A very good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 13 December 2015 06:38 (A review of Chorus)

To be honest, I thought it took a while to take off but I guess it was maybe due to the fact that I didn't know anything about this movie or its plot before watching it. At least, right from the start, I have to admit that I was by taken its esthetic beauty thanks to a beautiful black and white photography. In fact, he did remind me of the work of Ingmar Bergman, not only with the black and white imagery, but also for its sober and minimalist look, removing any artificial effects and focusing more on the harrowing emotions experienced by the characters. Still, at last, at some point, it became pretty obvious what it was all about and, from then on, it became basically the worst nightmare for anyone who is a parent. It shows how devastating such an event can be, obviously for the parents, but also for the rest of the family and even for the perpetrator. For some reason, I was especially touched by the emotions displayed by his friend who spent 10 years thinking about his buddy when he was himself only 8 years old when it all happened. Anyway, to conclude, it was basically one of those emotionally draining features, you watch them once, they hit you like a truck and I'm not sure I will ever re-watch it again but it was definitely a really strong drama and it is absolutely worth a look.

An average movie

To be honest, since this movie had a rather lame reputation, I wasn't expecting much from it but since it was Francis Ford Coppola's latest directing effort, I was still quite eager to check it out. Indeed, after a long break of 10 years, Coppola came back with these 3 rather obscure indie features. Right now, I still have to watch 'Youth Without Youth' but I was pleasantly surprised by 'Tetro', however, this last directing effot was a major step down, I'm afraid. Basically, even though there were a few nice ideas here and there (I especially enjoyed the photography during the night scenes but even this became rather redundant very quickly) but most of it was rather garbage. I mean, Coppola apparently tried to make some kind of minimalist experimental horror feature and he threw basically everything he could find in the mix : a second rate horror writer, a spooky town and a haunted hotel, some gothic kids, a sherif/writer/psychopath, some mass killing, Edgar Allen Poe sometimes popping up at random and even the death of a child during a boat accident which was somewhat rather reminiscent of the death of his own son Gian-Carlo Coppola. Well, half of this was just not interesting or entertaining and, with a running time of barely 80 mins, none of them of those elements was propely developed. To conclude, I'm afraid it is probably the weakest movie directed by Coppola so far and I don't think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 12 December 2015 07:45 (A review of Saint)

Dick Maas is probably, after Paul Verhoeven, the most successful Dutch film director, at least, commercially speaking. So, when he made his come-back in the Netherlands in 2007 (after a failed attempt at an international career), there was quite some hype. Unfortunately, even though 'Moordwijven' had a very interesting concept, it turned out to be terribly underwhelming. Well, with this follow-up, the end-result was once again pretty disappointing. I mean, the concept of making an horror movie about Sinterklaas (some kind of Dutch version of Santa Claus) definitely had some potential and, obviously, it created quite a controversy before its release. Unfortunately, just like with 'Moordwijven', I was actually amazed about how poorly developed the whole thing was. Apparently, Maas spent most of his time and energy developing the special effects and gore elements but they still ended looking rather cheap and he apparently completely forgot to provide a decent story. Indeed, the whole thing was really short (just above 80 mins) but there were still a whole bunch of characters but none of them was actually entertaining or interesting to follow. Seriously, it has been a while since I  have seen such a boring slasher flick. To conclude, it was yet another weak directing effort for Dick Maas and I don't think it is really worth a look.

A classic

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 11 December 2015 11:11 (A review of Daybreak)

I already saw this movie, but since it was a while back and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that I really didn't remember anything about this movie. On top of that, I was this time quite blown away by the damned thing so I'm really glad I checked it out again after all these years. I don't know, for some reasons, maybe because I recently fell in love with a beautiful and amazing young woman, this story of a doomed romance hit me so hard. Seriously, I was on the verge of tears through most of the duration. Anyway, it is not very often that a director get the opportunity to launch a whole new genre but that’s basically what happened with Marcel CarnĂ©. I’m pretty sure that the guy didn’t realize it at the time that he would pretty much create a new genre which would have a huge impact on the French cinema. This new style was called poetic-realism, a style which would become Carné’s trademark, a style he would start with ‘Le quai des brumes’ and ended up with this movie. Eventually, Jean Gabin and Arletty were both amazing here, that’s for sure. Even though it takes place in a realistic social background (‘realism’), the dialogues and emotions rise above (‘poetic’) and even though it seems that everything was shot on location, it was in fact shot in studios creating some interesting and stylish canvas. In this case, there was something so genuine about this couple and, yet, everything they said was also so poetic so this movie definitely belonged to this genre, that's for sure. This approach would be later on criticized and rejected by the French New Wave but that’s another story. Anyway, to conclude, in my opinion, it is one of the greatest love stories ever told and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 11 December 2015 08:16 (A review of Praying with Anger)

[Link removed - login to see]Last week, I watched ‘After Earth’, one of the latest directing efforts by M. Night Shyamalan, and, obviously, it was pretty lame. After watching the damned thing, I was wondering if I would ever be able to watch his directing debut. Well, after making some research, I actually found it on Youtube (I have added it to Listal if you are interested). Eventually, even  Shyamalan himself dismissed the whole thing so I had some rather low expectations and, indeed, it was not really a pleasant watch. In fact, it could have been his deepest movie so far dealing with his Indian background but, unfortunately, as usual with this director, it was so  pretentious, it was just cringe-inducing to behold. Indeed, not only did he direct this movie, he produced it, wrote it and even played the leading character with a terrible end-result. On top of that, even though it was interesting to see him trying to connect with his ancestors’s culture, it was just rather condescending. At least, we have to keep in mind that the guy was only 22 years old when he made this. To conclude, the whole thing was pretty lame and I don’t think it is worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of M. Night Shyamalan’s work.

