An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 19 May 2016 11:55 (A review of Erin Brockovich)

I already saw this movie but since it was such a long time ago, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, I always had a weak spot for Steven Soderbergh and, back then, he was pretty much at the top of his game but, to be honest, I wasn’t really blown away by this flick though. I mean, sure, it was well made, the story was fairly entertaining but it was not much more than that, I’m afraid. Concerning Julia Roberts, she did deliver a solid performance, probably one of the best in her career but, to be honest, it doesn’t mean much. In my opinion, the whole thing is pretty much a commercial flick pretending to be an indie production. And, eventually, what are we supposed to be think about Erin Brockovich? On one hand, her ex-husbands were some douchebags but the only guy she was involved with in this movie was pretty amazing. Furthermore, you get to see her reading some papers very intensely during numerous scenes which must be a proof of her investigative skills and her other skills were apparently that she could remember 100s of phone numbers or that she could seduce any man with her boobs (she actually literally says so). Well, I wasn’t really impressed and to see Julia Roberts with some major cleavage and swearing a lot still didn’t qualify as a great performance, at least, not in my book. The very same year , Soderbergh would also release ‘Traffic’ and it was miles better in my opinion. Anyway, to conclude, even though I think it is rather overrated, I have to admit it, it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you have a weak spot for Julia Roberts.

A very good movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 18 May 2016 09:12 (A review of Sicario)

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this movie, I was really eager to check it out. On top of that, I have enjoyed all the movies directed by Denis Villeneuve that I have seen so far, so I had some rather high expectations concerning this movie. Well, eventually, even though I thought it was really good, I have to admit that it didn't completely blow me away though. I mean, it was definitely a strong production, no doubt it, with a great cast, a very solid directing and one of the best stories about the war on drugs I have seen for a very long time. While watching this, somehow, I couldn't stop thinking about all the people going on holidays in Mexico. I mean, how could you go there to have some fun when you are aware of all the atrocities going on in this country? So, it was definitely some strong and dark material and, yet, something bothered me about the damned thing though. Basically, you are pretty much like Emily Blunt's character, they keep you in the dark during the whole thing and, as a result, the plot was sometimes rather murky, I'm not sure if I was really able to follow everything and now that I have seen the damned thing, I'm not sure that everything really made sense. Anyway, even though it wasn’t a complete home-run, it was not far from it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 18 May 2016 02:41 (A review of Falling Down)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely check it out again at some point. If I recall it correctly, I even saw the damned thing when it was released in the movie theater at the time. Anyway, ever since the ‘Batman & Robin’ debacle, Joel Schumacher always had a rather lousy reputation and even though he might deserve this, he still made a couple of decent movies and this movie might be the best of the whole bunch. Indeed, it is pretty much a spellbinding thriller and what made it really interesting was the fact that it was so realistic. On top of that, Michael Douglas was just pitch-perfect here and, according to himself, he gave here the best performance of his career. Eventually, even though I was really impressed by the damned thing, I’m afraid it was still missing something to become truly remarkable. Basically, most of the movies delivered by Schumacher have been seriously shallow and even though this one was more advanced concerning the development of its character and its concept, it  was still not digging enough, I’m afraid. To conclude, even though it was maybe not perfect, I thought it was still a really good thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 18 May 2016 08:55 (A review of Business Is Business)

In 2016, Paul Verhoeven will finally make a come-back with the only 2nd movie he managed to make during the last 16 years and it will be a French steamy thriller which sounds quite promising. Anyway, I have been following the Dutch master for many years and since I always had a weak spot for his work, I was quite eager to check his directorial debut. Well, to honest, even though it was not bad, I thought this movie was actually fairly disappointing. In fact, Verhoeven himself was not really excited about this project and he wanted to make instead an adaptation of a major Dutch literary work but it was his longtime partner Gerard Soeteman, the writer on his movie, who convinced him to first direct this one which was slightly less ambitious. Eventually, since this movie was a success, they were able to make together ‘Turks Fruit’, a massive box-office hit in the Netherlands and arguably the best Dutch movie ever produced. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I mean, it was still a decent watch but I didn't care much about the story or the characters involved. Still, in spite of its flaws, if you are interested in Verhoeven's work, it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 17 May 2016 09:54 (A review of Fury)

First of all, it's rather amazing that, after 70 years, they don't have exhausted yet the subject and they still can make such movies about WWII. Indeed, even though it wasn’t really original, it was really solid, it wasn't missing much to be really amazing and, in my opinion, it might be actually better than 'Inglourious Basterds', the other WWII feature starring Brad Pitt killing a lot of nazis. Basically, what I enjoyed the most is how raw and dark the war was depicted. Indeed, it was pretty much hell and you can see that, within one single day, their youngest recruit would be probably traumatized for the rest of his life. Furthermore, the cast was really good and I was especially impressed by Shia LaBeouf, one of the actors with the lousiest reputation nowadays, as he was able to give so much emotion such by staring at someone. Eventually, what really prevented this movie to completely work for me was the fact that, during the last act, it became a badass action-packed war feature which wasn't really a bad thing but I preferred when they were focusing more on the psychological impact of this horror. Also, the other thing that slightly bothered was the fact that David Ayer made pretty much the same mistake he made in 'Training Day' which was to introduce someone new to this world and, within a day, to make him experience too many thing. At least, it did work better here than in 'Training Day' which I always found ridiculous because of that ridiculously tight time frame.  Anyway, to conclude, even if it was maybe not a masterpiece, it was still one of the best WWII features I have seen for a very long time and it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 17 May 2016 10:29 (A review of The Postman)

I remember very well when this movie was released, it was a huge critical success and, therefore, I was really eager to check it out. I even saw  the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released if I recall it correctly. Well, eventually, even though it was a decent watch, to be honest, I actually had a hard time to really care about the whole thing. I don’t know, maybe I was too young at the time to really appreciate it but it just didn’t really impress me. In fact, I do have a weak spot for romantic features but I thought that this one was so cute, so sentimental, it was actually definitely hard to swallow, at least, in my case. It’s like the characters, the postman, the woman he loves, and Pablo Neruda, they were all very sweet and kind but they all seem so flawless and, therefore, a little bit shallow and boring. Concerning Michael Radford, 4 years later, he would come back with the really obscure ‘B. Monkey’ which would be a massive step-down from this flick. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was slightly disappointing, I still think it is worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 16 May 2016 02:02 (A review of Morrison krijgt een zusje)

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Bracha van Doesburgh, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, I really had a hard time to care about the damned thing and the only redeeming feature in fact was that the running time was really short (barely 70 mins). Indeed, even though my wife is convinced that those Dutch family productions are really cute, I think that they are usually boring and bordeline cringe-inducing to behold. Coming back to our main feature, it was probably not the worst one I have seen in this genre but it was certainly the best either, that’s for sure. Basically, it was all about a young boy struggling with the fact that he will get soon a baby sister but even though this idea definitely had some potential, it was just so poorly developed. I mean, if your best idea is to have this young kid driving a car not once but several times in the movie, you should know you're in trouble. Furthermore, the characters were just completely underwhelming. To conclude, I don't think it is worth a look, even if you want to watch something with your young kids, you should definitely pick something else.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 15 May 2016 03:20 (A review of Moonwalker)

I remember actually quite well the fist time I saw this movie. Indeed,  I basically bumped into it while it was on TV. Back then,  I was just a kid and I especially enjoyed at the time the sequence with the bunny in claymation. Anyway, almost 30 years later, this segment is still pretty neat but, to be honest, this movie is actually quite  a mess. Indeed, it is a rather odd combination of concert footage, documentary bits, some longer version of the 'Bad' album video-clips and a (rather weak) fantasy fiction around 'Smooth Criminal'. I know that Michael Jackson also wished to be an actor and that's probably the closest he ever got but, man, this movie was just a massive egotrip. Still, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch. I mean, if you can't stand Michael Jackson's music, this movie would be then completely boring to you but, if you, like me and so many others in the world, have a weak spot for his work, then, it is definitely worth a look. For example, even though the narrative aspect of the 'Smooth Criminal' segment was seriously weak, it is just a great song and the dancing was also just amazing. To conclude, if you manage to put aside how poorly put together the whole thing is, I think it is actually worth a look, especially if you're interested in Michael Jackson's work.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 14 May 2016 06:55 (A review of R.I.P.D.)

Obviously, like anyone else, I heard only bad things about this movie but since I have a weak spot for Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be indeed pretty lame. Basically, it was some kind of seriously misguided mix between 'Men In Black', 'Ghostbusters', even with a dash of 'Ghost'. So, it felt really derivative and, right from the start, the whole concept was just seriously boring. For Ryan Reynolds, it was yet already his 4th comic-book adaptation which turned out to be either a commercial and/or a critical flop (see also 'Blade: Trinity', 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', and 'Green Lantern') and he even made a 5th movie in this genre but, fortunately for him, 'Deadpool'  was a huge hit (he also said he would never play another comic-book character, except for Deadpool). Concerning Jeff Bridges, is it me or is he playing all his characters with the very same accent nowadays? Anyway, Bridges did manage from time to time to have a nice oneliner but it is pretty much the only positive thing I can tell about this movie. To conclude, even though I have seen worse, I still think I have been generous with my rating here and the whole thing was still pretty much a waste of time.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 13 May 2016 03:38 (A review of Fahrenheit 451 (1966))

To be honest, even though I have heard about this very famous book, I have actually never read it and the main reason I wanted to check this movie was above all because it was directed by François Truffaut, one of the greatest French directors ever. This movie was a huge step for Truffaut as it would be his first (and only) English speaking production. On top of that, he was working with the lovely and very talented Julie Christie which made the whole thing even more intriguing. Eventually, the whole thing was not bad at all but it didn't turn out be one of Truffaut’s best movies, I’m afraid. First of all, he admitted himself that he never really cared about science-fiction as a genre so you might wonder if he was really the best director for this material. Furthermore, he barely mastered the English language when it started to shoot the damned thing and you could feel this while watching the movie. Still, it remains quite a fascinating story, that’s for sure. Surprisingly, this story has never been remade but it should certainly happen at some point. To conclude, even though it didn’t really blow me away, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in François Truffaut’s work.
