A great movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 29 January 2011 07:31 (A review of Sin City)

In 2014, after 9 long years, they finally came up with a sequel but, unfortunately, it seemed that nobody cared anymore and it was eventually a flop (or maybe it just stinks but I can’t judge since I haven't seen it yet). Anyway, when this first instalment came out, it had quite an impact and it became right away a cult-classic. At the time, I got pretty lucky as I managed to see it in the movie theater when it was released and I was seriously quite blown away by the damned thing. By now, I have seen most of the movies directed by Robert Rodriguez and, in my opinion, it is easily his best movie and I would go as far as saying that it is definitely one of the best comic book adaptations. Since then, I have actually bought the original Sin City comic books, those are great as well and I can tell you that this movie was a very faithful adaptation, probably the most faithful adaptation of a comic-book that you will ever see. Of course, the story was rather preposterous but, for once, it didn't bother me. To conclude, this flick just looks awesome and I loved the mood of the whole thing, I think it is a great achievement and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 29 January 2011 07:15 (A review of Fast Food Nation)

Even though Richard Linklater made the best movie released in 2014 (‘Boyhood’) and one of the best released in 2013 (‘Before Midnight’), somehow, I still have some mixed feelings about this director. Even so, I was quite eager to check this flick. Eventually, I thought this movie was really a typical example of why Linklater is an interesting director but not really a great one. First of all, I really liked this movie. Indeed, it was dealing with a really topical subject, I thought it was fairly well a done and the whole thing was just really interesting. Indeed, the movie made some very strong points about the fast food industry and I thought it seemed pretty realistic to me. The bottom line is that it made me think and wonder and that was its best asset. Still, the whole thing was not flawless though. Basically, there were just too many story lines and characters and the whole thing felt rather unfocused sometimes. The cameos felt also rather irritating and unnecessary (with the exception of Bruce Willis who was pretty good though). So, as often with Linklater, he came up here with a really awesome concept but the end-result was not exactly mind-blowing, I’m afraid. Still, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Richard Linklater’s work.

A lame movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 28 January 2011 01:38 (A review of The New Guy)

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Zooey Deschanel, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, obviously, it turned out to be a big mistake... I mean, seriously, I don't know who thought that DJ Qualls had enough star power to become a lead character in a movie but that was a really terrible idea. Sure, you could argue that it was refreshing to have an average looking guy to play the lead in a high-school comedy for once but I just couldn’t care less for this guy and, above all, the plot was rather abysmal and seriously underwhelming. I mean, on one hand, it used most of the usual annoying stereotypes in this genre and, on the other hand, the whole thing was just so convoluted, as a result, the whole thing was just rather cringe-inducing to behold. Concerning Zooey Deschanel, she was pretty much starting her career at the time, so, who could blame her for showing up in such lame high-school comedy? Apparently, it didn’t hurt her career and she eventually became one of the most interesting actresses of her generation. To conclude, I thought it was a really lame movie and you should probably avoid it.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 28 January 2011 01:34 (A review of Dragonheart)

I actually already watched this movie but it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, to be honest, I was at first slightly worried. Indeed, the beginning was seriously awkward and poorly paced. Basically, they tried to introduce all the major characters and explain their motivation all at once in a very short time but it was really weak. Fortunately, as soon as Bowen and Draco got properly acquainted, the whole thing went much more smoothly and the rest of the movie worked much better. Of course, it was still not really a masterpiece but I thought it was still pretty enjoyable. Indeed, even though Dennis Quaid seemed to be a rather odd choice to play a knight, he gave a competent performance and the special effects were actually pretty good too. Indeed, we have seen better since then but, 20 years later, I still think that Draco holds up pretty well visually speaking and I’m pretty sure it was one of the very first CGI character playing a lead, 5 years before Gollum showed up in the LOTR. Finally, the rest of the cast was also solid (David Thewlis, Pete Postlethwaite, Dina Meyer, Jason Isaacs, Julie Christie, Sean Connery) and the whole thing was simply quite entertaining. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A classic

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 28 January 2011 01:30 (A review of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town)

Since it is a really famous feature, I was quite eager to check it out. Basically, it is one of those big classics from the 1930's and, to be honest, I’m not really a huge fan of this genre and I had a rather hard time to really care about the whole thing. Indeed, they just don’t make movies like this anymore, such whimsical tales taking place in some idyllic version of the USA. The lead man, this time very well played by Gary Cooper, is completely flawless and virtuous and towards the end, everything is solved and it is as if all the problems in the world have been solved at once. Basically, it is all cute and charming but I guess I’m just too cynical for this material and, on top of that, I actually first saw the really weak and underwhelming remake starring Adam Sandler and that might have ruined this story for me. I have to admit that it was still a sweet and cute tale and thanks to the actors involved, it was still entertaining. To conclude, even though I wasn’t completely blown away by the whole thing, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 28 January 2011 01:20 (A review of Journey to the End of the Night)

