An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 19 January 2016 11:19 (A review of The Horse Whisperer)

I already saw this movie but it was ages ago and, above all, I just finished reading the book so I thought I might as well check it out again. In fact, I have to admit it, it is not really the kind of stories that would at first really attract me. However it was the very first time that Robert Redford directed and appeared on screen which made the whole thing slightly more intriguing to me. Eventually, it turned out to be pretty successful at the box-office and it was probably the most popular movie he has directed. Well, personally, I actually ended up with some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, on one hand, there was a very strong cast involved (Robert Redford, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sam Neill, Dianne Wiest, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Cooper, Kate Bosworth) and Redford definitely managed to create a really nice mood. However, on the other hand, I’m not sure if I really cared about this story. In fact, a big difference between the book and the film adaptation was that the love story between Tom Booker and Annie MacLean was unconsummated in the movie but it was definitely not the case in the book. The end-result was therefore much more realistic but also much less passionate as well. Another issue, this time in both versions, was that it was never convincing that Tom would fall so much in love with Annie. I don’t blame Kristin Scott Thomas, she was as usual terribly charismatic but her character, especially in the movie version, was for too long such a bossy stressed out and arrogant woman. As a result, you wonder why such a laidback guy like Tom Booker would ever be so fascinated by her. Finally, the issue with this story was that it started out as the very intriguing healing of a traumatized horse and a traumatized girl by a wise horseman but it got completely undermined by this sappy and rather unconvincing love story. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 18 January 2016 02:06 (A review of Honkytonk Man)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick. Anyway, one of the main reasons that motivated Clint Eastwood to become a director in the first place is that there were some stories in which he really wanted to get involved but nobody would think of him since the studios would rather cast him only for another Western or some other action flicks where Eastwood would portray his usual no-nonsense tough guy. This way, by becoming a director, he was able to pick up some different projects, more intimate, showing a different facet of his talent. This movie is a perfect example. To be honest, it is not actually one of this best dramas but I thought it was pretty solid. Indeed, Eastwood gives a nice performance, like his son by the way, and I really enjoyed the sad and melancholic tone of the whole thing. The very same year, Clint Eastwood made also ‘Firefox’ which turned out to be a box-office hit, while this movie was a flop. Well, in my opinion, ‘Firefox’ was just  terrible while this movie was not bad at all. Anyway, to conclude, it won’t go down as one of Eastwood’s masterpieces but it is actually a decent watch.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 18 January 2016 12:39 (A review of Hollywood Ending)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick. In fact, if I recall it correctly, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Indeed, after I saw ‘Manhattan Murder Mystery’, I became a huge fan  of Woody Allen and I went to see every year his latest directing effort in the movie theater and I think this one would be the very last one I saw this way. Basically, at some point, it became a rather thankless job to watch his movies like this. Indeed, every since he started, Woody Allen has been making one movie every single year and, even though you might be impressed with this work ethic, I think it had quite a negative impact on the quality of his work and this movie is a perfect example.  Indeed, it was made during the period often considered as his weakest one, a period which stopped either with ‘Melinda and Melinda’ or ‘Match Point’ and it wasn’t really good, I’m afraid. I mean, even though the concept had some potential, especially with Woody Allen playing a movie director, the whole sickness angle was pretty weak.  To conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was a decent watch though and I think it is worth  a look but it is definitely one of the weakest movies delivered by the great master.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 17 January 2016 10:01 (A review of Into the Woods)

Before this movie was released, there was a pretty good buzz about it mostly because of the stellar cast involved. Eventually, it didn't get much love after all but I was still eager to check it out. Well, even though it was an interesting concept to mix all these fairy tales together, it didn’t make up for a really satisfying story. On top of that, even though at some point, all these little stories seemed to be neatly  concluded, it still went on for another 30 minutes which were even more underwhelming and rather unnecessary. Finally,  another disappointment was the fact that, even though Johnny Depp was prominently displayed in all the promotional material, he actually showed up just for 2 scenes only. So, all in all, I didn't care much for the whole thing but I have to admit it, it was rather well made and there was indeed a very nice cast ( Meryl Streep,  Emily Blunt,  Anna Kendrick, Chris  Pine, Johnny Depp). As usual, Meryl Streep was the best and she pretty much out-staged anyone else involved. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent musical and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 17 January 2016 06:33 (A review of Homeboy)

Since it is a rather obscure feature, I had some rather low expectations but since I have a weak spot for Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken, I thought I might as well check it out. On top of that, I had this movie on DVD for ages so it was really time to watch the damned thing. I learned afterwards it was in fact the first movie written by Rourke and, unsurprisingly, it was dealing with boxing, one of his big passions. Indeed, when he was young, he had been pretty good as an amateur and he would make a come-back 3 years after this movie (many believe that this choice would ruin his career as an actor and, at least, you can't argue that his face was pretty much destroyed afterwards). So, with this kind of experience, you would expect him to write a solid boxing story but it wasn't really the case, I'm afraid. Indeed, even though it was pretty obvious where Rourke was getting with this tale (it was in fact really similar to 'The Wrestler', one of his greatest critical hits), the way to get there was just way too convoluted and hardly entertaining. On top of that, even though Christopher Walken was awesome as usual, his character was rather poorly developed and I think he could have been removed entirely from this movie. Anyway, to conclude, it was pretty weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 16 January 2016 03:20 (A review of Hercules)

