixed track-record as a director but this movie sounded really intriguing and, on top of that, they managed to get a impressive cast for this movie. Anyway, it was a really ambitious project and it thought that most of it worked pretty well. Indeed, I have always been fascinated with movies dealing with climbing, it is probably due to the fact that I'm afraid of heights but, even so, there something actually spellbinding to see some people risking their life just to get on the top of a mountain. Maybe there is also a little bit of sadism involved as well. Anyway, I especially enjoyed the realistic approach they chose for this movie but I'm afraid it never reached the level of 'Touching the Void', still by far the best movie in this genre. I guess the main problem was that, even though they had a really neat cast, there were just too many characters and, Ā as a result, none of them was properly developed. I mean, you basically have such actresses like Keira Knightley, Robin Wright and Emily Watson who shows up from time to time just to look worried when they answer their phone. It's like the characters played by Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin and Sam Worthington, I kept expecting to learn something about these guys but it never happened as the story never spends more than 2 minutes on one single character. As a result, you never get the opportunity to really care about these men and what they went through. Still, in spite of its flaws, I think it is one of the best movies in this genre and I think it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 25 June 2016 09:20 (A review of 22 Jump Street)

The first installment was supposed to be and should have been really lame but, Ā surprisingly, it turned out to be really fun Ā and enjoyable. With this sequel, it was pretty much the same, Ā there was no way that it could work as well and, yet, they did it again. Indeed, even though it was probably not an improvement on the first movie, Ā it was at least just as entertaining. Basically, this time, our heroes go to college going for another ridiculous investigation but, who cares about the plot, Ā it was once again another excuse to throw at us every 30 seconds some (usually) very funny meta-jokes. I especially enjoyed that they played around with the fact that there was actually something pretty gay about the relationship between the cops involved in the original TV-show. The only issue I might have had is that the running time was slightly too long for this material but it wasnā€™t a big deal. Right now, it seems that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller can do no wrong (indeed, Ā I have enjoyed all their directing efforts so far) Ā and their next one will be the Han Solo spin-off movie, easily their most ambitious project so far and I will definitely check it out. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it was definitely not a masterpiece whatsoever but it was still one of the most enjoyable comedies I have seen for a very long time.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 25 June 2016 03:45 (A review of Lucky Them)

I have to admit it it, the main reason why I wanted to watch this movie was because Johnny Depp was in it. Indeed, the huge star was in this movie for just one scene but he played a crucial character, some famous musician who disappeared 10 years before the actual story took place. I wish I didn't know this character would be played by Depp as it would have been really neat to discover it while watching the damned thing Ā but, Ā without this knowledge, I guess wouldn't have watched the damned thing at all (it is also rather lame that Depp is displayed so prominently on the IMDb page for this movie). Anyway, coming back to the damned thing, I thought this story actually had some great potential. Unfortunately, in fact like many other indie features starring Toni Colette, the whole thing was trying to be really too quirky. Take for example Thomas Haden Church's character, the guy was just impossibly cringe-inducing and it was only during the 3rd act that they finally balanced this character a little bit more but the damage was already done. Then, as I mentionned before , I really liked this story but this ending really didnā€™t do it any justice, in my opinion. To conclude, even though this interesting material was not very well developed, it was still a decent watch but I think it could have been much better.Ā

A bad movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 24 June 2016 08:21 (A review of Dumb and Dumber)

To be honest, I have never understood the appeal of this movie but, on the other hand, it has been a while since I saw it so maybe I should give it a 2nd chance. In fact, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Back then, out of nowhere, Jim Carrey took over the box-office following ā€˜Ace Ventura: Pet Detectiveā€™ and ā€˜The Maskā€™ and this movie would be his 3rd box-office hit all during 1994. Since I enjoyed both ā€˜Ace Ventura: Pet Detectiveā€™ and ā€˜The Maskā€™, I was quite eager to check this movie and I was expecting it to be seriously hilarious. Well, eventually, it turned out to be a massive disappointment, thatā€™s for sure. Of course, I fully understand that this movie was supposed to be dealing with some really stupid characters but, as far as I was concerned, I thought it was seriously cringe-inducing to behold and I canā€™t recall a single moment when I thought I was watching something really hilarious. The Farelly brothers would manage to strike gold again with ā€˜There's Something About Maryā€™ (another rather overrated comedy in my opinion) but most of their following movies would eventually under-perform at the box-office. Anyway,Ā  coming back to our main feature, I think it is one of the most overrated comedies ever made and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 23 June 2016 09:18 (A review of Steve Jobs)

