A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 5 months ago on 10 November 2015 11:09 (A review of Blue Jasmine)

Every 5 or 6 years, it seems that Woody Allen still manages to deliver something praised by the critics and this movie was apparently his last decent one. To be honest, Ā I had my doubts since all his supposedly 'decent' efforts like 'Midnight In Paris', 'Vicky Christina Barcelona' or 'Match Point' were indeed not bad but they seriously failed to really impress me. Well, this movie was not different, Ā I'm afraid. I mean, I have to admit it, Ā I did like the damned thing. Cate Blanchett was indeed really impressive giving one of her best performances but, if you would remove her, the whole thing wouldn't have much else to offer. The main issue I had, I guess, is that none of the characters were either likable or really interesting. Basically, Ā the conclusion with this movie is that the people from the upper class are really shallow but the working class people seem to be just as underwhelming and while it might be true, Ā it didn’t result in something really rewarding to watch. Furthermore, Ā some bits were actually rather poorly written proving once again that Allen should probably take a little more time to write his scripts instead of releasing a movie every single year. For example, Ā the whole romance involving Peter Sarsgaard, especially how it started and how it ended, was just rather weak and poorly developed, Ā in my opinion. To conclude, even though I think it is rather overrated, it was still a decent watch though, thanks to Blanchett's stellar performance, I think it is worth a look, especially if you're interested in Woody Allen's work.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 5 months ago on 10 November 2015 09:32 (A review of Land and Freedom (1995))

Honestly, it has been a while since I have watched this flick and maybe I should re-watch it again at some point. Anyway, back in the 90’s, I was quite a fan of Ken Loach’s work and I’m pretty sure that it was the first one of his movies that I managed to watch in the movie theater when it was released.Ā Anyway, I remember it very well, during the Cannes movie festival, there was some great buzz about this flick and many thought it was a favorite for the Golden Palm, especially since Ken Loach was very popular there and never won the prestigious prize before. Eventually, ā€˜Underground’ did manage to win after all. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I thought it was dealing with a fascinating subject, it sounded really amazing and yet, somehow, even though I did like it, I can’t say it really blew me away though. I don’t know, maybe I was just too young at the time to really appreciate it. Eventually, at the end of the day, even though the movie was dealing with a very interesting time period, the characters were not really fascinating. Anyway, to conclude, even though I thought it was slightly disappointing, it was still pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Ken Loach’s work.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 5 months ago on 9 November 2015 03:55 (A review of Backbeat)

It has been a while since I have seen this flick and, to be honest, I actually wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing in the first place. Indeed, even though I do respect their work, I have never been a huge fan of the Beatles (I always thought that the Rolling Stones were much more interesting) but I thought it was still a decent biopic. Indeed, I thought it was a really interesting approach to focus on the forgotten fifth Beatle. To be honest, I had never heard of the guy before but this fact made the whole thing even more interesting to me. Concerning Stephen Dorff, I’m pretty sure it was the first movie starring this actor that I ever saw and, apparently, the guy was at the time heralded as the next best thing but it didn’t last long, I’m afraid, and he turned out to be a rather underwhelming actor after all. Still, I have to admit that he was actually pretty good in this flick. To conclude, even though it is probably not a masterpiece, I thought it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in the Beatles.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 5 months ago on 9 November 2015 02:05 (A review of Kill Me Again)

What the hell happened to John Dhal? I mean, the guy never really managed to breakthrough in a big way but he hasn’t release a new directing effort for almost a decade and he has been mostly working for almost every single TV-show that you could think of ( ā€˜House of Cards’, ā€˜Californication’, ā€˜Dexter’, ā€˜Arrow’, ā€˜Homeland’, ā€˜True Blood’, ā€˜Breaking Bad’,…). Ā It’s too bad because I always had a weak spot his work, especially the neo-noir features that he used to make at the beginning of his career. This directing debut is a perfect example. Indeed, apparently, it was barely seen when it was released but I thought it was actually pretty good. To be honest, I always had a hard time to care about the modern thrillers because they are so far-fetched and, I have to admit it, this one was actually not different, the story was not really realistic at all, that’s for sure. And yet, Dhal managed to create such a great mood, I believe he is one of the very few modern directors who really succeeded in making a contemporary feature with some genuine film noir qualities. On top of that, back in those days, Val Kilmer was still a pretty decent actor and, with this then-wife, Joanne Whalley, they had some great chemistry together. To conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, I really liked it and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 5 months ago on 8 November 2015 10:17 (A review of Blackhat)

Seriously, it must one oft he most disappointing movies I have ever watched... Indeed, when I heard that Michael Mann,Ā  after 6 long years, was finally coming up with a new directing effort, of course, I got pretty excited.Ā  Eventually,Ā  it didn't get much love when it was released and it was pretty much a flop but I still wanted to check it out anyway. Well, unfortunately, it turned out to be pretty lame after all and easily the weakest movie delivered by Michael Mann (Sure, I have seen since 'The Keep' and it's really bad but I'm not sure which one was actually worse). It's too bad because, with the current fear of cyber terrorism, the whole thing definitely had some potential but I was just amazed about how poorly developed it was. First of all, I have nothing against Chris Hemsworth, he is fine playing an Asgardian god or just an average hunk but he would be one of my last choices to play a talented hacker. Then, you had this terrible idea of having the hacker released from prison to help the police. It's a very old gimmick that has been overused through the years and it didn’t add anything to the story. Then, why the hell was this guy, who was basically a technical consultant, involved during a police assault? In fact, even though the main character worked closely with the police during the whole thing, they all get killed and he actually managed to fix everything, only with the help of his new girlfriend who was apparently just a simple network administrator, and the police/CIA/FBI/whatever apparently simply vanished from the whole story. Anyway, to conclude, Ā I could go on and on about this, it was just really weak and I don't think it is really worth a look.Ā

