A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 5 December 2015 08:07 (A review of The Sum of Us)

It was yet another movie that I had on dvd for so long so I thought it really was time to watch the damned thing. To be honest, it is a rather obscure Australian production but since I have a weak spot for Russell Crowe, I thought I might as well check it out. Well,  even though the focus was obviously on homosexuality and we manage to deal or not with it, I was actually more impressed by this father-son relationship.  Indeed, I have never such a great relationship before and, to be honest, it might have been too good to true but it was certainly touching and charming to behold. I also enjoyed the way Crowe played this gay man. Indeed, even though he fancies men, he managed to avoid the usual stereotypes and  the guy hasn't lost any of his masculanity which was really refreshing. Unfortunately, the directing wasn't really strong,  in my opinion. For example, it was obvious that the kitchen was in fact a set and not in an actual house, I had never seen this before and it was rather embarassing. Furthermore,  the last act involving a rather random and tragic event didn’t really add much. Anyway,  even though it wasn’t really great, I thought it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look.

It was another really obscure feature but since I had this DVD for ages, I thought it was really time to watch the damned thing. Well, even though the subject was really interesting and the whole thing really did have some potential, it didn't really work out very well. Basically, it is one of these hyperlink features where a whole bunch of stories are loosely linked together. Well, I always had a weak spot for the genre but, to be honest, I think this one displayed the weakest structure I have ever seen. I mean, if you took all the tales separately, they were actually all really good and most of them could have worked fine as a stand-alone but they were poorly put together. Indeed, the only connection they had was that they were dealing either with guns or violence in general and this connection was just really too thin to work. On top of that, with a rather short running time (not even 90 minutes), there was no way they could manage to properly developed each stories. The biggest victim was Donald Sutherland who played a gun shop owner as this character seemed at first really interesting but they didn't do anything at all with this character after all. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it was an interesting watch though and it is actually worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 4 December 2015 09:13 (A review of Jumanji)

If I recall it correctly, I actually saw this movie in the movie theater when it was released. Anyway, even though this movie doesn't have a really good reputation (Roger Ebert didn't like it at all for example), I always had a weak spot for this flick and it is definitely a guilty pleasure for me. Indeed, I always thought that the concept was pretty cool and, in my opinion, it was fairly well handled here. Of course, at the end of the day, it was still nothing really mind-blowing but I thought that the special effects were quite convincing and I enjoyed the whole chaos created by the plot. I thought also that this chaos was a good match with Robin Williams’s hysterical blend of humor. On a side note, back in those days, Kirsten Dunst was still a child and she had managed to have a pretty steady career since then. Anyway, I don't know, Roger Ebert criticized how messy it was and how young kids must have been frightened by the whole thing but I thought it was actually a fun mess with some rather impressive special effects which are still pretty neat 20 years later. To conclude, I thought it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 3 December 2015 09:45 (A review of The Faculty)

It had been a while since I had seen this movie so I was quite eager to check it out again. In fact, I forgot that the screenplay for this movie was actually written by Kevin Williamson, the guy who also wrote 'Scream', one of the most influential movies released in the 90's. Anyway,  one thing really enjoyable about Robert Rodriguez is that, in contrary to his best buddy Quentin Tarantino, the guy is definitely not pretentious and it is really obvious in his movies, especially this one. Indeed, sure, it is nothing really amazing but it was never meant to be ground-breaking and I thought it was actually a decent horror-SF feature. Basically, it pretty much follows the rules of the genre but, just like in 'Scream', the characters were actually pretty much aware of those rules which was pretty neat. I also liked the fact that this high-school was rather dull and almost lugubrious and even though all the characters were really stereotypical,  they were actually fairly entertaining. There was also a really solid cast (Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, Clear DuVall, Salma Hayek,  Robert Patrick,  Famke Janssen,  Jon Stewart). To conclude, even though it might not be one of the most famous movies directed by Robert Rodriguez, I actually think it is one of his better directing efforts and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 3 December 2015 12:33 (A review of Mean Girls)

Looking back to this movie, it seems as if it has been made ages ago, when in fact, it was released only a decade ago. Back in those days, Lindsay Lohan was one of the most popular teen idols and she seemed to be on the verge of a very successful career. Well, while I watching this with my step-daughter at the time, we didn’t really expect that she would become first a wild party animal and then a genuine train wreck completely out of control.  Eventually, it is actually Lohan’s co-stars, Rachel McAdams  and Amanda Seyfried , who both managed to become some of the most successful actresses of their generation (it is even more remarkable for Seyfried considering how shallow her character was in her acting debut). Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though it was nothing really amazing, I have to admit it that it was a decent watch and probably one of the best high-school comedies ever made. Indeed, basically, it still follows the usual formula without being really revolutionary but the jokes were decent, the characters  were quite funny and the whole thing was just plain entertaining. To conclude, this movie will probably be remembered as the last decent movie starring Lindsay Lohan but I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