When this movie was released, even though it was critically heralded, it turned out to be a box-office flop. Apparently, the audience didnā€™t care for another Steve Jobs biopic only a couple of years after another one, Ā even if it was apparently much superior than its predecessor. Even so, since it sounded really intriguing and since I have always been a big fan of Danny Boyle's work, I was still really eager to check it out. Well, eventually, I was really impressed. Indeed, I really loved this original approach and I thought it turned out to be a much more effective way to learn about a famous figure that the usual bullet points that you get with this genre. As a result, you really get the opportunity to dive into the psychological complexity of this character, thanks also to another really strong performance by Michael Fassbender who remains one of the best actors of his generation. Eventually, you don't really get to know the other characters but you certainly get an interesting glimpse on Steve Jobs who might have been anything from a genius, a rock-star, a philosopher, a tyrant and a sociopath. To conclude, I thought it was a really strong and original biopic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you're interested by this subject.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 23 June 2016 09:26 (A review of The Doom Generation)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing. I think one of my friends at the time suggested to me to watch it. Anyway, it was the first time I saw a movie directed by Gregg Araki and I was definitely impressed. Indeed, I really liked his directing style and this movie definitely had a very interesting dark mood.Ā  I also really enjoyed these ambiguous and rather messed-up characters and it was pretty neat to discover a very young Rose McGowan (by the way, it is such a shame that her career turned out to be rather disappointing after all). So, the whole thing was definitely something original and it really had some potential but it didnā€™t completely work out, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, at the end of the day, the weirdness which was rather fascinating at first slowly started to annoy me and it felt rather gimmick and even slightly pretentious. Still, to conclude, even though it didnā€™t completely convince me, it was a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Gregg Arakiā€™s work.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 22 June 2016 10:00 (A review of Gremlins 2: The New Batch)

Earlier this year, I already saw the first installment so I thought I might just as well re-watch this sequel. I'm well aware of the fact that this movie has a rather lame reputation but I always had a weak spot for the damned thing and it is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. Anyway, I don't really get the hate towards this movie as I think that it was actually a decent follow-up. Basically, they kept the same concept but that's a little bit the problem with these creatures, what else can you do with them? In fact, you could say exactly the same thing about the Alien franchise. Anyway, even though the plot was really similar, they slightly changed the tone making it more a comedy this time and, as result, it really stood out from its predecessor which was probably the reason it didnā€™t get much love but I think it was a good idea. Anyway, in the process, Ā you get to see a lot of daft versions of these Gremlins, a lot of pop references and even some thoughts about the fact that the whole concept was actually rather silly. Sure, I'll have to admit it, it was all rather random but I still think it is quite entertaining and I would go as far as saying that it is actually rather underrated.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 22 June 2016 01:23 (A review of Down with Love)

If I recall it correctly, for some reasons, I actually saw this movie with my wife in the movie theater when it was released. To be honest, it was a rather odd choice since it seemed to rather cheesy but, I have to admit it, I always had a weak spot for romantic-comedies and I probably thought that it would be some decent material for a romantic date. Anyway, the whole thing was basically some kind of homage to the fluffy comedies made in the 1950s and early 1960s, especially the ones starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Anyway, even though RenĆ©e Zellweger and Ewan McGregor seemed to have a lot of fun with this material and even though they were both quite charming, I really had a hard time to care about the damned thing. Concerning the actors involved, more than 10 years later, Ewan McGregor is still one of the most interesting actors at work but even though RenĆ©e Zellweger was at the time a much bigger star than McGregor was, we donā€™t hear much from her anymore. Anyway, to conclude, even though this movie was nothing really amazing, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 22 June 2016 09:41 (A review of Dressed to Kill)

I already saw this movie but since it was such a long time ago, I was really eager to check it out again. Basically, it was some kind of homage to Alfred Hitchcockā€™s work, and even though Hitchcock himself was apparently not impressed, I think the damned thing was actually pretty neat. Indeed, I especially loved the first act focusing on Angie Dickison and, in my opinion, it was in fact some of the best work ever delivered by Brian De Palma, no less than that. Of course, you might argue that it was rather sleazy and exploitative but I thought that it was just spellbinding to behold and Angie Dickinson was quite fascinating. Obviously as a homage to 'Psycho', De Palma got rid off her at the beginning which was a really bold move and, to be honest, the rest of the movie turned out to be decent enough but not much more than that, I'm afraid. At least, Nancy Allen did play a convincing escort-girl but her character never became really interesting, at least, not as much as Dickinson's character was. To make things worse, the first victim's son was even less compelling to behold and the way he joined forces with this escort-girl was rather preposterous.Ā  Anyway, to conclude, even though it was not flawless, it was still a really entertaining erotic thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Brian De Palmaā€™s work.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 8 months ago on 21 June 2016 09:40 (A review of The Wind Rises)

To be honest, even though I have seen all the movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki, I'm afraid I have never been a really huge fan of his work. Still, he remains a really interesting director so I was really eager to check his last (and probably final) directing effort. Well, first of all, as usual, the animation was just mind-blowing. Indeed, it was really gorgeous to look at, proving that there is still some value in the lost art of the hand-drawn animation. Concerning the story, I was expecting some monsters, ghosts and fairies to show up at every corner but, this time, Ā Miyazaki decided to deliver a realistic period piece which was a welcome surprise. To be honest, I'm not sure I really cared about this tale though. I mean, it was cute and charming, even really romantic and poetic at some point, but it never really grabbed me, I'm afraid. Above all, the main issue I had was probably the fact that the main character was just so nice, smart and gentle (same thing with his fiancee). It is definitely a trademark in Miyazaki's but, I don't know, maybe I'm just too cynical, but I miss some conflict, some dark layers in his characters and, as a result, I find them rather dull. Still, even though it didnā€™t completely blow me away, it was still a really nice animated feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Hayao Miyazaki's work.
