An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 30 November 2015 04:50 (A review of Keeping the Faith)

At the end of the 90ā€™s, just at the beginning of his career, Edward Norton showed up back to back in ā€˜American History Xā€™ and ā€˜Fight Clubā€™ , two massive classics, and the guy was overnight already hailed as the best actor of his generation. Almost 20 years later, I have seen actually all his movies and, to be honest, in my opinion, Norton never really fulfilled those expectations. Anyway, at some point, like many other actors, he decided to direct as well and came up with this feature. Eventually, it didnā€™t get much a love but, since I was a huge fan of the guy back in those days, I probably gave this movie more credit than it actually deserved. Ā I mean, Ā the whole thing was really harmless and fairly entertaining but it never flies really high. Basically, even though it is a romantic comedy with a religious subject, it never becomes really deep enough to become truly remarkable. At the end of the day, you might wonder if Edward Norton actually enjoyed the experience since he never directed another movie afterwards. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

When I was a kid, I was a huge fan ofĀ Jean-Claude Van DammeĀ and I saw all the movies he made at the beginning of his career. Eventually, at around 14 years old, I started to get interested in other kind of movies and I discovered that his movies were not so great after all. Among his 'classics', this movie is neither his best ('Bloodsport'Ā remains by far his most interesting feature, at least, thatā€™s my opinion) or his worst, it is basically a typical Van Damme vehicle with a generic and predictable plot.Ā Anyway, at the end of the day, it was really similar to 'Bloodsport', maybe too similar explaining why I didnā€™t care much for it. At least, I have to admit that the Muscles from Brussels was pretty badass here. Eventually, they would make a whole bunch of sequels, none of them starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and starring instead Sasha Mitchell, a very lame Van Damme lookalike, and they were really awful (I canā€™t believe I have actually seen 2 of those sequelsā€¦ What a waste of time!). To conclude, I think it is fine if you are 12 years old and you want to watch some brainless action flick but, otherwise, you should probably watch something else instead.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 29 November 2015 11:11 (A review of Prisoners)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might rewatch it. I remember it quick well though, the first time around, since this movie had built up quite a reputation, I was really eager to check it out. First of all, I have to say that I'm usually not a huge fan of such thrillers because they rely too much on the usual tricks and gimmicks. Well, this one was really a different kind of ball game and it was easily the best movie I have seen in this genre for many years. Where should I start? First, it was emotionally so intense, you spent more than 2 hours with these characters and, at some point, it became pretty much a genuine nightmare. I mean, thanks to some stellar performances and some really solid writing, you get so close to the characters, not only the parents but also the detective looking for those girls, that it became so believable that you could feel their agony and despair. At some point, following this terrible predicament, one of the parents makes a terrible judgment call but how many parents, in the same situation wouldn't do the same? Following 'Incendies', it is another spellbinding thriller delivered by Denis Villeneuve who once again pushed the viewers in the darkest corners of the human mind and, once again, I will keep thinking about this flick for a long time. This first time around, the damned thing was so intense that I didnā€™t notice the speech of Melissa Leoā€™s character but it actually explains why she would inflict so much pain and this logic was actually quite terrifying. Anyway, to conclude, it was a daunting and terrific thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 29 November 2015 03:57 (A review of The Good Dinosaur)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out again. Back then, making up for 2014 when they didnā€™t release any movie, in 2015, we had the pleasure to see 2 Pixar productions. Eventually, 'Inside Out' turned out to be pretty amazing but, to be honest, I had my doubts concerning this 2nd feature. Indeed, I wondered if it would manage to impress me as well and, indeed, it turned out to be rather underwhelming. I mean, donā€™t misunderstand me, it was still fairly entertaining but it never reached the level of their numerous masterpieces. At least, I have to admit that the animation was once again mind-blowing and it was completely gorgeous to look at. Furthermore, Spot, the young boy, was also truly amazing and I really enjoyed the friendship between this boy and this dinosaur. Still, eventually, Ā I had a rather hard time to get what the whole thing was actually supposed to be about and I'm Ā not surprised that the production was difficult and that they delayed its release a few times. I mean, the whole concept seemed interesting as it was supposed to be about what the world would look like if the dinosaurs would have survived. Unfortunately, there was nothing really interesting about this alternative world. Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, apparently, at the end of the day, the dinosaurs would have been slightly more evolved than us, growing up some crops and managing their own cattle but, to be honest, it was all rather underwhelming. Anyway, to conclude, even it turned out to be one of Pixarā€™s weaker efforts, it was still a decent watch though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 28 November 2015 09:30 (A review of The Giver)

God, how many more Young Adult novels can you find to adapt on the screen? They keep making those movies when, in fact, out of 5 adaptations, maybe one will be actually fairly successful while the rest will pretty much crash and burn at the box-office and it was definitely the case for this movie. By now, I have become so bored by the genre. Especially, Ā in this case, it is always the same story: it is usually about a dystopian future and it is about a young boy or girl who decides to defy the status-quo. Actually, I felt bad for Jeff Bridges as it was apparently a pet project of his and he had been trying to have the movie made for nearly 20 years. I mean, it is not that it was completely worthless, Ā like always with these stories, there was actually some potential but, Ā even though they tell you that the main character has to overcome some great challenges, it is actually nothing challenging at all for the viewer and it all feels terribly generic and predictable. To conclude, I thought it was rather boring and I don't think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you're a fan of the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 28 November 2015 06:38 (A review of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996))

