An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 22 October 2015 10:01 (A review of Restless)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Gus Van Sant's work, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, even though it was a decent watch,  I can’t say it really blow me away though. I guess, the main issue I had is that I already saw recently 2 other movies ('Now is Good' and 'The Fault in Our Stars') with exactly the same story,  about a young girl dying of cancer or whatever and how she falls in love. It is actually unfair to this movie since it was actually released before the other 2 but it didn't add much to the genre, I'm afraid. Still,  the directing was solid and both leads gave some pretty good performances. I was especially impressed by Mia Wasikowska.  It was already the 3rd movie starring her that I have seen recently and after 'Maps to the Stars' and 'Only Lovers Left Alive', she definitely displayed some skills here again. Coming to our main feature, I did like the characters and the mood provided but the whole thing still felt slightly generic to me. To conclude, even though it was nothing really great, it was still a decent romantic feature and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 22 October 2015 08:13 (A review of The Little Mermaid)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, first of all, back in the 80’s, Disney was going through some rough times and even though most of their movies had done fairly well at the box-office, none of them had been very memorable.  In fact, even if during the 70’s, their animated movies didn't turn out to be really impressive either. Eventually, they managed to make a massive come-back with this movie which would be the start of the era known as the Disney Renaissance. In fact, I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theatre when it was released and I must have been 9 or 10 years old at the time. Eventually, to be honest, even though I thought it was well made and fairly entertaining, I can’t say I really loved this movie though. Basically, this movie would establish the template for the following Disney productions during the 90’s and one of the trademarks of this template would be some musical-comedy format with Broadway-styled songs but, to be honest, I have always been rather bored by these songs. Well, after 30 long years and many rewatches, I think I finally get this movie. Above all, what really impressed was Ariel as this character was pretty much pitch-perfect. Indeed, not only she was quite gorgeous but she also had the charisma of such classic princess like Snow White or Cinderella. However, what made her such a success was the fact that she was also a perfect representation of a modern teenager and this mix was just so well done. The story itself was also a solid old fashioned fairy tale, something they used to do so well in the past and it was a great idea to finally come-back to this genre, especially with such a tremendous end-result. The only down point would be when they turned Ariel into a mute. Obviously, they needed to find some obstacle to temporarily slow down this romance but this choice made Ariel, such a well-rounded character, terrible passive during the 3rd act. Anyway, to conclude, even if it might not be flawless, it was still a massive classic fairy tale from Disney and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 21 October 2015 08:56 (A review of Dream House)

Even though this movie has a rather lousy reputation,  since I have always been interested in Jim Sheridan's work, I thought I might as well check it out.  On top of that,  there was a pretty good cast involved. Unfortunately,  the whole thing turned out to be rather underwhelming,  I'm afraid. Apparently,  there were some big issues between Jim Sheridan and the producer and, after doing some re-shooting, they re-cut the film without him resulting in this mess. Basically,  it was some rather weak thriller which didn't quite figure out if it was actually paranormal or psychological. Like many other thrillers, it keeps you in the dark for as long as possible during a very slow and boring built-up and, suddenly, during the last 10 minutes, it went really fast and everything was explained with something rather far-fetched.  Fortunately,  I haven't seen before the trailer which was at the time heavily criticized for revealing too many of the movie's secrets. Even so, it didn't work very well and reminded me of 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others', 2 movies I didn't particularly enjoy.  Eventually,  this movie would be mostly remembered as the one during which Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz fell in love and they have been together ever since. To conclude,  even though the whole thing did have some potential,  it was still rather disappointing and I don't think it is really worth a look.

I already saw this movie, I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released, but since I have it on DVD and since I just bought an awesome brand new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. I remember perfectly when I saw this flick the first time though. Indeed, back then, I just started to live in the Netherlands and I was coming back to France for the Christmas holidays. For the 1st installment, my best buddy had no idea what to expect but, this time, he was just dying to watch this follow-up. Therefore, we planned to watch this one and we went once again with a group of friends. Anyway, it was definitely really awesome, I was starting to feel the epicness of the whole thing even more and, in my opinion, it was an improvement on 'The Fellowship'. Indeed, this time, there was no need to introduce the characters and most of the movie was filled with some amazing battle scenes. On top of that, there was this one major character who was finally properly introduced and it was obviously Gollum. Even though 20 years later, he might not seem much, back then, it was such a milestone and the first time that such a 3 dimensional and compelling character was created through CGI and motion capture. Anyway, this character was just truly mind-blowing, it was totally revolutionary and we should definitely give some credit to both Jackson and Serkis for this amazing work. I have seen this movie many times by now and I have to admit that, the last time I watched it, for the first time ever, I actually preferred ‘The Fellowship…’ probably because this 2nd installment felt more disjointed. Anyway, to conclude, as a stand alone movie, it is still really amazing but, as one third of a great epic tale, it is even more awesome and the damned thing is pretty much a must-see for any decent movie buff.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 21 October 2015 11:21 (A review of Love Actually)

I already saw this movie (In fact, I’m pretty sure I saw it in the movie theater when it was released) but my wife was quite eager to check it out again. First of all, I have to confess that I have always had a weak spot for romantic-comedies. Unfortunately, there are in fact not so many great romantic-comedies out there and most of them are actually terribly underwhelming. Anyway, in this genre, this movie is pretty much a classic so you might assume that I really loved the damned thing. On top of that, it was written and directed by Richard Curtis, the guy who wrote ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ which is easily one of the very best movies in this genre, at least, in my opinion. Well, eventually, even though I thought it was not bad, I can’t say I really loved the damned thing though. I mean, sure, there was an impressive cast involved, maybe the biggest one I have ever seen in a romantic-comedy (Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Sienna Guillory, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Martin Freeman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Andrew Lincoln, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Laura Linney, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Alan Rickman, Rodrigo Santoro, Billy Bob Thornton, Rowan Atkinson, January Jones, Elisha Cuthbert, Claudia Schiffer, Shannon Elizabeth, Denise Richards). However, even though the various stories involved were usually quite cute, I don't think that any of them was really amazing. That’s also the problem with having so many characters and so many sub-plots, as a result, you never spend enough time with one single story to really care about it. At least, not all these little stories did end up with a sappy happy-ending which was refreshing but they were still alll rather half-baked. Anyway, to conclude, even though I think it is actually rather overrated, I have to admit that it is still a decent watch though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 20 October 2015 07:51 (A review of Hotel Transylvania)