A bad movie

Posted : 9 years, 5 months ago on 8 November 2015 02:20 (A review of Friends & Lovers)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick. Indeed, it is really obscure (I was only the 4th listal member who apparently saw this movie) but since Robert Downey Jr. was involved, I thought I might as well check it out. On top of that, I had this on DVD for a very long time (more than 4 years...) so it was really time to watch the damned thing. Well, eventually, it turned out to be pretty terrible, that's for sure. I mean, I actually have a weak spot for this kind of movies during which a group of very old friends gather together, but this must be the weakest movie I have seen in this genre. For example, during most of the duration, one of the guys have some major beef towards his father when in fact, his dad didn't cheat on his mother, didn't beat him and he wasn't an alcoholic or a junkie so it seems to be rather far-fetched to have this grudge which lasted long enough to be conveniently solved just towards the end after a very quick chitchat. Concerning the rest of the characters, it was not much better, I'm afraid. Basically, the movie mostly focused on them managing to find a romantic interest before the end following some rather boring and rather cumbersome process. Anyway, to conclude, it was pretty bad and I don't think it worth a look at all.Ā

A very bad movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 7 November 2015 04:30 (A review of Dead Girl)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick. Indeed, it is seriously obscure and almost no one here on Listal has seen this movie but since I had the DVD for so long (more than 4 years...), I thought it was really time to watch the damned thing. Well, it turned out to be pretty terrible and it was easily the worst film I have seen recently. Basically, it was one of these abysmal indie features with some supposedly artistic qualities but the end-result here was seriously pathetic. I mean, the first half was what 'Inception' could have turned out to be if you would have Ā removed the action scenes and if it would have been made by a very weak director. The second half was even worse, some kind of necrophilic black comedy, even though I'm sure you might really want to call it a comedy. Anyway, it was just terrible, that's for sure. Eventually, I give it some extra points because, apparently, it was in fact an experimental project that was never meant to be released but, to be honest, I think they came up with this excuse just because the whole thing was so terrible. To conclude, it was pretty bad and it is definitely not worth a look.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 6 November 2015 01:38 (A review of Kirikou and the Sorceress)

I always wondered if this movie was really succesful abroad. Anyway, I remember it very well when it was released in France, it was a big critical and commercial success at the time. After hearing a lot of great things about the damned thing, I was quite eager to check it out and I have to admit that it really deserved its stellar reputation. Indeed, it is something completely different then anything you might have ever seen coming from the US or Japan and, therefore, it was really refreshing. Considering the story itself, even though it was charming and entertaining enough, I had my doubts. I mean, it seemed to be rather oriented towards the young kids but, above all, I really wonder if the African people would actually identify with this tale and those characters or maybe it was just a Western point-of-view on their culture. Still, I definitely enjoyed how the whole thing looked and the general vibe. Surprisingly, it took them 7 years to come up with a sequel which was not bad but still a slight step-down from this movie. Anyway, to conclude, even though I don’t it is actually a real masterpiece, it was a very original animated feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 5 November 2015 01:30 (A review of Legend)

At almost 80 years old, Ridley Scott is still incredibly productive and after several disappointing pictures, he once again managed to make an impressive come-back with ā€˜The Martian’ which turned out to be a big critical and commercial success. Personally, I have seen every single movie directed by this guy and, through the years, I have developed some kind of love-hate relationship with this director. Indeed, on one hand, even if his movies are usually fairly entertaining and above all very well made and visually appealing, very often, I find their stories rather shallow and sometimes even rather underwhelming. This movie is actually a perfect example. Apparently, it didn’t get much love when it was released but I thought it was actually pretty good. Basically, it is a rather weak story with some awesome visuals. Still, in my opinion, Scott managed to create a fascinating world with a truly bad-ass villain and I also loved the introduction with a terrific speech delivered by Darkness himself. Apparently, there is a much longer director’s cut available and it would be pretty neat to check it out at some point. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I actually have a weak spot for the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 4 November 2015 10:01 (A review of Beautiful Creatures)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well give it a try. Well, by now, Ā I have seen my share of Young Adult book adaptations but this one turned out to be the most boring I have seen so far. It wasn't necessarily the worst one but it was just so damned long and slow, as a result, Ā I really had a hard time to care about the damned thing. I mean, basically, it takes like forever to take off but even when it was finally revealed what was going on with this mysterious girl, everything happening afterwards was still rather tedious. At least, Ā Emma Thompson seemed to have some fun with her double-part and I was once again impressed by Alden Ehrenreich who managed to do a lot with this weak material turning this lead character into someone quite charismatic and almost interesting to follow. Concerning Emmy Rossum, she still look stunning, maybe even more nowadays, Ā but it's just rather sad that we only get to see her in such underwhelming productions. To conclude, the whole thing was pretty weak and I don't think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.Ā
