(A review of
Creed)
Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was quite eager to check it out. Ā On top of that, my wife has always been a fan of this franchise so we watched it together which was pretty neat. Eventually, to be honest, I actually ended up with some mixed feelings about the damned thing.Ā I mean, sure, it was a decent Rocky installment, absolutely, but thatās exactly what it was, a decent movie and not much more than that, Iām afraid. Seriously, while watching this flick, I was really not able to see what was supposedly so deep about the damned thing and, in my opinion, it pretty much followed the very same formula already provided almost 40 years ago by the very first installment without adding anything really new. Ā Still, I have to admit it, I had a good time watching this flick. Indeed, even though it was nothing really groundbreaking, it was still quite entertaining, thanks to some pretty good performances by Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan and some solid directing by Ryan Coogler. Anyway, to conclude, even though I thought it was slightly disappointing, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
Hannah and Her Sisters)
For some reasons, even though I have been following Woody Allenās work for several decades now, I have never been a huge fan of this movie. I mean, the first time I saw it, I was much younger and maybe I wasnāt able to really appreciate it but, eventually, after all these years, I have to admit that there is no doubt that it was actually better than anything Allen has done during the last 20 years. Anyway, when it was released, it was definitely a big success and, with a box office gross of over $40 million, it was Woody Allen's most financially successful film until āMatch Pointā was released almost 20 years later. I donāt know, in my case, even though there was a stellar cast involved (Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, Carrie Fisher, Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest, Max von Sydow, Woody Allen) and the story itself was fairly entertaining, it never really reached the level of such Allenās classics like āManhattanā or āAnnie Hallā. To conclude, even though I wasnāt completely blown away by the whole thing, it is still a really solid drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Woody Allenās work.Ā

(A review of
The Big Blue)
To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely rewatch it at some point. Anyway, when it was released in France, it was actually poorly Ā received by the critics but, eventually, it turned out to be a massive box-office success and it is now considered a French classic. Well, personally, I have actually always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, like all the movies directed by Luc Besson, it was quite ambitious, visually really impressive and the soundtrack provided by Eric Serra was quite mesmerizing as well. And yet, it did kind of rub me in the wrong way. Indeed, like most of the work coming from this director, the whole thing felt rather pretentious to me. I mean, after all these years, I still donāt know what to think of the freediving sport. On one hand, it seems like one of the dullest sports ever conceived but, on the other hand, I have to admit that Besson still managed to deliver something sometimes quite mesmerizing. To conclude, even though Iām not a huge fan, it is still a really interesting movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.Ā

(A review of
Hamlet)
This is another movie I was eager to watch for ages. Seriously, I think it took me about 20 years to finally watch the damned thing. I have to admit that, even though I really wanted to see it after all this time, it was still worried about watching a 4 hour Shakespeare adaptation. Indeed, I managed to watch the huge directorās cut, also shot in 65mm (unfortunately, not on wide theater screen but on my own TV) , it was quite a marathon and, at the end, I have to admit that I was rather exhausted.Ā Still, we should praise Kenneth Branagh for providing the ultimate adaptation of one of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare. Yes, it was the very first time that someone tried to adapt all the text and all the dialogues and even though the idea of getting 4 hours of non-stop Shakespearean dialogues might sound pretty scary, it actually worked very well. Indeed, the whole thing was quite fascinating. On top of that Branagh always had a passion for the genre, he managed to have a top cast here and they all delivered some really strong performances. To conclude, I believe that this movie is mostly for the huge fans of Shakespeareās work but, if even you are not, Ā I still think it is definitely worth a look.Ā

(A review of
True Legend)
Well, it was another movie that I had for quite a while on DVD Ā (I think at least 2 years, maybe even more), so I thought it was really time to watch the damned thing. First of all, I also need to add that I bought it just because someone at the shop pointed out that I could pick up another movie for free and this one seemed to be the least worse of the bunch. Anyway, even Ā though there were some really bad-ass fight scenes, Ā some nice visuals (even though the CGI was often rather pathetic) and a nice mood, the whole thing never managed to really grab my attention. Indeed, Ā during the very beginning, they tell you some historical facts that, in my opinion, had really nothing to do with the actual story. Then, you had a spectacular scene introducing Ā the two main characters but it didnāt fit very well with the mid-section which was by far the best part in this movie. Finally, Ā when it seemed that the movie has reached his natural conclusion, they added a rather lame 3rd act which didnāt have anything to do with anything else that happened before. To conclude, even though the basic ingredients were there, it turned out to be a rather weak feature and I don't think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.Ā

