An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 20 October 2011 10:29 (A review of The Mummy)

Honestly, beforehand, I didn't expect much from this flick but I always had a weak spot for adventure movies, especially the Indiana Jones franchise, so I thought I should check it out. To start with, I haven't seen the original version but, from what I have heard, is that, except for the title, there is actually nothing in common between those 2 movies. Anyway, like I said before, I didn't really have some high expectations for this flick but I thought it was not bad at all. Indeed, it is basically a well made and entertaining adventure flick, no more, no less. Honestly, I really don't get the appeal of Brendan Fraser with his goofball face but I guess he was allright here. Better than him and definitely stealing the show were Rachel Weisz and John Hannah who managed to find the perfect tone for their performances. Furthermore, there were loads of action scenes and I thought the whole thing was rather well made and actually pretty entertaining. To conclude, it is of course not a masterpiece but I think it remains a decent and entertaining blockbuster and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 20 October 2011 09:59 (A review of Separate Lies)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection or movies to choose from but, as a result, I have become slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was starring Emily Watson. Indeed, she must be one of the most underrated actress I know and I try to watch most of her movie whenever I get the opportunity. This time around, she was working with another underrated actor, Tom Wilkison, and together, they gave some really solid performances. I aslo enjoyed the story which was a realistic thriller/detective story with some touch of Agatha Christie. Indeed, it dealt very well with such themes like guilt, punishment, love and infidelity. I must say that the story did loose its focus towards the end and I thought that some actions of the characters were rather plot-driven but I still enjoyed it very much. To conclude, even though it is a rather obscure watch, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 20 October 2011 08:50 (A review of Stealth)

To be honest, it didn’t expect much from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. I think it is quite obvious that they wanted here to go for a modern version of 'Top Gun' (which I already didn't really like in the first place). Well, their first mistake was to set the movie in the future and, as a result, they gave us this very cheap and cheesy looking introduction and those planes were far from being convincing. Furthermore, the 3 lead characters where just so shallow, it was just rather pathetic : the hot white guy who is of course a hotshot, the hot white girl who is secretly in love with the white guy and the black playboy smartass who of course gets killed in the proceedings. The story was actually even worse as it was just a boring mess. On the bright side, I have to admit that there were a few neat action scenes. The funny thing was that the whole thing actually had some potential if they developed more the implications of a robot-AI controlling an army jet but, of course, they were not interesting in this concept. Anyway, to conclude, it was a really average special-effects extravaganza and it is not really worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 19 October 2011 10:22 (A review of Eden Lake)

I heard it was pretty hardcore and during the first seconds, they give you some quick flashes about what will happened so I was warned but, still, what an ordeal! There were here some really violent sadistic gore scenes and the movie was slightly going towards the torture porn (such as 'Hostel', 'Saw', ...) but they still managed to stay away from that genre. The main difference was that the whole plot was actually pretty realistic and the story described something that could actually take place which was pretty scary when you think about it. Furthermore, the characters were rather well written and I could easily identify with them. Kelly Reilly and Michael Fassbender (one of the fast rising stars nowaday), both delivered some strong and convincing performances. The 'kids' were terrific as well, in every sense you can possibly imagine. So, I liked this flick but I'm not sure if I can recommend it. Indeed, the whole thing was pretty hardcode and, at the end, I even felt a little bit nauseous, so if you are sensitive, I would advise to avoid this one. To conclude, I think it was a a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you have a strong stomach and even more if you like the genre.

A classic

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 19 October 2011 09:53 (A review of Out of the Past (1947))

Since this movie had a really stellar reputation, I was really eager to check it out. Well, it is probably the most essential film noir ever made. Indeed, you basically had all the usual trademarks : the raincoats, the hats, the omnipresent cigarettes, the gansters, the detective, the femmes fatale and the double-crossing intrigues. Considering the directing, I saw as well a couple of other movies directed by Jacques Tourneur (‘Cat People’, ‘I Walked with a Zombie’) but, even though these movies were decent, this feature was definitely much more impressive. Seriously, when you watch the damned thing, it makes you wish that they still made such black and white movies. Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas were just awesome but Jane Greer and Rhonda Fleming were both very good as well. I have to admit that the story was actually rather convoluted but, for once, it didn’t really bother me. Indeed, it is inherent to the genre and the dialogues were such a treat, every 5 seconds, those characters were delivering some amazing one-liners. To conclude, it is a real classic which really deserves its reputation, I really enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 18 October 2011 02:41 (A review of The King)