To be honest, I wasn't exactly dying to watch this movie but one of my colleagues actually gave me this DVD so I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, even though it was a decent watch, I can’t say I was really blown away by the whole thing though. Sure, it was a well made and fairly spectacular epic medieval tale but I'm afraid it was just really too slow for my taste. I mean, I don't mind when a movie almost reaches 3 hours, as long as it has something interesting to say, but, in this case, I had a feeling that they were dragging the whole thing out for no good reasons except to make it more epic. Still, Charlton Heston, after playing Ben-Hur, Moses, and fighting some talking apes, was able to portray this time a legendary Spanish knight and the guy certainly delivered the goods once again. Concerning Sophia Loren, to be honest, I have to admit that I'm not really familiar with her work but, even though she did look voluptuous, she didn't really convince me. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn’t really impress me, it was still not bad at all and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 2 December 2015 01:44 (A review of Macbeth)

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I’m a huge fan of Roman Polanski’s work, I was really eager to check it out. Basically, it was another rather obscure movie delivered by this great master and it was apparently barely seen when it was released. Eventually, the most striking thing about  this film was probably the rather distressful circumstances during which it was made. Indeed, Roman Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by Charles Manson just three years before making this film and this was the first movie directed by Polanski following this tragic event. It is believed that due to this traumatic event, Polanski developed the story to be a much more violent representation of Shakespeare's play and, indeed, you probably never see again such a violent adaptation of Shakespeare's work. Eventually, it was a huge flop but I still found it quite interesting, like anything else coming from this director. Indeed, those Shakespeare adaptations can be rather dull but this one, thanks to Polanski's gory vision, became something quite unique, I think it is a really interesting flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 2 December 2015 11:51 (A review of Killing Zoe)

Many people tend to forget it but ‘Pulp Fiction’ was actually co-written by Roger Avary who used to be a very good friend of Quentin Tarantino. Eventually, while Tarantino became one of the most famous directors in the world, Roger Avary managed to direct in total only 2 movies during the last 2 decades  (he did write a few more movies though). Anyway, ever since I heard about this flick, I always wanted to check it out and, eventually, it was one of the first DVDs I ever bought when I got my first DVD player years ago. Eventually, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was a decent watch. Indeed, the story was rather generic but I enjoyed the bleak mood and there was a very nice cast involved (Eric Stoltz, Julie Delpy, Jean-Hugues Anglade). Eventually, it would take almost 10 years for Roger Avary to come up with another directing effort, the even better and terribly underrated ‘The Rules of Attraction’.  Unfortunately, since then, this promising director didn’t make any other movie which is too bad. To conclude, even though it might not have been a masterpiece, I thought it was not bad at all and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

[Link removed - login to see]

When was the last time that Spike Lee has made something really worthwhile? I guess, it was already 10 years ago with ‘Inside Man’ and all his movies since then have been some critical and commercial failures. It’s too bad because I always had a weak spot for this director. On the other hand, I have to admit that all his early movies were not always some real home-runs and this movie is a perfect example. In fact, it’s not it was really bad, it’s just that it never really fulfilled all its potential and there were many things to enjoyed here. First of all,  it is rather weird to see Wesley Snipes in a serious drama after all these terrible cheap-ass direct-to-dvd action flicks but in fact, the guy actually started his career in such movies. Anyway, the main issue with this flick is that even though it is dealing with an interesting subject (a love affair with a black man and white woman) and it was supposed to shake the status quo, at the end of the day, it was still rather stereotypical and generic after all. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely  worth a look, especially if you are interested in Spike Lee’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 3 months ago on 30 November 2015 04:50 (A review of Keeping the Faith)

At the end of the 90’s, just at the beginning of his career, Edward Norton showed up back to back in ‘American History X’ and ‘Fight Club’ , two massive classics, and the guy was overnight already hailed as the best actor of his generation. Almost 20 years later, I have seen actually all his movies and, to be honest, in my opinion, Norton never really fulfilled those expectations. Anyway, at some point, like many other actors, he decided to direct as well and came up with this feature. Eventually, it didn’t get much a love but, since I was a huge fan of the guy back in those days, I probably gave this movie more credit than it actually deserved.  I mean,  the whole thing was really harmless and fairly entertaining but it never flies really high. Basically, even though it is a romantic comedy with a religious subject, it never becomes really deep enough to become truly remarkable. At the end of the day, you might wonder if Edward Norton actually enjoyed the experience since he never directed another movie afterwards. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
