An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 12 September 2011 08:29 (A review of The Rebound)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection or movies to choose from but, as a result, I have became slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones . Indeed, I always had a weak spot for this actress, I actually thinks she is quite charming but she didn't make so many movies back then and most of them were seriously quite forgettable. Unfortunately, this flick was not an exception. I mean, I'm a really a sucker for this kind of romantic-comedies, especially when they are dealing with an older woman falling in love with a younger man (it has probably to do with the fact that my wife is 11 years older than me). Unfortunately, it took forever to take off, with some awkward and pathetic 'funny' scenes. Eventually, when they finally get together, the whole thing started to got better and there were even some nice and touching scenes. But then again, they had to break up for some really bogus reasons which was just so annoying. Towards the end, they did try to recover the damage done but I wasn't really convinced. To conclude, it was a very average romantic-comedy and it is not really worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 11 September 2011 01:01 (A review of The Great Waldo Pepper)

To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from the damned thing but since I always had a weak spot for Robert Redford, I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, way before ā€˜Top Gun’, they actually made this vintage flick about the aviation. Well, even though this movie was never as famous as the classic action flick starring Tom Cruise, in fact, I thought it was actually much better. Indeed, first of all, I really liked the way they gave us a good look at the USA during the 20's. Obviously, Robert Redford was, as usual, very charming and the guy gave another solid performance. In fact, I believe that most actors would have been rather ridiculous in this role. Concerning the story, I have to admit that it was nothing really original but I thought it was entertaining enough. What I really enjoyed is that they managed to show how those guys were daring and courageous but also at the same time rather ridiculous and childhish. To conclude, even though I don’t think it was anything really amazing, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre of if you are interested in Robert Redford’s work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 10 September 2011 07:18 (A review of Fierce People)

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since there was really interesting cast involved (Anton Yelchin, Diane Lane, Donald Sutherland, Chris Evans, Kristen Stewart, Paz de la Huerta), I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, it was a typical quirky indie comedy but they tried eventually Ā to become more serious and, at some point, it became more a drama. Anyway, the plot was not really mindblowing and there was a collection of weird and excentric characters. Some of them were really neat, like Anton Yelchin and Donald Sutherland but I wasn't so convinced by Diane Lane. I mean, she was charming as usual but even though she started as a junkie, whithin 10 minutes, she became a standard mother and her drug past was never to be noticed in her performance ever again. In my opinion, one of the main issue with this flick was that there were way too many characters and most of them were actually barely developped. For example, Chris Evans was pretty interesting but we never really learned anything about his character. It's too bad since Yelchin and Sutherland were very good and the story had some potential. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look especially if you like this genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 10 September 2011 04:38 (A review of Dreamscape)

This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Dennis Quaid. At least, this movie was dealing with a very interesting subject. Indeed, dreams are just fascinating and they represent a limitless source of inspiration for film makers. However, even though this flick was dealing with dreams, it was definitely not on the level of something like 'Inception'. Basically, the plot and directing were really average, the dialogues were even laughable and even the music was way too cheesy (I was rather stunned when I discovered afterwards that it was composed by Academy Award winner Maurice Jarre). To make things worse, Kate Capshaw and Dennis Quaid both gave some very poor performances and Quaid was really not convincing as some kind of telepathic genius. Fortunately, the great Max von Sydow can't do no wrong and was alright here. Actually, there were some interesting ideas here and I did like the dreams sequences but, basically, it was a movie dealing with a serious subject but it refused to take this subject seriously and the end result was therefore just completely underwhelming. To conclude, it is not really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 10 September 2011 03:51 (A review of Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles)

This movie was a perfect example. Indeed, even though, when I was a kid, I thought that that ā€˜Crocodile Dundee’ was pretty cool, that’s a movie didn’t grow old well at all. With this in mind, it is rather bewildering that, 13 years after the last previous sequel, they still came up with a 3rd instalment when, in fact, I’m pretty sure nobody was waiting for another outback adventure. I don’t know maybe they thought it was really necessary to round up the trilogy. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much but it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. I mean, the plot was pretty weak and completely predictable but Crocodile Dundee still remain a charming character. Eventually, it was average , rather harmless and obviously aimed to a young audience but if you are older than 13 years old, it is not really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 9 September 2011 12:49 (A review of Addicted to Love)