Even though it is probably not considered as one of the best animated features delivered by Disney, in fact, it is one of my favorites. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for their movies which actually tried to deviate from their usual formula and this one was really something else, thatā€™s for sure. First of all, the animation was simply gorgeous, especially the details on Paris and Notre Dame were just mind-blowing. Above all, it is by far their darkest movie, maybe the reason why it didnā€™t get much love when it was released, but certainly the reason why I thought it was so intriguing. In this darkness, I was also impressed by Frollo who was definitely a great character. Basically, he is easily one of their most sinister bad guys and he was pretty much a hateful racist with a sexual fantasy for a gypsy woman. Unfortunately, not everything did work though. Indeed, even though Quasimodo was well animated and I enjoyed the fact that he was so strong and a great climber, this character was eventually rather poorly developed. Indeed, he is not what you would call standard leading man material, it seems that they didnā€™t really know what to do with him so he pretty much ended up as the third wheel beside Phoebus and Esmeralda. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I believe it is probably one of Disney's most underrated features, Ā I really liked the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 28 November 2015 08:36 (A review of Mon idole)

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since I had this DVD for ages (more than 4 years in fact...), I thought it was really time to watch the damned thing. While watching the damned thing, I discovered that I actually didn't know at all what it was about and I think it took me at least 20 minutes to figure out what the hell this story was dealing with.Ā This was already not a very good sign, I'm afraid.. Indeed, it displayed a general clumsiness from the makers and it is not surprising that this movie was a directing debut, in this case, for Guillaume Canet.Ā Basically, at first, I thought it was about what happens behind the scenes during an averageĀ TV show which sounded rather promising but, unfortunately, it was actually about some weird scheme developed by a rich TV producer and his wife. Well, when I finally knew what was the concept, to be honest, I didn't like it much and I thought it was actually rather lame. Still, the actors were not bad at all and it was especially pretty neat to see Diane Kruger just when she started her career, a few years before she had her international breakthrough with 'Troy'. Anyway, to conclude, even though the whole thing didn't really work and was sometimes even rather misguided, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch though and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.Ā

A classic

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 27 November 2015 09:33 (A review of The Kid)

Even though Charles Chaplin had been directing many movies as far back as 1914, I actually consider this movie his official directing debut since it was his first full length feature. Anyway, back then, when it was released it was obviously a tremendous critical and commercial success. Back in those days, Chaplin was already a big player thanks to the success of his marvelous short movies but with this new long format, he was clearly displaying his ambition to reach some new creative heights. In my opinion, he was still experimenting how far he could go with the Tramp so I don't think it was as good as his later work such as 'Modern Times' or 'The Great Dictator' but it doesn't change the fact that it was yet another enchanting movie with some hilarious bits but with some social consciousness as well.Ā Jackie Coogan who played the title character was also pretty impressive and became in fact the first major child star in the movie business. To conclude, even though it might not be one of his best movies, it is still a great classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Charles Chaplinā€™s work.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 26 November 2015 09:35 (A review of Snow White )

The main reason I wanted to watch this movie was because it was included to the 2014 version of the book '1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die'. To be honest, it was probably the most surprising and obscure addition for that particular year but since it was on TV, I was quite eager to record it and check it out. Eventually, only a week after I got my hands on the damned thing, I discovered that it was already removed from the 2015 edition. Anyway, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Eventually, they pretty much used the same gimmick as in 'The Artist' by making a black and white mute feature just like at the beginning of the 20th century. To be honest, even though it is a cute gimmick, Ā I canā€™t say I'm huge fan though but it was still a decent watch. Furthermore, even though it was supposed to be loosely based on Snow White, Ā it was only after maybe 1 hour of running time that it actually started to resemble the timeless tale but I'm not sure if it was a bad thing after all. Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was not bad and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 26 November 2015 11:07 (A review of Kika)

Nowadays Pedro Almodovar is still considered as the most important Spanish director but, back in the 90ā€™s, his specialty was some rather extravagant dramedies involving some rather colorful characters. This movie was basically one of them and, even though it was not bad at all, it wasnā€™t really one of his best. PenĆ©lope Cruz was not yet his muse back in those days and, at the time, it was Victoria Abril who seemed to inspire the Spanish master. Indeed, it was the 3rd movie directed by Almodovar starring Victoria Abril (following ā€˜Ā”Ɓtame!ā€™ and ā€˜Tacones lejanosā€™) but, in my opinion, Ā it was the weakest they made. I mean, Ā pretty much like the rest of Almodovarā€™s work, it was rather over the top and the characters were borderline obnoxious. As a result,Ā  I had a rather hard time to get into this story and to care about what the characters were going through. Still, he is and remains an artist since those movies have such a specific flavor and the guy basically created his own genre which is pretty remarkable. To conclude, even though it didnā€™t really work for me, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Almodovarā€™s work.
