A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 20 December 2015 03:06 (A review of Bridget Jones's Diary)

I have to admit it, I alway had a weak spot for this movie and it must be one of the most popular romantic-comedies out there. To be honest, I'm not sure it is actually one of the best movies in this genre but it is definitely a really solid effort and most of it worked like a charm. First of all, this trio composed by Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth was just pitch-perfect, especially Zellweger. Indeed, even though she was really cute, she still looked like someone who could be a co-worker or someone living next to you. Basically, she looked like a normal person and that was so refreshing and definitely the biggest asset in this movie, this fact that she was so relatable. Of course, the fact that the jokes were often quite hilarious also helped as well. Unfortunately, the whole thing was still too cheesy to become really amazing, at least, for me. Indeed, they made sure that Daniel Cleaver was really bad and Mark Darcy was really great which was rather disappointing. Furthermore, all these typical tricks like having him leave to America but still to come back to her after all (they even used this trick twice!) were just too gimmicky. Still, in spite of its flaws, it is definitely an entertaining feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 20 December 2015 12:53 (A review of Split Decisions)

Since it is such an obscure picture (I'm only the 3rd listal member who actually rated it), I had some rather low expectations but since I had this DVD for such a long time (at least 4 years...), I thought it was really time to watched the damned thing. Well, even though I always had a weak spot for Gene Hackman (the only reason why I even considered watching it in the first place), I didn't care much for it, I'm afraid. Indeed, to be honest, even though half of it was not bad, the other half was really some garbage. Take the plot for example, it was pretty much a weak and underwhelming copy of 'Rocky'. Therefore, the whole plot was pretty obvious from the start but the journey to get there was not really interesting or entertaining and the supposedly climactic fight at the end was just terribly underwhelming and rather poorly executed. Still, there were a few things here and there that actually did work. Indeed, I did like to see those 3 generations of boxers and how they interacted together and some of the actors, particularly Gene Hackman and Jeff Fahey, were not bad. To conclude, at the end of the day, the whole thing was pretty weak and I don't think it is worth a look.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 18 December 2015 09:59 (A review of In the Mouth of Madness)

I remember it very well, 20 years ago, for some reasons, I actually saw this flick in the movie theater when it was released. I wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing but, back then, I thought it was quite fascinating to behold. Indeed, I was much younger, around 15 years old, I had never seen anything like this and it had quite an impact on me.Ā  Back then, I wasn’t really familiar with John Carpenter’s work and, in my opinion, it would be his last great movie and everything he would make afterwards would be at best watchable but usually terribly weak. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I just loved the ominous mood created, even if the story didn’t make much sense. I thought it was also a masterstroke to have Sam Neill to play the lead. Indeed, instead of the usual tough guys or psychos that you would get with such movies, they gave us an average guy who was rather cynical but smart enough and during the whole thing, he was basically trying to rationalize what the hell was going on, trying to keep his sh*t together during the process. It was just pretty awesome when you see him completely losing it towards the end. To conclude, I always had a weak spot for this flick and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 17 December 2015 09:11 (A review of Innerspace)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Basically, it is more or less a childhood classic for me and it is definitely a guilty pleasure. Indeed, even though it might seem cheesy nowadays, as a kid, I thought the concept was fascinating, to have this guy becoming so small that he could go into someone else’s body. Eventually, Martin Short would turn out to be one of the most underwhelming and annoying actors out there but, back in those days, I didn’t know the guy and he didn’t bother me at all. In fact, I have to admit that he was actually a decent choice to play the lead character. With Dennis Quaid, they had a pretty good chemistry and they probably made the most unlikely duo I have ever seen resulting in something pretty entertaining. For Joe Dante, behind ā€˜Gremlins’, it must the best movie he made in the 80’s but it has been a while since the guy has released something really interesting which is too bad. To conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, I really have a weak spot for this movie and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 16 December 2015 11:03 (A review of In the Line of Fire (1993))

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. This movie was actually quite a milestone. Indeed, it would be basically the last time that Clint Eastwood would play the lead in the major motion-picture directed by someone else than himself (eventually, almost 20 years later, he would finally work for someone else again for ā€˜Trouble with the Curve’ but it was something rather minor). Back then, Rene Russo was still on the A-list and, together, they had some really good chemistry. Anyway, back to our main feature, it was some perfect material for Eastwood and it is rather difficult to imagine another actor for this part. Concerning John Malkovich, he was maybe not your typical flashy over-the-top psychopath but that made his character ever more compelling to behold. On top of that, even though it might seem to be a fairly standard and generic tale, it was actually rather realistic, at least for this genre, and above all, it was terribly effective. To conclude, even though it was probably not a real masterpiece, it was still a solid and really entertaining thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 16 December 2015 08:28 (A review of Jude)

