An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 10 February 2011 11:22 (A review of Balto)

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, it is considers as many viewers as one of the most underrated animated movies ever made so I had some rather high expectations towards the damned thing. Well, to be honest, I really had a hard time to care about this movie and I don’t think I have ever seen such an overrated cult-classic before. Seriously, I thought the whole thing was actually pretty lame. Indeed, everything going from the animation, the characters and the jokes was just really average at the best. Some fans argue that it flopped because it was released around the time as ‘Toy Story’ but I think it is a joke to compare such a timeless classic with this flick. At least, I have to admit it, it was actually based on a rather amazing true story and the whole thing probably had actually some potential but I don’t think they really managed to deliver something really compelling with this. Anyway, to conclude, I really didn't like this movie and I don’t think it is really worth a look, even if you are a fan of animated features like me.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 9 February 2011 11:13 (A review of Bride Flight)

I remember it very well, when this movie was released, in the Netherlands, it turned to be pretty successful and that's the main reason why I wanted to check it out. Basically, back then, they made a big fuss because Rutger Hauer, the most famous Dutch actor ever, was finally starring again in a Dutch production after several decades but, honestly, he was in the movie for maybe 10 minutes so you shouldn't watch this flick because of him. Anyway, concerning the movie itself, I thought it was not bad but, to be honest, it wasn’t really great either. I mean, I did enjoy the directing and the actors did a decent job but some parts of the story felt overly dramatic to my taste. I don't know, maybe there was something missing in the story to make it truly compelling to watch which is something I unfortunately come across too often when watching Dutch movies. On one hand, they don't always lack the ambition but, on the other hand, they are very often way too bland to become truly remarkable. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it was a decent drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Dutch movies.

An interesting failure

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 8 February 2011 11:09 (A review of War of the Worlds)

When this movie came out, the critics were so bad, I wasn't expecting much from it but I'm always curious about Spielberg's movies. Eventually, I must admit I was actually rather pleasantly surprised. Of course, it was not a masterpiece and it was not even a really good movie but I thought it was actually damned entertaining. Indeed, the visuals were great and there were some awesome special effects, something that can be expected with Steven Spielberg. The best about this movie was that it was really suspenful, almost scary. There was a great mood and I was completely on the edge of my seat during the whole thing ... until the end which was unfortunately really weak. The first time I saw it, it felt rather weird because the rest of the movie was very well balanced and quite spellbinding to watch, whereas the ending felt rushed and really half-baked. In my opinion, the movie should have been 30 minutes, maybe one hour longer, or maybe it wouldn't have changed a thing, I don't know. But, except for the ending, I sincerely believe it is some very solid entertainment with a believable performance by Tom Cruise as a blue collar working guy who unwillingly becomes a hero when in fact he is scared sh*tless as much as his own kids. To conclude, in my opinion, you should just sit back, have some popcorn, enjoy the show, and if you don't expect Bergman, there is a good chance you end up actually enjoying it.

An interesting failure

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 8 February 2011 10:42 (A review of What Dreams May Come)

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Robin Williams, I thought I might as well give it a try. It was pretty much a flop when it was first released but it doesn’t mean that it was actually completely worthless. To start with, I have to admit it, the title was just way too cheesy. Furthermore, the main issue, in my opinion, like with many other dramas starring Robin Williams, even though the intentions are good, eventually, those movies are rather manipulative and they basically hit you like a sledge hammer with their sentimentality. Still, it remains an intriguing picture because it is not very often that you have the opportunity to see a Hollywood picture dealing with Death as a concept and what it means for us, human-beings. Indeed, in spite of its flaws, it is a very interesting study about Death and, above all, it was visually quite impressive (it even won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the time which was definitely deserved). To conclude, even though it doesn’t succeed on every level, this movie is still visually really striking, it develops some interesting ideas and, therefore, I think it is definitely worth a look.

An interesting failure

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 8 February 2011 09:58 (A review of Tideland)

Since I have a weak spot for Gilliam's work, I was definitely eager to check this flick. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it much and, honestly, I thought it was rather bleak and creepy... I mean, I have seen some tough sh*t through the years but this one was actually pretty hardcore. You don't believe me? In the first 10 minutes, the mother of the main character (a 12 year old girl) dies of overdose and then in the following 15 minutes, she helps her father (played by Jeff Bridges) to shoot heroine and he also dies of overdose and until the end of the movie, this little girl spends a good chunk of her time talking to her dead rotting corpse of a father... I can't say I didn't like this movie because the actors were really good and Gilliam is a damned fine director and it shows on the picture but he spent actually all his time in this movie basically antagonizing his audience that it made it impossible for me to really enjoy this movie in any way. Eventually, it is definitely an acquired taste and even though it was not bad at all, I definitely cannot recommend it and you should watch it at your own risk.