If I'm not mistaken, I think I saw this movie in the movie theater when it was released. Anyway, even though it is definitely not one of the greatest classics delivered by Disney, I have to admit that I always had a weak spot for the damned thing. Basically, it is one of these Disney animated features dealing with a very old tale and they gave it a comedic twist but, in this genre, I have seen much better (in my opinion, the best one is by far 'The Emperor's New Groove'  which is easily their most underrated feature). Indeed, in my opinion, the Gospel songs didn't mix at all with the Greek theme, in fact, none of the songs did appeal to me. Furthermore, in spite of focusing on Hercules's Labors which would have made for a great adventure, they focused on something quite similar but not really thrilling. And yet, I still liked the damned thing. Indeed, first of all, Megara was easily one of the most interesting female characters ever created by those guys but, above all, I just loved Hades. Indeed, James Woods was just pitch-perfect and this character is simply one of the very best Disney villains ever made. At least, he must be the most hilarious one. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I think it is actually a fun watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 2 months ago on 15 January 2016 02:57 (A review of Home for the Holidays)

I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago, I was quite eager to check it out again. Back in 2011, Jodie Foster finally made a come-back with ‘The Beaver’ and even though didn’t get much love when it was released, I thought it was a decent watch and it is rather surprising that it took her so long to finally come up with a new directing effort. Indeed, back in 1991, she made her directing debut with ‘Little Man Tate’ which was very well received and, a few years later, she came up with this 2nd feature. In fact, if I recall it correctly, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Anyway, basically, it was a rather typical comedy about a family reunion and they managed to create some interesting characters who were rather quirky but still fairly recognizable. And, yet, somehow, I can’t say I was really impressed by the whole thing. The main issue, I guess, was that Foster never managed to make up her mind if the whole thing should be realistic or not and, as a result, it was sometimes seriously over-the-top. A good example would be Robert Downey Jr. . Indeed, even though he gave another solid performance, his character was sometimes so excessive and borderline cringe-inducing, which wasn't helped by the fact that Downey was heavily using drugs back in those days. So, the movie was constantly and awkwardly swinging between some strong realistic scenes and some much less compelling crazy weird moments. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Jodie Foster’s work.

A bad movie

Posted : 9 years, 2 months ago on 15 January 2016 09:30 (A review of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues)

It is another movie I really wanted to watch for at least a decade, probably even longer. After waiting for so long , I wish I could say it was worth the wait but the whole thing was just terrible. In fact, I have to admit that I remember quite well when it was released and that it was really trashed by the critics. Anyway, basically, the whole thing was some kind of weird supposedly quirky indie comedy but it was never entertaining or intriguing to watch. Obviously, it was filled up with some rather weird characters but none of them had something really interesting to tell. I mean, right from the start, the concept of this girl with some huge thumbs going hitchhiking for years was seriously misguided and completely underwhelming. At least, back in those days, Uma Thurman really looked quite stunning and she was probably one of the most promising actresses at work at the time but this movie would be one of the first really bad move she made, something that would keep occurring in her career time and time again (see also ‘Batman & Robin’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend’, ‘The Accidental Husband’, …). Anyway, to conclude, it was pretty bad, easily the worst movie ever directed by Gus Van Sant and I don’t think it is worth a look at all.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 2 months ago on 14 January 2016 03:55 (A review of 8 Women)

Following ‘Sous le sable’, François Ozon’s first critical success, the French director came up with this flick which was definitely bigger and more ambitious than his previous projects. Indeed, for this movie, Ozon managed to have an impressive all-star cast with some of the most famous French actresses (Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Fanny Ardant, Emmanuelle Béart, Ludivine Sagnier, Virginie Ledoyen, Danielle Darrieux). Well, eventually, even though it was a decent watch and it was indeed pretty neat to see all these great actresses working together, I can’t say it really blew me away. Basically, the main issue I had is that even though the available acting talent was quite amazing, the material was terribly light and, therefore, it slightly felt like  a missed opportunity. Of course, you might argue that Steven Soderbergh basically did the same thing with ‘Ocean’s eleven’ and you would be right but ‘Ocean’s eleven’ was in fact just another blockbuster, without any pretension, and I thought it was just more fun than this flick. To conclude,  even though I didn’t really connect with the whole thing, it was still not bad at all and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

A bad movie

Posted : 9 years, 2 months ago on 14 January 2016 09:43 (A review of Crimewave)

At last, I finally saw the damned thing. Seriously, it took me a while to finally get my hands on this flick, at least 5 years, maybe even a whole decade, and I wish I could say it was worth the wait. I mean, I have been warned by quite a lot of people that the whole thing was really worthless but since it was the last movie directed by Sam Raimi that I hadn’t seen yet, I was still eager to check it out. I mean, a movie directed by Sam Raimi and written by the Coen brothers did sound amazing on paper but the end-result was just awful and, unsurprisingly, Raimi has disowned the whole thing. Basically, it was some kind of weird manic black comedy but it was never funny or entertaining at any moment, in fact, it was rather even seriously annoying to watch. I mean, seriously, it is one of those movies that provides a cartoon noise each time there is a lame joke which is probably one of the most useless gimmicks ever used in a film. Anyway, to conclude, it was really bad and I don’t think it is worth a look, only maybe if you are a die-hard fan of Sam Raimi’s work and you absolutely need to watch all his movies.