For 20 years, I have been following Michael Winterbottom’s career. Back then, I saw his directing debut, ā€˜Butterfly Kiss’, in the movie theater when it was released and I was completely blown away. As a result, I eventually ended up watching this movie as well in the movie theater. Eventually, it turned out to be, unfortunately, the first time that this director would slightly disappoint me. Basically, the main issue with this director, in my opinion, is that he is such a workaholic (he has made 23 movies in the last 20 years) that it has a rather negative impact on the general quality of his work. This movie is a perfect example. Indeed, the whole thing definitely had some potential and it was something completely different than his previous directing efforts which was quite interesting. It was also starring a very young Kate Winslet a year before her breakthrough with ā€˜Titanic’. And, yet, the whole thing didn’t really convince me. I guess, it was partly due to the fact that the story was seriously bleak and dreary but the biggest issue is that I never really cared about this tale or the characters involved. To conclude, even though it was slightly disappointing, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 15 December 2015 03:46 (A review of I Stand Alone (1998))

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick. However, Gaspar NoĆ© is one of the few directors that manage to make movies which are quite unforgettable but also really difficult to watch the first time around and they are usually just too unsettling to re-watch. I wonder if I saw this one before or after ā€˜IrrĆ©versible’ but it doesn’t really matter. Indeed, even though it was a directing debut, NoĆ© seemed to really know what he wanted to achieve. Basically, he gave one of the bleakest views on humanity I have ever seen (and I have seen a lot of dark and twisted features…) and it is so dark that becomes rather unpleasant to watch at some point. And, yet, even though you know you are going to feel bad for days just because you watched the damned thing, somehow, it is still quite mesmerizing. That’s something that my wife never really understood, this need to watch something that it is so borderline nauseating. Well, I don’t know, there is indeed some kind of masochism involved, but I believe there is something rather fascinating in exploring our dark side. Anyway, to conclude, even though it is definitely an an acquired taste, I think it is definitely worth a look, at least, if you don’t mind watching something terribly depressing.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 15 December 2015 09:04 (A review of Les MisƩrables)

To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of musicals but since this one was a big success at the box-office, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, to really enjoy this, it all depends where you stand considering this kind of movies. Indeed, if you have a weak spot for the genre, there is a fair chance it will be a masterpiece for you but, if you are like me and don’t care much for it, it might at best be a decent watch but not much than that I’m afraid. I mean, I thought it was visually pretty impressive, especially the opening scene with this boat but, still, it was very long, perhaps too long, and surprisingly, the characters were in fact barely developed in spite of this long running time. It was probably due to the fact that they did 99% of the dialogues in songs, setting the focus on the emotions but not on the characters themselves. On top of that, except for Anne Hathaway (who really deserved her Academy Award) and Hugh Jackman, the rest of the cast didn’t really impress me. The best example was probably with Russell Crowe. I mean, he was really brave to get involved in a musical like this one, his voice was not bad and he was definitely able to sing in tone but I thought he was rather unable to show any kind of emotions and his performance felt rather flat. On the other hand, I must admit that I was really impressed by Hugh Jackman. Indeed, I was aware of the fact that he had a really solid musical career on the stage but the guy simply gave one of his best performances. Ā Indeed, even though he was constantly singing, the range of emotions he displayed was quite impressive. To conclude, even though it didn’t completely work for me, it was still not bad at all and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 14 December 2015 12:52 (A review of Interiors)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Basically, for the last 25 years, I have been closely following Woody Allen’s career and, even though I used to be a die-hard fan, I believe that his work ethic, basically making one movie every single year, has been terribly detrimental for the quality of his work. Anyway, I would advise to avoid his recent work and watch instead what he made in the 70’s or in the 80’s. This movie is a fine example. Indeed, nowadays, it is actually pretty much forgotten but I thought it was actually pretty good. Basically, it was actually his very first attempt at making a drama and I thought it was fairly decent. To be honest, it was cute that Allen tried to emulate his idol Ingmar Berman and it did work but comedy was and still is his genre but this movie was probably one of his best in this genre. To conclude, even though it was probably not a masterpiece, I thought it was not bad at all and it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Woody Allen’s work.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 14 December 2015 11:48 (A review of Indochine)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should re-watch at some point. Anyway, I always wondered if this movie was successful abroad (it did win the Academy Award for the Best Foreign feature at the time) but, in France, it was definitely a massive critical success.Ā  Indeed, it is basically a French classic dealing with a very specific time when France used to be a massive colonial power. Even though France is not a really super-power anymore for a very long time, the French, rather narcissistic, always enjoyed looking back to their glory days, even for something so controversial as when it was an imperialistic nation. As a result, you get a rather ambiguous view on this business in this movie. On one hand, it was all rather rotten, the way the French was dominating the local population, becoming filthy rich in the process but, on the other hand, there was an undeniable deep connection between both countries during that time. Obviously, they had to throw in the mix a rather predictable love story but thanks to the solid performances, it was still fairly entertaining to behold. To conclude, even though I wasn’t completely blown away by the whole thing, it was still a really solid period drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.