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick. I mean, I have to admit it, I do have a weak spot for Meg Ryan but I have never been really wild about Matthew Broderick. Basically, I’ll give you that, the guy has done a few interesting movies in his career but most of the time, I find him just too bland and not really interesting. Anyway, here they were working together in a romantic-comedy (did Meg Ryan ever really tried something else?!?) and the result was unfortunately rather underwhelming. I mean, Meg Ryan was quite charming, as usual, but the story was not really entertaining whatsoever and I really had a hard time to care about the characters or what they were going through. Apparently, they tried to make some kind of sassy and edgy romantic-comedy but the characters were more annoying than entertaining. There was a also this terribly stereotypical and very obnoxious French character played by Tcheky Karyo (a French actor who used to show up quite often in Hollywood productions) and I guess it didn’t help me to enjoy this movie a little more, in the contrary. To conclude, it is basically a really average romantic-comedy and it is not really worth a look, even if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 9 September 2011 09:56 (A review of The Proposal)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it was a big success at the box-office, I was quite curious to check this flick. First of all, I always had a weak spot for Sandra Bullock and I really enjoyed saying this actress playing an uptight bitch. Indeed, she did it so well and it was really refreshing to see her doing something else that her usual roles. Unfortunately, during the last 20 minutes, Ā her character suddenly completely changed and became one of her typically really nice girls which was just so boring. Concerning Ryan Reynolds, I haven't much to say about the guy. I mean, he was alright and rather funny most of the time but his character was not really interesting. Something rather surprising about this movie was that most of the characters were well played and rather believable, especially the supporting parts. Of course, there were a few stupid and awkward scenes (the dog/eagle thing, the exotic dancer, the indian chanting dance). To conclude, even though it was nothing really original and even though it was really predictable, I thought it was still a well made and entertaining romantic-comedy and if you like the genre, it is definitely worth a look.

A bad movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 8 September 2011 09:47 (A review of Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties)

Honestly, I didn’t like ā€˜Garfield’ at all. I mean, even if the cat was rather well made from a technical point of view, the plot was terribly lame and had nothing to do with the strip-book whatsoever (a rather awesome strip-book as a matter of fact). Anyway, if I didn’t like this sequel, why should I bother watch the sequel? Well, I guess, since it was on TV and I just love wasting my time watching some major garbage, I just ended up watching this flick. Another thing that bothered me is that, in 'Zombieland', Bill Murray complained that the only movie that really embarrassed him was 'Garfield'. I'm pretty sure that they didn't made this up in the movie but maybe they did. The question is why would he bother even making this sequel?!? Ok, there is, as always, the money factor, I guess, but still. Anyway, I watched it with my step-son (I know, it is a very lame excuse...) but I thought the whole thing was just plain boring. I mean, at this point, there was almost nothing left from the original comic-book in here and the whole thing was pretty much worthless. To conclude, it is pretty bad and not worth a look, except maybe if you are under 13 years old.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 7 September 2011 07:03 (A review of Bay of Angels)

Basically, it is once again one of those really obscure French movies which almost no one has seen here on Listal. Indeed, it is one of those unknow/underrated gem and I'm pretty sure everybody has forgot about it but it's a real shame since I really loved this movie. Until today, I never really realized that it had been directed by Jacques Demy. I have seen Demy’s more famous features (ā€˜Les parapluies de Cherbourg’ and ā€˜Les demoiselles de Rochefort’) but I never really cared about those. He did direct this flick before those two and I thought it was much darker and simply much better. Indeed, it is one of those fascinating stories about gambling (a favorite theme of mine, especially when it is well handled like here) and, actually, I do believe it is one of the best movies about the subject. Indeed, most of the glamour is removed and what remains is the sadness, the loneliness and general sorrow involving the gambling habit. On top of that, there were 2 very interesting characters thanks to the amazing performances by Jeanne Moreau and Claude Mann. To conclude, even though it is a really obscure flick, it is actually really good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

A disappointing movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 7 September 2011 03:13 (A review of Angel of Mine)

This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Sandrine Bonnaire and Catherine Frot. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect from this flick but, basically, it was one of those typical French thrillers. Indeed, there was no chase, shootings or explosions like you would get in your average Hollywood thriller and it was more based on the mood and the characters like those good old thrillers directed by Hitchcock. Furthermore, Catherine Frot and Sandrine Bonnaire were both quite convincing and they gave some solid performances. Unfortunately, even though the story was very intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat, the end, on the other hand, turned out ot be rather weak. Indeed, there was a very annoying and disappointing twist at the end and it kind of ruined the whole thing for me and the fact that they added the note 'based on a true story' didn't help whatsoever. Anyway, to conclude, even though it turned out to be a rather underwhelming thriller, I thought it was well made and it is still worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.
