An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 9 February 2016 10:22 (A review of Mood Indigo)

To be honest, when I heard about this movie,  I had some rather mixed feelings. Indeed, on one hand, when I was much younger, I did read 'L'écume  des jours' but even though it is a huge classic in France, I didn't really care much for the damned thing and, from the same writer, I preferred the much darker 'J'irai cracher sur vos tombes' which is one of my favorite books. On the other hand, Michel Gondry is one of the most interesting directors at work nowadays so I was still eager to check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be one of the weirdest and craziest movies I have ever seen. Unfortunately, even though it might sound like a compliment, the weirdness never really stopped in this movie and it was so relentless that it became almost unbearable to watch. Even the dialogues were almost impossible to follow which was pretty weird since I'm French. I understand that it must have been a huge challenge for Gondry to create this manic  world but, even though it would be awesome for a videoclip (after all, Gondry became famous for his really inventive videoclips), to sit for more than 2 hours watching all this surrealist stuff was just too much for me and the damned thing was just really exhausting. Anyway, to conclude, I still give it a few extra points for being really original and visually impressive and I still think it is worth a look but if you don't care about experimental movies, you should probably avoid this one.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 9 February 2016 11:18 (A review of Under Suspicion)

Since it is a rather obscure flick, I had really no idea what to expect from this flick but since I was starring both Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman, it was really eager to check it out. I didn’t know at the time but it was in fact a remake ofĀ  a really good French thriller, ā€˜Garde Ć  vue’, and even though you could argue that the whole thing was another rather pointless remake, I thought it was actually pretty neat. Indeed, even though the story itself was nothing really amazing,Ā  Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman were both really impressive, giving some of their best performances. Just to see them facing each other is really worth watching the damned thing. Something disappointing about this movie though was the fact that, once again, Monica Bellucci was rather poorly used. I mean, sheĀ  was another reason why I wanted to check this flick and, as usual, she looked really stunning but, to be honest, she did’t have much to do except for looking completely gorgeous. To conclude, even though it was maybe not a masterpiece, it was still a really solid thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 8 February 2016 10:32 (A review of The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet)

After Ā 4 long years, at last Jean-Pierre Jeunet was finally coming up with a new directing effort so, of course, Ā I was really eager to check it out. To be honest, I didn't care much for his last movie, 'Micmacs Ć  tire-larigot', and this last one barely got noticed when it was released but I still hoped it would be at least a decent watch. Well, at the end of the day, I'm afraid t this movie turned out to be even more underwhelming. First of all, I have to admit that I didn't see it in 3D as it was intended to be seen (I watched it at home on DVD) so maybe I missed something but I doubt it. I mean, it was not bad at all, I'll give you that, and it was indeed visually really neat, which was something rather expected from this director, but I guess I'm getting a little bit tired of his obsession of delivering every time again some supposedly quirky and whimsical tale. Seriously, it was a rather weak story with some fairly uninteresting characters and the whole thing was in fact rather tedious to watch. Basically, it felt like a really generic and predictable children story. Anyway, to conclude, even though the whole thing was rather disappointing, it was still far from being a bad movie and I still believe it is worth a look, especially if you're interested in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's work.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 8 February 2016 04:23 (A review of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer)

To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. In fact, I still remember very well the first time I saw the damned thing. In fact, at the time, I had never heard of this flick before and it is my brother-in-law who brought it to our attention saying that it had a very notorious reputation, that it was one of the scariest movies ever made. So, we sat there with the 3 of us (my sister, her boyfriend and myself), expecting something really horrible to happen but, to be honest, we didn’t care much for the whole thing. I mean, sure, it was well made and Michael Rooker gave a really solid performance but, in my opinion, the movie didn’t have much else to offer. Basically, it is a decent serial-killer flick and the only original thing was that the guy didn’t get caught at the end. Apparently, that was something that deeply shocked the viewers at the time, that someone so evil would get away with doing something so terrible but, to be honest, I thought this approach was clever but not much more than that, I’m afraid. To conclude, even though it didn’t really blow me away, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 8 February 2016 12:15 (A review of Hedwig And The Angry Inch)