A classic

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 10 December 2015 11:35 (A review of Jour de Fete)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch the damned thing at some point. Basically, in France, in 1995, there was a big celebration about the fact that cinema was existing already for 100 years and, through the whole year, they displayed some old classics in my city which was pretty neat. Well, that’s when I saw this movie and since it had a rather stellar reputation, I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. Well, eventually, even though it was indeed a decent watch, to be honest, it didn’t really blow me away and I thought it was actually fairly disappointing. I don’t know, at a very young age, I started to watch Charles Chaplin’s work, I basically grew up with his movies, ever since I have been a huge fan and even though Tati was not bad and fairly amusing, he never came near the genius displayed by Chaplin, at least, that’s my opinion. To conclude, even though I thought it was disappointing, it is still pretty much a classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 9 December 2015 03:06 (A review of In the Bleak Midwinter)

After making some rather obscure features for almost 20 years, Kenneth Branagh has recently made somewhat a comeback with ‘Thor’and he has been making some big blockbusters ever since (‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’, ‘Cinderella’). Anyway, back in the 90’s, I was a big fan of his work so I was really eager to check this flick, even if it is one of his most unknown features. Indeed,  a year earlier, he made ‘Frankenstein’, his biggest and most ambitious project so far but it was rather poorly received (personally, I thought it was not bad though). Apparently, he was eager to make something much smaller and this movie definitely achieved this goal. Indeed, for the first time in his directing career, Branagh didn’t cast himself and I must admit that it was quite refreshing, especially after ‘Frankenstein’ which was pretty much a massive ego-trip. Anyway, basically, it was a rather simple movie, with a simple tale with some decent characters but I thought it was quite entertaining. To conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, I thought it was pretty good and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Kenneth Branagh’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 9 December 2015 11:27 (A review of Les kidnappeurs)

Basically, it is another really obscure French feature (in fact, I’m the only one who saw the damned thing on Listal, even on IMDB, just a little more than 200 people have seen it which is really really low). To be honest, I’m not really sure why I actually watched the damned thing in the first place but my guess was because there was a pretty neat cast involved (Melvil Poupaud, Élodie Bouchez, Romain Duris). Anyway, at the end of the day, it was basically a rather generic heist feature which tried to be really hype but I thought it was fairly entertaining, even if it was really forgettable. Eventually, you could almost call it a French ‘Ocean’s eleven’, even though this movie was actually released 3 years before. I have noticed that Elie Kakou, a rather prominent French comedian at the time, was also involved in this movie and I was wonderering what happened to the guy since I haven’t heard from him for so many years. Well, I have just discovered that this actor actually died a year after making this movie. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 8 December 2015 09:30 (A review of Kalifornia)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Anyway, even though it is probably not one of the most famous movies starring Brad Pitt, it has still managed to become more or less a cult-classic after all these years. Personally, I always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, back in those days, Pitt just got his breakthrough with ‘Thelma & Louise’ a couple of years before but he wasn’t yet such a massive movie star but he was definitely showing some great potential in this flick. Indeed, he was definitely the best thing about this movie as he delivered a very solid performance. Unfortunately, the whole mixing of those 2 couples didn’t really work for me and it all felt rather forced and far-fetched to me. Concerning Dominic Sena, it was definitely a promising directing debut but, unfortunately, his career has been rather underwhelming ever since. Anyway, to conclude, even though I wasn’t a huge fan of this flick, I thought it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Brad Pitt’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 7 December 2015 09:30 (A review of Chocolat)

I remember it quite well when this movie was released. Indeed, there was quite some buzz about it and it was even nominated for 5 Academy awards (it didn't win any after all). With all this and since I really loved 'What's eating Gilbert Grape', also directed by Lasse Hallstrom and starring Johnny Depp, I was really eager to check it out and I had some some rather high expectations about the damned thing. Eventually,  to be honest, I thought it was actually rather disappointing. I mean, it was not bad and the whole thing was really harmless, I'll give you that, but I just couldn't connect with this supposedly charming and whimsical tale. I don't know,  maybe it's because I'm French but it think I have never seen a more stereotypical French village before. I mean, except for Juliette Binoche who is obviously French,  every other actor seemed to come from somewhere else in the world which didn't have to be a problem but it had also an impact on their performances.  Indeed, on one hand, Binoche gave, as usual,  a very intense performance, clearly rising above this fluffy material, while all the other actors were far less convincing and they all seemed to belong to some average comedy creating some big clash concerning the tone. Still, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was a decent watch but I'm definitely not a big fan of this movie.