I remember as if it was yesterday. Back then, when I saw 'Amores Perros' in the theater, I was really impressed by Gael Garcia Bernal and I wondered what will happen with this young and promising actor. Now, we are 10 years later but he unfortunately never really broke through in my opinion. At least, for the mainstream audience. Indeed, he still did take part in some very interesting indie flicks and this movie is a perfect example. Indeed, it is a little movie, quite unknown and underrated but Bernal gave here quite an amazing performance. As his sparring partner, there was against him another amazing and underrated actor, William Hurt who did a great job as well. Furthermore, the directing was really effective and the story was rather messed up (not in a bad way though), heartbreaking and actually rather fascinating. Basically, it is rather bleak drama with some really screwed up characters and if you only like happy endings and a story which doesn’t conclude with some loose ends, you should probably avoid this one. Anyway, to conclude, in my opinion, it is an underrated and rather obscure gem and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A classic

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 18 October 2011 10:19 (A review of Julius Caesar (1953))

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie since I’m a huge fan of Marlon Brando, I was quite eager to check it out. Of course, towards the end of his career, Brando did show up in some really horrendous flicks but we shouldn't forget that, at the beginning of his career, he was involved in some real classics. First of all, I was actually really surprised when I discovered that this flick was only his 4th movie. Indeed, when he was on the screen, giving these awesome Shakesparian dialoges, it felt like as if he had been doing this for decades. It may seem that Marlon Brando was the big star but you  actullay  had here an impressive ensemble cast (James Mason, John Gielguld and more) and they all gave some very strong performances. Eventually, even though I did like the damned thing, it didn't completely blow me away since there was nothing much going on here except these very long and heavy dialogues written by the great Shakespeare. I must say that I really prefer those classics adaptions than the modern ones which more or less kept the original dialogues (‘Romeo+Juliet’, ‘O’, ‘Hamlet’, 'Macbeth',,...). Anyway, to conclude, it is a real classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An overrated movie

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 18 October 2011 07:00 (A review of Braveheart)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. In fact, the first time I saw it was in the theater when it was released more than 20 years ago. Well, to be honest, even though it has a rather stellar reputation, I always had some rather mix feelings about this flick. I mean, I have to admit it, it is in fact quite entertaining but I don't think it was such a masterpiece though. Above all, it could have been more interesting if they gave us a more balanced portrait of William Wallace and the English. Indeed, all the English characters were pretty mean and King Edward I was so evil that he pretty much became a cartoonish villain. Concerning William Wallace, they tried to convince the viewers that the guy was a simple average Scotsman but he had been abroad, spoke several languages, he was a great warrior and apparently an expert military strategist. Hardly what you could call an 'average' dude. Furthermore, the fact that Mel Gibson was maybe 20 years too old to play this character and the fact that the whole thing was seriously inaccurate historically didn't help much either. Finally, pretty much all the scenes involving his relationship with a French princess were just so far-fetched and ridiculous. Anyway, even if I’m not a huge fan, it is still worth a look though since there were some impressive battle scenes and, if you like Mel Gibson, you should definitely watch it but, in my humble opinion, it must be one of the most overrated movies ever made.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 17 October 2011 12:41 (A review of Grey Owl)

Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect from this flick, it is indeed a rather unknown movie starring Pierce Brosnan and directed by the great Richard Attenborough but I thought I should give it a try. Personally, I thought it was a very interesting story but I'm not so sure if Pierce Brosnan was really the best choice for this character. I mean, at the end of the movie, you understand why they picked him but I can't help thinking that, with another actor, it would have worked better. Still, there were some interesting thoughts about this conflict between Modern life and Alternative ways of living, and also about the struggle about finding your own identity. When the whole thing ended, I have to admit it, it turned out to be one helll of a true story, too preposterous to be fictional but, somehow, they never really managed to exploit its full potential. So, basically, from a great story, they made a rather average but still interesting flick. Concerning Brosnan, you have to give the guy some credit for trying such a challenging part and he almost pulled it off. Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was an intriguing true story and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you want to see Pierce Brosnan in something completely different.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 17 October 2011 10:58 (A review of Ponyo)

Nowadays, almost all the animated movies which come out are CGI animated. One of the few who's still holding strong is Hayao Miyazaki. Indeed, this guy is the living proof that hand-drawn animated features are still worth it and that they can be damned gorgeous to look at. Seriously, only just to 'see' this movie was already definitely worth a look. Indeed, you had here so many beautiful colors, awesome details and a marvelous combination of realism and fantasy. Considering the story itself, I thought it was quite enjoyable, even though it was not as strong as 'Spirited Away' which still remains by far my favorite movie from Miyazaki. Unfortunately, as usual with this director, the main character was in my opinion rather bland and uninsteresting but, on the other hand, the title character, Ponyo, was quite delightful. On a side note, I did watch this movie with my 5 year old daughter, thinking it would be a nice watch for her since it seemed to be targeted towards very young children. That was actually a mistake since it is actually more suitable for kids older than 10 years old. Anyway, to conclude, it was a gorgeous animated feature and, even though it didn’t completely blow me away, I still enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are looking for something else than the usual CGI animated flick.