Honestly,  I wasn't expecting much from this flick but my daughter picked it up so I still ended up watching it. Eventually, for an Adam Sandler production,  I have to admit that it wasn't so bad after all, especially if you compare it to his latest movies which had been all rather abysmal. However, it was still not really amazing, I'm afraid. In fact even though it was an animated feature, it still pretty much followed the same formula always used by Sandler. Indeed, it starts up with a rather dubious concept but, then, you soon realize that it is all rather harmless and you end up with a supposedly deep moral conclusion. Concerning the animation, it was decent but it has been a while since I have seen an animated feature with such an ADHD complex. Indeed, it goes so fast, there is so much going on all the freaking time, it was just really tiresome to behold. I mean, if you decide to make a movie about monsters, you don't necessarily need to show all of them, almost all the time together on the screen. Seriously,  I think there was maybe 20 or 30 talking parts. Anyway, to conclude, even though I have seen worse, I didn't like it much and I don't think it is really worth a look.

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 20 October 2015 10:15 (A review of Loaded Weapon 1)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick but I don't think I would watch it again just to make sure that it is as lame as I can remember. Anyway, nowadays, I don't care much about trailers. Indeed, most of them are just way too long (about 2 mins and 30 secs) and they gave way too much information about the plot. However, when I was a kid, I used to love it when you would get to see the trailers before the movie and I would usually make a deal with myself to watch most of them. That's pretty much what happened with this flick. Indeed, back in those days, I must have been 13 years old, I saw the trailer, I thought it would be hilarious and I even went to see the damned thing in the movie theater. Well, eventually, like most spoof comedies, it turned out to be rather lame and underwhelming after all. Sure, it was pretty obvious that they would make at some point a parody of all these buddy cops action flicks but even Samuel L. Jackson (a year before his breakthrough with 'Pulp Fiction') couldn't make this movie actually entertaining. To conclude, even though I have seen worse, this movie was pretty weak and I don't think it is worth a look.

A bad movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 19 October 2015 09:01 (A review of Batman & Robin)

This movie is a quite a legend and it is indeed a terrible mess. I already didn't really like 'Batman Forever' much but, basically,  everything that went wrong with the previous installment went even worse in this flick. Where should I start? Once again,  they gave an overdosis of villains who were all really pathetic, especially Bane who was completely ruined here. On top of that, between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman,  it was really difficult to point out who gave the worst performance. Furthermore,  even though it seemed to be a rather dubious choice to add Robin to the franchise,  the addition of Batgirl was even worse and completely misguided. So, the whole thing was overcrowded, it looked really ugly and those oneliners were just ridiculous. Eventually,  even though the career of George Clooney miraculously survived this disaster, the consequences for Chris O'Donnell and Alicia Silverstone would be so disastreous that their respective career would never really recover from the blow. Concerning Joel Schumacher, even though he has managed to keep on working after this debacle, I'm afraid his reputation was forever ruined.  To conclude, even though it might not be the worst super-hero feature out there,  it is still one of the very worst and you should definitely avoid it.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 19 October 2015 11:31 (A review of Look Who's Talking Now)

I have to admit it, I really liked 'Look Who's Talking' and I even thought that 'Look Who's Talking Too'  was actually decent (I might be mistaken on this one but I'm not sure I feel like double-checking just to make sure I'm wrong) but, with this 3rd installment, but that's pretty obvious that they really dropped the ball. I mean, basically, they got lucky with the first movie, with a rather inane concept, they managed to make something actually fairly entertaining which turned out to be a box-office success. With the 2nd movie, it was barely working anymore and with this final 3rd installment, it had all become rather cringe-inducing. I mean, after a little boy and a little girl, what shouldn't we make their pets talk as well? That was just a seriously misguided choice and the whole thing was just so boring to watch. I mean, at least, after Bruce Willis and Roseanne Barr, they brought up again some nice actors (Danny DeVito and Dianne Keaton) to provide the voice-overs but that was certainly not enough to save this mess. To conclude, even if you, like me, actually enjoyed 'Look Who's Talking', make yourself a favor and just avoid this rather lame sequel.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 19 October 2015 11:06 (A review of Look Who's Talking Too)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and there is a possibility that, if I would re-watch it nowadays, that my rating would drastically drop. Basically, when I was a kid, I thought that 'Look who's talking' was pretty awesome, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Obviously, since it turned out to be a box-office success, they decided to quickly release a sequel which I was also quite eager to see (give me a break... I was just a kid back in those days!). Eventually, I thought it was actually a decent watch but there was no denying that the whole thing was rather misguided. I mean sure, it was pretty obvious that they would give little Mikey a sister, that was fine. In fact, the biggest problem was that, since Mikey was growing up, the whole concept seemed rather ineffective. Indeed, the idea was to hear the thoughts of someone who is not supposed to be able to talk but since Mikey, at that point, was already starting to talk on his own, then, what was the point of hearing his thoughts? Anyway, I guess I'm being really generous with my rating here and you should watch this at your own risk.