To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this flick. The main reason was probably that I kept hearing some really good things about this movie and it seemed to be a really cool cult-classic. Eventually, even though I thought it was a decent watch and I was definitely able to appreciate it, I can’t say it really blew me away though. It’s not that the whole thing really shocked me, not at all, in fact, it was pretty much the whole point of this flick. Honestly, I think I just didn’t care much about these characters and what they were going through. At the end of the day, it all depends where you stand regarding such over-the-top extravagant characters. If you love this kind of characters, you will probably love this movie, otherwise, I’m not sure this movie will be really for you. Anyway, eventually, after this promising directing debut, it would take John Cameron Mitchell 5 years to finally come up with a follow-up which would be the even more controversial ā€˜Shortbus’ which was equally flawed but still interesting to watch. Ā To conclude, even though I didn’t really connect with the whole thing, it was still something quite original, only therefore it already deserves some extra credit, and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 7 February 2016 10:08 (A review of Jersey Boys)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this movie but since it was directed by Clint Eastwood, I was still eager to check it out. First of all, I thought it would be an adaptation of the musical of the same name but, no, it was in fact a really straightforward biopic of this band. It should have been an improvement Ā since I'm not a huge fan of the musical genre but, even so, I really didn’t care much about this movie. Above all, I thought the whole thing was just seriously boring. I mean, it took them at least 1 hour before they finally released their first hit, so it was pretty slow but, on top of that, everything that happened during that time was rather underwhelming. Even worse, from the moment they finally got their breakthrough, the whole thing became even more boring. Honestly, I wonder what Eastwood saw in this story and, at first, I thought he was just checking the musical genre of his bucket list but he decided to do something even less daring after all. Anyway, to conclude, even though I have seen worse, I still believe it is one of the weakest directing efforts delivered by Clint Eastwood so far and I don't think it is really worth a look.Ā

A classic

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 6 February 2016 08:47 (A review of Grease)

Yesterday, I proposed to my wife to watch a movie but since she didn't care for anything I had in mind, I suggested to watch again this movie. For me, it was only the 2nd time I saw it (as a matter of fact, the 1st time around was also with my wife many years ago) but she had seen it countless of times and it is definitely a childhood classic for her. Well, eventually, as I expected, I was seriously bored by the whole thing. I mean, in fact, I was even planning to give it an even lower rating but since there were a couple of good tunes and since the dancing was pretty neat, I gave it a few extra points but it doesn't change the fact that I didn't like it much. Basically, the main issue I have with the damned thing is that not only it is terribly sweet and cheesy but it is in fact really about nothing at all. I mean, I believe that if you love movies because they tell you a great story or show you some compelling characters or talk about some interesting subjects, then I have some serious doubts that you will like this movie. Seriously, it is not very often that I came across such a successful movie which turned out to be in fact so empty. Anyway, to conclude, I think I'm being actually generous with my rating here but I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 5 February 2016 11:47 (A review of Heartbreakers)

To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this flick. Indeed, it really looked lame but, somehow, I still ended up watching the damned thing. Anyway, for once, I have to admit that it turned out to be in fact a rather decent comedy which I really didn’t expect. In fact, by now, I have seen about half of the movie starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and it is by far the best one she has made in my opinion. At the end of the day, it doesn’t mean that this movie was in fact great, it means that, even though I have to admit that she is extremely lovely to look at, her career has been rather underwhelming after all. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I thought it was a rather effective dark comedy and, above all, Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt were perfectly cast here. Unfortunately, at some point, they decided that the whole thing couldn’t be mean all the way, so they softened up the tone slowly towards the end and, as a result, it all became rather sentimental and boring which was too bad. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is actually a decent comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 5 February 2016 09:08 (A review of Mannenharten)

I wasn’t really expecting much from this flick but since my wife and I have a weak spot for romantic-comedies, I thought we might as well check it out. Eventually, the whole thing pretty much used the same concept as Ā ā€˜Alles is Liefde’ which was already a copy of ā€˜Love Actually’ so the whole thing felt really derivative, that’s for sure. The main issue with this kind of movies (even with ā€˜Love Actually’ which I always found rather overrated) is that, instead of giving the viewers a fully-fledged story, they give a whole bunch of half-baked little tales. There were still here and there some really solid scenes though. For example, the best scene was easily the one involving Fabian Jansen (obviously playing a character inspired by what Zach Galifianakis did in ā€˜The Hangover’ franchise) during the most disastrous date you could think of. It was really awesome and quite hilarious but, unfortunately, everything else afterwards involving this guy had nothing to do with this brilliant bit and, completely at random, he meets a woman in a supermarket and falls in love with her. The worst thing about this is that they first convince us that the guy is pretty much a nightmare and, yet, this very cute girl falls for him for no obvious reasons.Ā  And that’s basically how all those love stories were handled. To conclude, even though I have seen worse, I didn’t really care much for this movie and I don’t think it is really worth a look.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 4 months ago on 4 February 2016 10:25 (A review of Hero (1992))

To be honest, it has been ages since I have since this movie and maybe I should check it out again at some point. Anyway, I have noticed that it didn’t really get much love but I thought it was actually a fairly decent dark satire. Indeed, even though it was maybe not really amazing, I thought it was quite entertaining and it worked well for me. Ā Basically, it shows how we try to kid ourselves that we are all fine people, when, in fact, people tend to be rather messed up and this movie tried to play around with this idea. Eventually, it never became really dark Ā like, for example, ā€˜The King of Comedy ā€˜ (such an amazing movie directed by Martin Scorsese that really deserves much more love) . As a result, I have to admit that the whole thing never really did reach its full potential and, with such a neat concept, with a such a great cast, I should have been in fact much better but I still think it was quite entertaining. To conclude, I really have a weak spot for this movie, I believe it is quite underrated and it is definitely worth a look.Ā