An interesting failure

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 8 February 2011 09:40 (A review of The Siege)

Since this movie doesn’t really have a stellar reputation, I wasn’t really expecting much but since there was a pretty neat cast, I still wanted to check it out. Eventually, I was actually really surprised by this flick and I’m rather amazed that it doesn’t get more credit nowadays. Indeed, I have seen it again like a year ago and it stroke me how accurate it was in the way it depicted a terrorist attack. On top of that , it was even more scary that the movie was made 3 years before the attacks on the WTC. Apparently, when it was released, it was a flop and there was some controvery because it was deemed offensive and stereotypical but, even though I’m usually sensitive for that matter, it really didn’t bother me at all and I thought it was actually a pretty accurate way to represent extremist muslims. The only thing, in my opinion, that prevented this movie to become really good was the botched ending. Indeed, they managed to develop a realistic and complex world situation and the ending clearly stood out as something from a fairy tale during which, somehow, within the last 10 minutes, all those complicated issues were pretty much solved magically. The current rise of the Islamic terrorism show that this situation won’t be solved so easily and won’t be solved anytime soon. Still, in spite of its flaws, I think it is really interesting movie and it is definitely worth a look.

An acquired taste

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 8 February 2011 09:28 (A review of Death Proof)

A couple of weeks ago, I was finally able to see 'Grindhouse' and even though I liked it, it was definitely not a masterpiece, above all because the 'Death Proof' segment was really disappointing. So, I was rather apprehensive before watching this longer version but, after all, to my surprise, I thought it was not that bad after all. It was still nothing really amazing though. Indeed, there was barely any story at all and no character development whatsoever. Some of the dialogues were cool and funny but most of it was just some useless chit-chat between the characters. In fact, even Tarantino himself considers this movie the weakest he has made so far. So why did I like it anyway ? It is probably because it was the 2nd time I saw it, I knew what to expect and my expectations were rather low this time. Furthermore, the soundtrack was very good and Tarantino knows how to direct a movie, that's for sure. To conclude, I think is an acquired taste but it is still worth a look, especially if you are interested in Quentin Tarantino's work. However, if you have to choose between watching 'Grindhouse' or 'Death Proof', keep in mind that 'Death Proof' was never intended to be watched as a stand-alone feature so you should definitely go for 'Grindhouse', it is much more interesting and fun to watch.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 8 February 2011 08:11 (A review of Funny Face)

Honestly, since I'm not a huge fan of musicals, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the damned thing but since I have always had a weak spot for Audrey Hepburn, I thought it might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, even though it was watchable,  I can't say I really enjoyed. I have to confess, I haven’t seen as many movies as I wish starring Audrey Hepburn but this movie must be the most boring one I have seen so far. I mean, sure, Hepburn was just really charming as usual and Fred Astaire was definitely a fine dancer (I would always prefer Gene Kelly though) but the story was just way too fluffy for my taste. Obviously, I’m fully aware that it is a trademark in this genre but it doesn’t change the fact that the whole thing felt rather tedious. Furthermore, I don’t think that Astaire and Hepburn had a really great chemistry. I mean, I don’t know if you have noticed it but Audrey Hepburn’s characters were always falling in love with some much older guys and maybe it was fine back in those days but if they would do the same thing today, it would look kind of creepy. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I guess it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An interesting failure

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 7 February 2011 05:52 (A review of Stay)

Since I loved most of the movies directed by Marc Forster and since there was an awesome cast, I was really dying to watch this flick. Eventually, I loved many things about it but, still, even though I have a lot of respect for the people involved and what they tried to achieve, I'm afraid I still have to consider this movie a failure. Honestly, it is actually difficult to describe this movie, especially its plot. Basically, it is a psychological thriller or a great mind-f*ck, if you prefer. And there were lots of great ideas, it was visually spellbinding, the actors were really good as well and for most of the duration of this movie, I was really on the edge of my seat.... until the end which I found rather underwhelming. Basically, they keep you in the dark during the whole thing, throwing some weird stuff all the time and you wonder how they will handle all those questions that the viewers are legitimately asking. And, indeed, at the end, you get some answers but like I said before, I thought it was rather disappointing. Still, in spite of its flaws, the whole thing remained rather fascinating, there was a great cast (Ewan McGregor, Ryan Gosling, Naomi Watts, Bob Hoskins) and the directing by Marc Forster was really strong, it is just too bad the story didn't really work for me. To conclude, I still think is a very well made and fascinating thriller which was just maybe a little too ambitious concerning its plotline but it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An interesting failure

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 7 February 2011 05:24 (A review of The Number 23)

Honestly, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jim Carrey, I was really eager to check it out. Indeed, when Jim Carrey tries something else, it is usually pretty good (‘The Truman Show’, ‘The Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind’, ‘Man on the moon’,...) so there was a fair chance that it could be at least decent. Eventually, there were many things I enjoyed about this feature. First of all, you can say whatever you want about Joel Schumacher but the guy knows how to direct a movie. Furthermore, I thought that Carrey was indeed good and I really loved the mood of this movie. Unfortunately, the conclusion was just really weak. Indeed, they managed to build up a fascinating mindf*ck and during the whole thing, you are wondering how it will all end up. However, at the end, they tried to wrap it up and gave us a more or less rational explanation but it was definitely not really convincing. It is actually too bad because, a part from that, the whole thing really had some potential. Still, in spite of its flaws, it remains a well made and entertaining mindf*ck thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
