An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 17 July 2016 05:59 (A review of Liza, a rĂłkatĂŒndĂ©r)

Once again, after 'Borgman' and 'The Lobster', Ria went for another really absurd black comedy but I think, this time,  she really outdid herself. Indeed, it was so weird, I'm afraid I never really managed to get a grip on the damned thing. I mean, first of all, even though it was taking place in Hungary, there were many references to the Japanese culture and this mix of 2 really foreign cultures was sometimes hard to swallow. For example,  sometimes, I wasn't even sure if the main character was actually speaking Hungarian or Japanese because she basically used the very same accent for both languages. It doesn't mean that it wasn't a funny, in the contrary, I really enjoyed  every time we got to see this Japanese crooner doing his whacky little songs. Eventually, for me, the best way to summarise this movie where those scenes with an old police officer trying to tell a proverb but he never manages to end it up and instead says 'shit...'. Sure, it was funny but it didn't fly very high. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn't really convince me, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 17 July 2016 07:00 (A review of Farewell My Queen)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have been become lately fascinated by Léa Seydoux, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I ended up with some mixed feelings towards the damned thing. Indeed, on one hand, it was sometimes pretty much a spellbinding thriller dealing with the fall of the French monarchy from a very specific point of view, the point of view of one of the Queen's servants. On the other hand, I didn't care much about this (apparently) platonic lesbian love triangle involving this servant, the Queen and a duchess who might have been the Queen's lover. By the way, it was really neat to see again Virginie Ledoyen after all these years but even though she was still gorgeous, I'm afraid she might have been slightly too old to play this part. Anyway, almost half of the movie was about the fact that his servant was pretty much in love with her master but since Marie Antoinette, at least in this movie, seemed to be so shallow, completely out of touch with the rest of the world, and, frankly, rather boring, it was rather difficult to understand why the main character would love her so much. Still, there was something quite fascinating to see the fall of this decadent time from within Versailles. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A bad movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 16 July 2016 04:37 (A review of Date Movie)

Obviously, I didn't expect much from this flick but since it was on Netlfix, I thought I might as well check it out. Wow, it really deserves its poor reputation and it turned out to be much worse than I anticipated. I mean, I never cared for the parody genre to start with but this must be the very worst one I have seen (on the other hand, those guys Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg made a a whole bunch of these spoofs and they could be even worse). Why should I start? There was not one funny joke at all and, to watch this movie 10 years later, it makes the whole thing also dated and even more cringe-inducing to behold. The other thing that bothered me is that instead of focusing on the romantic-comedies, they keep throwing some references to some other movies coming from very various genres and, as a result, it all felt totally random and even less effective. Concerning Alyson Hannigan, she must have thought that this leading part would finally launch her career on the silver screen but this movie did exactly the opposite, it pretty much destroyed her career and we wouldn't see her in the movie theater for many years after that. Fortunately, she also started at the time to work on  'How I Met Your Mother'  which was quite succesfull, otherwise, her career would have been pretty much finished. To conclude, coming back to our main feature, it was pretty bad and you should pretty much avoid it.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 16 July 2016 06:43 (A review of Why Did I Get Married Too?)

Since this movie had some rather low ratings (like pretty much all the movies directed by Tyler Perry), I had some rather low expectations but since I was actually positively surprised by the first installment, I thought I might as well check this sequel too. Well, even though it was a slight step down from its predecessor, I thought it was not so bad after all. First of all, I have to point out that the massive cleavage displayed by Janet Jackson during the first half was a major distraction, maybe a welcome one but still. Furthermore, in the beginning, I was so annoyed by Angela's character who was more cringe-inducing than entertaining and the way Mike was brought back in the mix felt like a missed opportunity. Indeed, it would have been much more interesting if he would have acted exactly the opposite, he should have been friendly to Sheila and Troy, so that Sheila might wonder if she did make the right choice. Fortunately, after you get to hear that Patricia and Gavin were divorcing, the whole thing did start to take off and I thought it was fairly well handled. However, this conflict was solved with one of the most unconvincing death scenes I have ever seen. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was not as bad as I expected, it was still pretty weak though and I don't think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 15 July 2016 08:13 (A review of The Sugarland Express)

Even though this movie is rather obscure, since it was directed by Steven Spielberg, I was still quite eager to check it out. Indeed, even though 'Duel' is nowadays considered as Spielberg's directing debut,  this movie was in fact his official first theatrical feature film. Anyway, even though 'Duel' was a pretty cool flick, I thought this one was rather disappointing, to be honest. First of all, it all depends where you stand concerning Goldie Hawn. Basically, she played here the same character she has portrayed in most of her movies, her typical hysterical whining rather annoying chick, so if you have a weak spot for her gimmick, you will probably enjoy this movie for than I did, otherwise, it might not work for you. For Spielberg, I think it was a rather interesting attempt to deliver a dark comedy but it wasn't nearly dark enough to make it really entertaining, at least, as far as I’m concerned. To conclude, it is one of the most obscure movies directed by this director and even though it is not really a must see in my book, I thought it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Steven Spielberg’s work.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 14 July 2016 08:53 (A review of 8 Mile)

Like any other pop-star, Eminem tried to be an actor at some point but, even though most of this movies turn out to be usually pretty terrible (see ‘Crossroads’, ‘Glitter’,  ‘Burlesque’, ‘The Bodyguard’ or  ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin'), this movie turned out to be actually pretty good. Sure, you might argue that Eminem had to play someone so similar to him that he didn’t really had to act at all and just be himself which would be true. However, I think it was a smart choice because Eminem, just like Britney Spears or Mariah Carey, is not an actor so, to minimize the risks, I understand that he would choose such a part. Furthermore, even though this tale was rather straightforward and generic, I thought it was fairly entertaining and I really enjoyed the gritty approach. For Curtis Hanson, after ‘L.A. Confidential’ and ‘Wonder Boys’, it was another critical success but we don’t hear much from him anymore and he seems nowadays to be retired due to Alzheimer disease. Coming back to our main feature, to conclude, even though it was nothing really groundbreaking, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are a fan of Eminem’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 13 July 2016 01:05 (A review of Hard Boiled (1992))

When I was a teenager, I had the opportunity to see ‘The Killer’ in the movie theater and since it was such a big classic, I had some huge expectations but, to be honest, it turned out to be a massive disappointment, probably one of the most disappointing movies I have ever seen. With this in mind, I had some rather mixed feelings before watching this other ‘classic’ from John Woo starring Chow Yun-Fat but, eventually, I thought it was not bad at all, at least, much more entertaining than ‘The Killer’. I don’t know, maybe I just got used to Woo’s over-the-top directing style but I thought that the action scenes were pretty awesome (the scene at the end when Chow Yun-Fat shoots all those guys while carrying a baby was especially pretty insane). Furthermore, something that really bothered me with ‘The Killer’ is how pretentious the whole thing was and, fortunately, it wasn’t the case at all with this movie. Indeed, it is pretty much a bad-ass action flick, no more, no less. To conclude, even though I don’t think it was really a masterpiece, the plot was just too preposterous for me, it was still a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 13 July 2016 08:39 (A review of No Man's Land)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick but, if I recall it correctly, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Eventually, I though it was a really solid movie about the war in former Yugoslavia but even though most of it worked really well, it was still missing something to become really remarkable in my opinion. I don’t know, at the end of the day, even though it was a definitely a good solid mix between comedy and drama, the concept was still too gimmicky to really blow me away. I mean, sure, it seemed to be a fairly accurate depiction of war and how absurd it can become but I didn’t think it was really groundbreaking. Concerning Danis Tanovic, even though many had some great expectations for this director, none of his following director efforts managed to reach the same critical success. For example, I saw recently ‘Triage’ which had a very sold international cast and definitely some potential but it turned out to be rather half-baked after all. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though I think it is slightly overrated, it was still a pretty good comedy-drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 12 July 2016 09:18 (A review of Roger & Me)

Nowadays, we don’t hear much from Michael Moore but there was some point that the guy was easily the most successful documentary maker in the world. I have always been a huge fan of his work but, at some point, his success was becoming so huge that Moore himself started to become some kind of pop-star and I’m afraid there was too much focus put on him than on his actual work. With this in mind, it was pretty cool to watch this directing debut. Indeed, back then, nobody knew who the hell was this guy and it was just really efficient and very often hilarious to see him confront some corporate figures about their wrongdoings. From the very start, Michael Moore was criticized for manipulating what was on the screen but that’s something that happens in every single documentary so it has never bothered me. The strongest message of this movie, beside the fact that it might be manipulated or not, is that even though most of these huge US corporations make some profits, they still choose to fire all this people just to make an even bigger profit which shows how our world is working nowadays. To conclude, even though it might not be Michael Moore’s best movie, I really enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 11 July 2016 02:48 (A review of The Divorce)

Nowadays, James Ivory seems to be pretty much retired but, on the other hand, the guy is almost 90 years old so it is hardly surprising. Anyway, since this movie had some really low ratings (according to Imdb, it is one of Ivory’s worst directing efforts) , I had some rather low expectations but since I was in the mood in watching a fluffy romantic-comedy starring the lovely Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I thought it was not so bad after all. Indeed, usually, I really don’t like such romantic-comedies trying to make a fun of the differences between the French and American cultures because they are so stereotypical and usually seriously ignorant about the French culture (‘French Kiss’ is probably the worst in this genre) but I thought that this movie handled the subject fairly well. Sure, there were just too many characters involved and most of the plot was seriously convoluted but I thought it was still a decent watch. Anyway, to conclude, I have to admit it, I may have been slightly generous with my rating here but I think it is actually worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
