An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 1 February 2016 09:42 (A review of Me and You)

When I heard that Bernardo Ā Bertolucci was finally coming up with a new directing effort, of course, I got pretty excited and even though it didnā€™t get much love when it was released, I was still eager to check it out. Basically, it was another small feature, quite similar to his previous movie, 'The Dreamers', probably too similar in fact. Ā Indeed, the whole thing was even more minimalist since it was just about 2 characters spending the whole movie in some basement. Still, I actually loved this young boy and his seemingly crazy idea. Basically, he is a teenage boy Ā who doesn't get along with anyone and, instead of going on a ski trip with his school, he decides to spent the whole week all by myself in his basement. Obviously, the guy really had some issues and, yet, I thought his plan was actually really neat since I have myself always had a rather difficult timeĀ to connect with other people. So far, it was working very well Ā for me but, then, they had to introduce a girl in the mix and that's when it started to fall apart. First of all, she wasn't some random girl but his half-sister who he barely Ā had any contact with but what really ruined the whole thing was the fact she was a junkie going cold turkey. It wasn't really interesting, I had already seen too many junkies doing this, above all, it had nothing to do with what happened before and,Ā for some reasons, this young anti-social boy started to bond with her fairly easily, too easily in my opinion. You could argue that they were both outcasts but, still, it didn't really work for me. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and I still think it is worth a look, especially if you're interested in Bertolucci's work.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 1 February 2016 12:41 (A review of The Hi-Lo Country)

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and maybe I should give it a second chance at some point. It is a rather obscure feature (I was only the 3rd listal members who has rated the damned thing) and, in fact, I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released. Back then, I thought it seemed really intriguing, it was directed by a good director (Stephen Frears) and there was a fine cast involved (Billy Crudup, Woody Harrelson, Patricia Arquette, PenĆ©lope Cruz) so I had some rather high expectations. Well, unfortunately, I turned out to be rather disappointing. I mean, it was rather well made, Iā€™ll give you that, but, at the end of the day, I never really cared about the story or the characters involved. Basically, it was some kind of post-modern Western taking place just after WWII which is something rather tricky to handle and while watching this, I couldnā€™t help thinking that Stephen Frears, even though a really talented and versatile director, was maybe not the best choice to direct this. Apparently, Sam Peckinpah did try to get this movie produced for years and I think It might have worked better with him. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 1 February 2016 11:00 (A review of Hi, Mom!)

As you may have noticed, Iā€™m a very obsessive movie watcher and one of my very first obsession was/is Robert De Niro. I just love this actor and I have been watching many of this movies during the last 20 years (I have seen 72 of them so far). However, since the beginning of this decade, he has been making about 3 or 4 movies a year and most of them were of a very dubious quality so Iā€™m not as fanatic as I used to be about his work but I still watch some of them from time to time. Anyway, even though De Niro did get his breakthrough thanks to ā€˜Mean Streetsā€™ directed by Martin Scorsese, in fact, before that he had actually worked 3 times with Brian De Palma. This was the 3rd one they made together at the time. To be honest, if it would have been directed by someone else and starring some unknown actor, Iā€™m pretty much I wouldnā€™t have bothered watching this flick. Still, I thought it was a decent watch. Indeed, it is basically an experimental and rather messy comedy, something typical of the time-period, and only therefore, I though it was quite intriguing. To conclude, even though it was nothing amazing, I thought it was not bad and it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Robert De Niro or in Brian De Palmaā€™s work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 1 February 2016 08:39 (A review of The Hangover: Part III)

To be honest, I have never really understood why ā€˜The Hangoverā€™ franchise turned out to be so popular. I mean, I have to admit it, the concept was decent but I never understood why, if you have a bunch of colorful characters having a very wild night in Las Vegas or in Bangkok, why would you bother show the day after, when all the fun is gone and the guys spend all their time to recover the damages and their senses? Anyway, at least, with this movie, they didnā€™t completely recycle the plot of the 1st movie but even so Iā€™m afraid it turned out to be even more underwhelming than the previous installment. Indeed, the main issue with this whole franchise is that, even though Alan was supposed to be hilarious, he is in fact most of the time completely obnoxious and, with this 3rd movie, it became so bad that his buddies of the Wolf Pack simply canā€™t stand him anymore and would rather have never met him. As a result, the whole thing is basically about Alan completely antagonizing his so-called ā€˜friendsā€™ and it was really cringe-inducing to watch. To conclude, it was pretty weak and I donā€™t think it is worth a look.Ā

A bad movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 31 January 2016 05:26 (A review of The Mexican)

I know, my rating might seem a little bit harsh for this movie but, in my opinion, I thought the whole thing was a just a joke and not a good one. Indeed, before this flick was released, there was a huge buzz about it since it was the first movie starring Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, two of the biggest stars in the world at the time. Eventually, it was a flop at the box-office so I didn't expect much from it but it was even worse than my wildest dreams. Indeed, basically, it was a very misguided action-comedy and I was seriously bored to death during the whole thing. Seriously, the plot was inane, the characters played by Pitt and Roberts were both really stupid and obnoxious and it was neither funny or entertaining at any point. Back in those days, Brad Pitt was still struggling about which movie project he should choose and it would take him a couple of years before he would become one of the wisest movie stars in the world (alongside his buddies Matt Damon and George Clooney). Anyway, eventually, at some point, after so many years, I decided to give the damned thing another shot and guess what? It was just as lame as I thought it was the first time around. To conclude, the whole thing is just a big waste of time and you should pretty much avoid it.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 31 January 2016 08:10 (A review of The 5th Wave)

Following the footsteps of Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley, ChloĆ« Grace Moretz decided she should also have her own franchise based on a Young Adult novel, which wasn't really a bad decision careerwise. The only point was that the whole thing turned out to be pretty weak, I'm afraid. However, I don't think that Moretz should be really blamed though. I mean, she was really charismatic and she did what she could with this material but there was not much that could be really done. Basically, the main thing that bothered me, except for the many plot-holes (how did the main character find out that the Others looked like humans? The kids were promised by the military that their parents Ā would come right after them. When they never showed up, why didn't they say or at least ask anything?), was the lack of development of the characters. In fact, while watching this, for some reasons, I kept thinking about 'The Walking Dead'. One of the most impressive thing about 'The Walking Dead' is that you get to see the impact the collapsing of civilization might have on our behavior and mental state. It is so well done and so convincing in this TV-show that, as a result, it is actually difficult to see some similar ideas developed so poorly in a different movie. To conclude, all the ingredients were there to create a decent tale but the whole thing was just really underwhelming and I don't think it is really worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 30 January 2016 06:56 (A review of Modigliani)

Since I had this movie for such a long time on DVD, Ā I thought Ā it was really time to watch the damned thing. Eventually, the first thing that amazes me about this movie are the high ratings it received on this website and on IMDb. I mean, seriously, even though I always had a weak spot for the genre of the biographical Ā tale of some famous artists, I thought this one was really weak, in fact, probably the weakest one I have ever seen. Where should I start? First of all, even though the characters mostly spoke English, they all delivered their dialogues in some various accents never consistent with the involved nationalities. Also, the fact that they would suddenly speak French or Italian for no real reason didn't help either. Concerning Andy Garcia, he did have the necessary good looks but he never managed to deliver the required intensity for such a tormented Ā character. However, he shouldn't be the only one to be blamed. Indeed, the directing was pretty weak, like the way they added Modigliani Ā as a kid to talk Ā to himself was a rather lame gimmick, the whole thing was either lifeless and too random anyway. At least, Elsa Zylberstein, who really looks like as if she came from a Modigliani painting, Ā was very well cast but that's Ā probably the only really positive thing I can say about this movie. To conclude, even though I have seen worse, I really didnā€™t like this movie and I donā€™t think it is worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 30 January 2016 08:34 (A review of The Place Beyond the Pines)

Following their critical success 'Blue Valentine', Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling decided to give it another shot with this movie which got a lot of buzz before its release. To be honest, even though I did like 'Blue Valentine', I thought it was slightly overrated but, here, they came up with something completely different which was pretty neat. Indeed, the most interesting thing about this movie was its peculiar structure. Basically, instead of using some flashbacks or some hyperlink gimmick, they basically gave us 3 different tales told chronologically but they were still linked somehow together making one intriguing story. Personally, I really enjoyed this construction and it was also a really interesting and unexpected approach to kill their top billing actor within 50 minutes. Still, I have to admit that this way of telling these stories also had its downside. Above all, even though those tales combined made for something really worthwhile, on their own, they didn't work so well. Basically, each time I was starting to get to know one of the characters, they would move towards another character and the biggest victim was definitely Eva Mendes. Indeed, even though she gave one of her best performances, she barely had anything to do here. To conclude, even though it wasn't a complete success, it was still a very strong drama with some solid performances and it is definitely worth a look.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 29 January 2016 12:14 (A review of Bad Boys)

Not to be confused with Michael Bay's directing debut , it is in fact a really obscure crime drama starring Sean Penn. I had seriously no idea what to expect from the damned thing but since I always had a weak spot for this actor, I thought I might as well check it out. For the actor, it was quite an important step in his career since it was the first time that he received top first billing following 2 supporting parts in respectively ā€˜Tapsā€™ and ā€˜Fast Times at Ridgemont Highā€™. Concerning the movie itself, to be honest, I was expecting something rather lame as most of the actors have to start somewhere and they very often start up in some cheap and rather weak productions. Well, I was actually quite surprised by this movie. Indeed, it is basically a really raw and realistic flick featuring a really strong performance by Sean Penn. Still, I have to admit that, without his involvement, Iā€™m not sure I would have really cared about the damned thing. Anyway, to conclude, even though it wasnā€™t really a masterpiece, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Sean Pennā€™s work.Ā

A classic

Posted : 9 years, 1 month ago on 28 January 2016 01:21 (A review of The Hustler)

It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. To be honest, before watching the damned thing, I was actually completely unaware of its reputation and I think I decided to give it a try just because the review on the TV magazine was really positive. Eventually, I was completely blown away by the whole thing and it turned out to be one of the best cinematic surprises I ever watched. First of all, for some reasons, I have always been fascinated by the pool game and by pool hustlers and this movie is just by far the best ever made dealing with this subject. Indeed, it looked gorgeous, Paul Newman gave one of his best performances and the whole thing was just really damned entertaining. Eventually, 25 years later, they would release a sequel directed by Martin Scorsese and starring both Paul Newman and Tom Cruise but while it turned out to be a decent watch, it never came near the greatness displayed in this flick, Iā€™m afraid. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it is actually one of my all-time favorites, I really loved this movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā