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but even though I had never heard of it before, since I found it on DVD for a cheap price, I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, even though it was nothing really amazing, I must admit that it was not bad at all after all. Indeed, I really liked the mood and the actors were pretty good. There was indeed an interesting cast (Brendan Fraser, Mos Def, Scott Glenn, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Alice Braga) and they all delivered some decent performances. Above all, it was neat to see two of the most lovely and talented actresses from South America, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Alice Braga. Maybe I only had a problem with Brendan Fraser since he wasn’t really convincing. Basically, I always thought Fraser was rather obnoxious but, at least, this time, I have to admit it, he did try something completely different than his usual moronic comedies. But still, his performance didn't really blow me away. So, the whole thing isn't really flawless and, sometimes, the story was a little weak but, all in all, it remains a moody and entertaining thriller and even though it is nothing mind-blowing, it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 28 January 2011 01:17 (A review of The Pocket-knife)

Basically, it was another really obscure Dutch movie (I was only the 3rd listal member who has rated it) and I wasn’t really expecting much from this flick but since Ben Sombogaart is an interesting director, I thought I might as well give it a try. As I have mentioned in some other of my reviews, those family features are quite popular in the Netherlands but, in my opinion, it is not because they are actually really good. My theory is that since virtually all the foreign movies are subtitled in the Netherlands, the only films Dutch kids are able to see are Dutch, at least, until they are to read the subtitles. Basically, those Dutch family don’t have much competition and if the parents want to take their children to see something, well, they don’t have any choice and that’s how they usually become quite successful. Anyway, by now, you should have guessed, I really don't like them and this one was no exception. I mean, sure, it was really harmless and there is a fair chance that young kids might like it but, personally, I thought it was rather weak and actually seriously boring. To conclude, if you live in the Netherlands and you want to watch something nice with your kids, just pick up a great animated feature made by Pixar instead.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 28 January 2011 01:16 (A review of Heartlands)

Basically, it is a really obscure movie (I was only the 3rd listal member who actually did rate the damned thing) and the main reason I wanted to check it out was because Michael Sheen was involved. In fact, this flick was directed by Damien O'Donnell, an Irish director who got his breakthrough with ‘East Is East’. After this movie, he would make ‘Rory O'Shea Was Here’ which was really impressive but, unfortunately, it would be his last full length feature and he hasn’t done much during the following 10 years which was really too bad. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though it never seemed to be anything really ground-breaking, the beginning was actually quite promising and I really liked the rather dark humor. Unfortunately, the lack of ambition which was at first rather refreshing started to bother me at some point and the story and the characters were eventually not really interesting or entertaining enough, I’m afraid. Basically, I kinda of lost interest for the whole thing after a while. Still, to conclude, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Michael Sheen’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 28 January 2011 01:13 (A review of Shadow Conspiracy)

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since there was a decent cast, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, with such a really lame and generic title, you already know before watching the damned thing that you probably won’t get a masterpiece but you could hope that it could be at least a decent thriller. Well, apparently, even Linda Hamilton and Charlie Sheen admitted that it was actually pretty bad (apparently, Sheen even hated the damned the thing). Eventually, I have seen worse but the whole thing was certainly really average and rather forgettable. Back in those days, Charlie Sheen was already famous for his rather erratic way of life but, at least, he was still pretending to try to become a lead actor on the silver screen. A few years later, he would finally focus more on TV projects starting with ‘Spin City’ and the rest would be pretty much history. Concerning Donald Sutherland, it’s such a shame that such fine actor would spent most of its time (especially in the 90’s) showing up in such mediocre productions. Anyway, to conclude, I don’t see why you should watch this flick and it is definitely not worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 28 January 2011 01:10 (A review of Wildcats)

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but I still ended up watching the damned thing. First of all, I have to point out that I actually have nothing against sport movies in general but this one was just very average. Basically, the main issue was that Goldie Hawn was completely unbelievable as a football coach. I know, it is a comedy and it shouldn't be taken too seriously but, still, it just didn't work for me. On a positive note, it was pretty funny to see Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes and LL Cool J who were all giving their 1st part in this somewhat forgettable flick. Anyway, a part from that, there was not much to enjoy for me here as I have seen way too many similar movies before and this flick had really nothing new to offer about this genre. To conclude, I have to admit, it is not really bad and I have seen worse movies but it was still pretty damned average and I don’t think it is really worth a look in my opinion but, I guess, if you're a huge fan of this genre, you may end up enjoying it more than I did.
