An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 2 December 2015 11:10 (A review of El Cid)

To be honest, I wasn't exactly dying to watch this movie but one of my colleagues actually gave me this DVD so I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, even though it was a decent watch, I can’t say I was really blown away by the whole thing though. Sure, it was a well made and fairly spectacular epic medieval tale but I'm afraid it was just really too slow for my taste. I mean, I don't mind when a movie almost reaches 3 hours, as long as it has something interesting to say, but, in this case, I had a feeling that they were dragging the whole thing out for no good reasons except to make it more epic. Still, Charlton Heston, after playing Ben-Hur, Moses, and fighting some talking apes, was able to portray this time a legendary Spanish knight and the guy certainly delivered the goods once again. Concerning Sophia Loren, to be honest, I have to admit that I'm not really familiar with her work but, even though she did look voluptuous, she didn't really convince me. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn’t really impress me, it was still not bad at all and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 2 December 2015 01:44 (A review of Macbeth)

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I’m a huge fan of Roman Polanski’s work, I was really eager to check it out. Basically, it was another rather obscure movie delivered by this great master and it was apparently barely seen when it was released. Eventually, the most striking thing about  this film was probably the rather distressful circumstances during which it was made. Indeed, Roman Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by Charles Manson just three years before making this film and this was the first movie directed by Polanski following this tragic event. It is believed that due to this traumatic event, Polanski developed the story to be a much more violent representation of Shakespeare's play and, indeed, you probably never see again such a violent adaptation of Shakespeare's work. Eventually, it was a huge flop but I still found it quite interesting, like anything else coming from this director. Indeed, those Shakespeare adaptations can be rather dull but this one, thanks to Polanski's gory vision, became something quite unique, I think it is a really interesting flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 2 December 2015 11:51 (A review of Killing Zoe)

Many people tend to forget it but ‘Pulp Fiction’ was actually co-written by Roger Avary who used to be a very good friend of Quentin Tarantino. Eventually, while Tarantino became one of the most famous directors in the world, Roger Avary managed to direct in total only 2 movies during the last 2 decades  (he did write a few more movies though). Anyway, ever since I heard about this flick, I always wanted to check it out and, eventually, it was one of the first DVDs I ever bought when I got my first DVD player years ago. Eventually, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was a decent watch. Indeed, the story was rather generic but I enjoyed the bleak mood and there was a very nice cast involved (Eric Stoltz, Julie Delpy, Jean-Hugues Anglade). Eventually, it would take almost 10 years for Roger Avary to come up with another directing effort, the even better and terribly underrated ‘The Rules of Attraction’.  Unfortunately, since then, this promising director didn’t make any other movie which is too bad. To conclude, even though it might not have been a masterpiece, I thought it was not bad at all and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

When was the last time that Spike Lee has made something really worthwhile? I guess, it was already 10 years ago with ‘Inside Man’ and all his movies since then have been some critical and commercial failures. It’s too bad because I always had a weak spot for this director. On the other hand, I have to admit that all his early movies were not always some real home-runs and this movie is a perfect example. In fact, it’s not it was really bad, it’s just that it never really fulfilled all its potential and there were many things to enjoyed here. First of all,  it is rather weird to see Wesley Snipes in a serious drama after all these terrible cheap-ass direct-to-dvd action flicks but in fact, the guy actually started his career in such movies. Anyway, the main issue with this flick is that even though it is dealing with an interesting subject (a love affair with a black man and white woman) and it was supposed to shake the status quo, at the end of the day, it was still rather stereotypical and generic after all. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely  worth a look, especially if you are interested in Spike Lee’s work.

An average movie

At the end of the 90’s, just at the beginning of his career, Edward Norton showed up back to back in ‘American History X’ and ‘Fight Club’ , two massive classics, and the guy was overnight already hailed as the best actor of his generation. Almost 20 years later, I have seen actually all his movies and, to be honest, in my opinion, Norton never really fulfilled those expectations. Anyway, at some point, like many other actors, he decided to direct as well and came up with this feature. Eventually, it didn’t get much a love but, since I was a huge fan of the guy back in those days, I probably gave this movie more credit than it actually deserved.  I mean,  the whole thing was really harmless and fairly entertaining but it never flies really high. Basically, even though it is a romantic comedy with a religious subject, it never becomes really deep enough to become truly remarkable. At the end of the day, you might wonder if Edward Norton actually enjoyed the experience since he never directed another movie afterwards. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

When I was a kid, I was a huge fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme and I saw all the movies he made at the beginning of his career. Eventually, at around 14 years old, I started to get interested in other kind of movies and I discovered that his movies were not so great after all. Among his 'classics', this movie is neither his best ('Bloodsport' remains by far his most interesting feature, at least, that’s my opinion) or his worst, it is basically a typical Van Damme vehicle with a generic and predictable plot. Anyway, at the end of the day, it was really similar to 'Bloodsport', maybe too similar explaining why I didn’t care much for it. At least, I have to admit that the Muscles from Brussels was pretty badass here. Eventually, they would make a whole bunch of sequels, none of them starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and starring instead Sasha Mitchell, a very lame Van Damme lookalike, and they were really awful (I can’t believe I have actually seen 2 of those sequels… What a waste of time!). To conclude, I think it is fine if you are 12 years old and you want to watch some brainless action flick but, otherwise, you should probably watch something else instead.

A very good movie

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 29 November 2015 11:11 (A review of Prisoners)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might rewatch it. I remember it quick well though, the first time around, since this movie had built up quite a reputation, I was really eager to check it out. First of all, I have to say that I'm usually not a huge fan of such thrillers because they rely too much on the usual tricks and gimmicks. Well, this one was really a different kind of ball game and it was easily the best movie I have seen in this genre for many years. Where should I start? First, it was emotionally so intense, you spent more than 2 hours with these characters and, at some point, it became pretty much a genuine nightmare. I mean, thanks to some stellar performances and some really solid writing, you get so close to the characters, not only the parents but also the detective looking for those girls, that it became so believable that you could feel their agony and despair. At some point, following this terrible predicament, one of the parents makes a terrible judgment call but how many parents, in the same situation wouldn't do the same? Following 'Incendies', it is another spellbinding thriller delivered by Denis Villeneuve who once again pushed the viewers in the darkest corners of the human mind and, once again, I will keep thinking about this flick for a long time. This first time around, the damned thing was so intense that I didn’t notice the speech of Melissa Leo’s character but it actually explains why she would inflict so much pain and this logic was actually quite terrifying. Anyway, to conclude, it was a daunting and terrific thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 29 November 2015 03:57 (A review of The Good Dinosaur)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out again. Back then, making up for 2014 when they didn’t release any movie, in 2015, we had the pleasure to see 2 Pixar productions. Eventually, 'Inside Out' turned out to be pretty amazing but, to be honest, I had my doubts concerning this 2nd feature. Indeed, I wondered if it would manage to impress me as well and, indeed, it turned out to be rather underwhelming. I mean, don’t misunderstand me, it was still fairly entertaining but it never reached the level of their numerous masterpieces. At least, I have to admit that the animation was once again mind-blowing and it was completely gorgeous to look at. Furthermore, Spot, the young boy, was also truly amazing and I really enjoyed the friendship between this boy and this dinosaur. Still, eventually,  I had a rather hard time to get what the whole thing was actually supposed to be about and I'm  not surprised that the production was difficult and that they delayed its release a few times. I mean, the whole concept seemed interesting as it was supposed to be about what the world would look like if the dinosaurs would have survived. Unfortunately, there was nothing really interesting about this alternative world. I’m afraid. Indeed, apparently, at the end of the day, the dinosaurs would have been slightly more evolved than us, growing up some crops and managing their own cattle but, to be honest, it was all rather underwhelming. Anyway, to conclude, even it turned out to be one of Pixar’s weaker efforts, it was still a decent watch though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 28 November 2015 09:30 (A review of The Giver)

God, how many more Young Adult novels can you find to adapt on the screen? They keep making those movies when, in fact, out of 5 adaptations, maybe one will be actually fairly successful while the rest will pretty much crash and burn at the box-office and it was definitely the case for this movie. By now, I have become so bored by the genre. Especially,  in this case, it is always the same story: it is usually about a dystopian future and it is about a young boy or girl who decides to defy the status-quo. Actually, I felt bad for Jeff Bridges as it was apparently a pet project of his and he had been trying to have the movie made for nearly 20 years. I mean, it is not that it was completely worthless,  like always with these stories, there was actually some potential but,  even though they tell you that the main character has to overcome some great challenges, it is actually nothing challenging at all for the viewer and it all feels terribly generic and predictable. To conclude, I thought it was rather boring and I don't think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you're a fan of the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 28 November 2015 06:38 (A review of The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Even though it is probably not considered as one of the best animated features delivered by Disney, in fact, it is one of my favorites. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for their movies which actually tried to deviate from their usual formula and this one was really something else, that’s for sure. First of all, the animation was simply gorgeous, especially the details on Paris and Notre Dame were just mind-blowing. Above all, it is by far their darkest movie, maybe the reason why it didn’t get much love when it was released, but certainly the reason why I thought it was so intriguing. In this darkness, I was also impressed by Frollo who was definitely a great character. Basically, he is easily one of their most sinister bad guys and he was pretty much a hateful racist with a sexual fantasy for a gypsy woman. Unfortunately, not everything did work though. Indeed, even though Quasimodo was well animated and I enjoyed the fact that he was so strong and a great climber, this character was eventually rather poorly developed. Indeed, he is not what you would call standard leading man material, it seems that they didn’t really know what to do with him so he pretty much ended up as the third wheel beside Phoebus and Esmeralda. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I believe it is probably one of Disney's most underrated features,  I really liked the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look.