(A review of
Marmaduke)
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching the damned thing. Well, it turned out to be pretty terrible. Indeed, one of the biggest downsides of the current CGI technology is that, nowadays, it is not so difficult anymore to animate any anymal as you like so, as a result, you end with all these movies dealing with talking animals, like 'Garfield', 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua', 'HOP' Ā or ' Yogi Bear'. Well, in this genre, I think this movie might be the worst one I have seen so far. I mean, I have to admit it, I'm not really familiar with the comics it is coming from but it seems that it seems to be even less faithful than 'Garfield' already was. I mean, in the original comics, Marmaduke never talked and that's what he never stopped doing during the whole movie, talking nonsense. A part from that, I won't start to describe the plot which was just really inane, basically it was just really boring and, at least, it was rather short so I didn't waste to much time here. Anyway, to conclude, the whole thing was really misguided from the start, it was pretty bad and I don't think it is worth a look whatsoever.Ā

(A review of
Gremlins)
Even though I had already seen this movie quite often when I was a kid, I was still eager to check it out again and, somehow, I ended up watching it with my little brother who was visiting at the time which was pretty neat. Eventually, after all these years, I still think it is a really nice movie. What I find most impressive about it is that it is one of the very few decent horror movies that they managed to make for the kids. Indeed, even though it is quite fun, there are also some scary elements but those elements are not so frightening that the whole thing would become unwatchable for the younger audience. So, if you are about 12 years old, which is the perfect age to watch this, you will be never sure if you should laugh or be scared and, therefore, this movie managed to reach a really subtle balance. Unfortunately, all the human characters were terribly bland and boring preventing this movie to become really amazing and the soundtrack didn't grow old very well either, I'm afraid. Still, it is rather surprising that they didn't remake this movie yet but it will probably happen at some point with some massive amount of CGI which might be an improvement or maybe a total disaster. Anyway, to conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, it is a childhood classic of mine, I really liked the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
Safety Not Guaranteed)
Following his monster hit with 'Jurassic World', I was rather curious Ā to see Colin Trevorrow's previous movie which was also his directing debut, especially since it was rather well received. Well, first of all, the thing that I really enjoyed about this movie is how difficult, in fact, how impossible it is to really define it. Indeed, it was neither a quirky indie romance, a comedy, Ā a drama, a thriller or some science-fiction and the fact Ā that it never truly belonged specifically to one of these genres made the whole thing quite intriguing. And yet, I'm afraid it didn't really work for me. Indeed, Ā the main issue I had was that none of the characters involved was really fun, entertaining Ā or interesting enough. I have to admit it, Audrey Plaza was really charming and managed to make her character slightly more intriguing than the rest but it was still not enough, I'm afraid. At the end of the day, I had the feeling that I was following 3 social losers who were going after another loser with possibly some major mental issues. As a result, to be honest, the whole thing was in fact almost depressing to watch and I doubt that it was the effect that the makers were looking for. Anyway, to conclude, even though I didnāt really connect with the damned thing, it was still a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look though.Ā

(A review of
Nebraska)
First of all, for some reasons, I actually ended up watching this movie with my father. Indeed, he was just visiting and, from all the movies I proposed to watch, he chose this one, which was pretty neat. Anyway, following 'The Decendants' (which I very much enjoyed), fortunately, it didnāt take Alexander Payne so many years to come up with a new directing effort. In fact, Payne tried to get this movie made for almost a decade and it was only after the critical success of 'The Descendants' that he finally managed to get the necessary support. Anyway, I really enjoyed the damned thing. Indeed, first of all, the black and white cinematography Ā was gorgeous, the soundtrack was really nice and all the actors involved (especially Bruce Dern and June Squibb) delivered some really strong performances. On top of that, some of the dialogues were quite hilarious and I loved the depth that Bruce Dern managed to put in his character. So, there was a lot of good stuff in this movie, definitely, but I'm afraid it was still missing something to really win me over. First of all, I'm not a huge fan of road trips and, on top of that, thatās a gimmick that Payne has overused through the years (see also 'About Schmidt' and 'Sideways') so I had a rather hard time to really care about this tale. Furthermore, even though they tried to make us believe that Will Forte's character was some kind of loser, the guy was just so nice, so patient with his father and actually every one else, that he became slightly boring at some point and I missed in him the complexity and struggle displayed by his father. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I really liked it (my dad as well) and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
Sleeping Beauty)
Even though it might be surprising, from the 3 classic Disney fairy tales ('Snow White', 'Cinderella' and this feature), this movie is actually easily my favorite one. Indeed, the animation is just gorgeous, even after all these years, it has one of the best soundtracks ever delivered by Disney and even the songs worked for me. Obviously, Maleficent was such a great villain, one of their very best, that they would even focus their recent live-action version on her instead of Aurora. Concerning Aurora, she was just quite stunning to look at, easily one of their most beautiful princesses. Eventually, the only thing preventing this movie to become truly amazing was the fact that they didn't take any risks at all. Indeed, they just followed their traditional fairy tale formula and, as a result, all the characters were terribly one-dimensional. Basically, the whole tale is really sweet but it also feels rather childish and, eventually, you never feel that anything is really at stake so it is rather difficult to really care about what's going on. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it is still a timeless and charming animated fairy tale and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā
