(A review of
Wonder Woman 1984 )
I have noticed that this movie didnât get much love when it was released, both from the critics and the audience, so I was eager to check what was actually the fuss about it. Well, first of all, I want to point out that, even though I did enjoy the 1st installment, I didnât think it was so amazing like apparently everyone else. As a result, I can't say I was really disappointed by this sequel. Still, I would have to admit that it was indeed a step-down for this promising franchise. Indeed, there were many issues but, above all, it was too long, too clunky and just too cheesy. For example, the end-credit scenes with a cameo by Lynda Carter was maybe cute and harmless but it was also terribly cheesy. Considering the story itself, the whole concept of the Dreamstone granting you any wish was such a lazy and lame narrative gimmick. Seriously, was it the best thing they could come up with? And how convenient was that the damned thing was actually brought up to Dianaâs office? Eventually, they should have focused more on the fact that, because Diana is immortal, she is therefore terribly lonely, a fact which was barely brushed by this movie. In fact, even if Steve Trevor didnât die during the first movie, by 1984, he would still have been long dead which was a fact never acknowledged during this movie. I thought it was also rather disappointing that they didnât do anything interesting with the 80âs setting. Basically, the story took place during this time period only because it was convenient for the makers so they didnât need to bother with the other members of the Justice League. Furthermore, the action scenes which were pretty awesome in âWonder Womanâ were here rather awkward and never really convincing. Finally, this flick with a running time of 150 mins was just too damned long and there is absolutely no good reason why such a rather brainless blockbuster should last for so long. At least, Gal Gadot who was basically born to play this character was once again really good but she definitely deserved a better story. Anyway, to conclude, I might have been too generous with my rating here but, if only to see Gadot shining again, I still think the damned thing is worth a look.Â

(A review of
Wildlife)
To be honest, I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a solid cast involved, I was really eager to check the damned thing. I was also rather curious to see what Paul Dano would do with his directorial debut. Well, at least, he definitely provided an impressive acting showcase as Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan both delivered some strong performances. The young Ed Oxenbould was also pretty good but his task was actually much more difficult since he was basically a passive victim. To make it even more tricky for him, he had to show what his character was going through without much dialogue. And yet, in spite of the fine work of the cast involved, I still struggled to connect with the damned thing though. I guess the main issue I had was that the two main characters were just so downright unpleasant. Indeed, it has been a while since I have seen 2 parents who were so selfish and so full of self-pity. Of course, your first reflex would be to blame the father for leaving his wife and kid because he basically didnât know what to do with himself. However, as soon as he was gone, the mother started to show such a bewildering behavior. Seriously, it got so bad that, after a while, I canât say I was really rooting for her either. What was left was such a poor sweet boy who was basically witnessing his family imploding from the inside out which was rather depressing to be behold and, sometimes, even borderline infuriating. Anyway, to conclude, even if I had a hard time to connect with the material, the damned thing was very well made and the cast was involved was really strong so I still think it is worth a look.Â

(A review of
All You Need Is Love)
To be honest, I wasnât expecting much from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, just a couple of days ago, I also re-watched âLove Actuallyâ with my wife and even if Iâm not a huge fan like her, I have to admit that it is definitely a decent romantic-comedy. However, the most annoying thing about this classic is that we get nowadays so many worthless copycats and this movie was a perfect example, Iâm afraid. Indeed, thatâs probably one of the most disheartening aspects regarding the Dutch film industry, its complete lack of originality constantly ripping off other TV-shows and other successful movies. Anyway, as expected, you end up in this movie with a bunch of seriously half-baked little stories involving a bunch of really poorly developed characters who were never really entertaining or interesting to behold. The only one who managed to do something slightly worthwhile with this material was Fedja van HuĂȘt. Indeed, the guy is actually a fine actor and he was here able to convincingly portray a man going though a tough mourning process. I also liked the idea of a famous TV-show host dropping of the grid weeks before his show was supposed to be on the air. However, even this idea was completely ruined by the fact that he, for no clear reasons whatsoever, still came back in the nick of time to host the damned thing after all. Concerning the rest of the movie, well, none of it was convincing and/or entertaining whatsoever. Anyway, to conclude, it turned out to be another useless Dutch romantic-comedy and I think you should pretty much avoid it, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.

(A review of
Don't Look Up)
This movie was easily one of the most awaited movies to come out this year on Netflix so I was really eager to check it out, even if it didnât receive some stellar reviews after all. Well, unfortunately, it wasnât really good and, in my opinion, it did show once again how much Adam McKayâs recent output has been rather over praised. I mean, I have to admit it, the concept did have some potential and Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence were both at the top of their game as they both delivered some really strong performances. However, the first issue was that all the other characters were never really interesting or entertaining and there was a bunch of them. Furthermore, the concept turned out to be rather clunky after all. Indeed, the beginning scenes were pretty much pitch-perfect up until they had to go to the White House for the first time. Indeed, DiCaprio and Lawrence were doing an incredible balancing act between the comedy and the drama involving their terrible burden. However, all the people working in the White House turned out to be some incompetent annoying and sometimes rather weird fools which turned out to be some kind of virus infecting all the characters in this movie but, in contrary to what McKay might have thought, it didnât make them funny. There was also the issue that we are currently living in a worldwide pandemic which outcome has become rather uncertain and, even more dramatic, the current global warming is already catastrophic and might result in our extinction if we donât act quickly and properly so to make some gross jokes about the end of the world, at this juncture, was actually more depressing than really entertaining. Finally, the damned thing was just so pretentious. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I guess it was still a decent watch but, considering the talented people involved , it should have been much better than that though.

(A review of
Last Christmas)
I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but there was a decent cast involved and I thought it could be something interesting to watch with my wife. Well, to be honest, I really struggled to care about the damned thing though. I mean, Emilia Clarke was not bad at all and I really did appreciate that her character turned out to be fairly complex. Unfortunately, pretty much everything else was rather underwhelming. First of all, there were a couple of casting issues. Indeed, I keep seeing Henry Golding showing up during these last few years but, to be honest, he must be one of the most bland leading man I have seen and, in my opinion, he didnât have much chemistry with Clarke. Furthermore, what was the added value of the familyâs main character coming from ex-Yugoslavia, especially if, except for Boris Isakovic, none of the actors involved came from this country? At least, Michelle Yeoh was pretty good in this movie. Finally, I heard that the twist had been ruined by the trailer (something that already happened with âTerminator Genesysâ, another movie starring Emilia Clarke) but, fortunately, I didnât see this trailer. However, even without watching this trailer, to be honest, it was still fairly predictable anyway. Eventually, I remember, back in the 90âs, when Emma Thompson did win an Academy Award for writing the screenplay for âSense and Sensibilityâ, many thought, including me, that it could be the start of an interesting side-career next to her actress job. Unfortunately, she was never really productive in this area and, above all, everything she did deliver afterwards in the writing department has been at best fairly uninteresting and this movie was another perfect example. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and I guess I might be worth a look but only if you really like the genre though.

(A review of
Reggae in Babylon)
Since Iâm a huge Reggae fan and since this movie was available on Netflix, I was really eager to check it out. Well, I had never heard of this documentary before so itâs pretty cool that Netflix would allow a massive audience to get an easy access to it. Eventually, I have to admit that I didnât know all the bands that were displayed  and I have tried to track down who was involved but it turned out to be rather tricky since the damned thing is so obscure. Anyway, the concerts and recording sessions were all pretty awesome, especially the scenes with Aswad and Steel Pulse. Those were and still are obviously the most famous British Reggae bands (with the exception of UB40, a band which was for some reasons not included in this documentary) and I had the pleasure to see both acts in concert many years later. However, they were filmed here really at the beginning of their respective careers, a couple of years before they reached their commercial breakthrough and thatâs what makes this documentary so precious. Indeed, the timing was pretty much perfect and you really get to see the birth of a musical genre in the UK. However, to be honest, all the interviews in between were not really interesting, Iâm afraid. I mean, first of all, half of the time, you didnât even know who was talking, the questions they were asked were not really pertinent and the answers they gave were just the usual stereotypes. There was definitely an opportunity to go deeper in the subject here but they missed it, Iâm afraid. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still great to see this old footage and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are into Reggae music like me.

(A review of
LBJ)
I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Rob Reiner, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I thought it was seriously annoying that half of the movie was crippled by some useless back-and-forth chronology. Sure, you could argue that it was to convey the chaos and confusion following JFKâs murder but I would rather have had something more straightforward. At least, there is no doubt that Woody Harrelson gave here a really good performance and he completely disappeared in this character, even if the extensive make-up still didnât really make him look like Lyndon B. Johnson. Apart from that, I thought it was a solid attempt to rehabilitate a US president who has always remained in the shadow of John F. Kennedy. Indeed, thanks to this movie, I discovered that Johnson who maybe didnât have Kennedyâs good looks was actually a fine seasoned politician and his impact on the US domestic policy was huge. In fact, in this regard, he was probably one of the most important US presidents in office. Eventually, the only real issue with this movie was that it was too short. Indeed, if Johnsonâs domestic policy was an historical success, his foreign policy was however a complete disaster as he pushed and kept the United States in the Vietnam war which would be a terrible and traumatic tragedy for this nation. So, it was some really strong material which would have resulted in a complex and more balanced portrait but the makers completely skipped this and focused only his tremendous achievements regarding the Civil Rights. As a result, you get only a partial portrait which was interesting but not really satisfying, Iâm afraid. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.

(A review of
The Lady in the Van)
To be honest, I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, Iâm not sure if I really cared about this story but there is no doubt that Maggie Smith and Alex Jennings both delivered some really solid performances. Indeed, in contrary to the rest of the movie, Smith and Jennings were never really particularly kind to each other but it made their characters so much more interesting to behold. Without them, I seriously wonder if it would have worked at all since, even if the material was not bad, the tone was just too quirky for me. On top of that, they constantly focused on the fact that the past of this woman must be so interesting. As a result, they added a couple of twists regarding her past but, to be honest, I could have done without them. The first one, the fact that Miss Shepherd was apparently a talented pianist, was actually ruined by the opening scene. The second one, the fact that Miss Shepherd was at some point involved in a fatal car accident, was actually seriously predictable and therefore rather anti-climactic. Eventually, the argument made by this movie was that each homeless man or woman might have a fascinating background but is it the only reason why we should actually care about them? In fact, thatâs actually the opposite of how Maggie Smith played the character and the main point of interest, at least, as far as I was concerned, was the relationship between this man and this woman. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, thanks to Smith and Jennings, I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Â

(A review of
The Stolen)
To be honest, I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Alice Eve, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, Eve was quite charismatic, she also really made the most of this material and it was pretty neat to see her in a Western taking place in New Zealand. Unfortunately, this movie still never really worked though. First of all, I actually think the damned thing actually had some potential but the tone was not raw enough for me. A bigger issue was that too much stuff didnât make much sense. For example, how did the main character figure out that her son was in Goldtown? Seriously, I watched the scene in the post-office twice and I still didnât understand how she came to this conclusion. The bad guy was also rather bewildering. I mean, he stole their money, he killed David Lockton but that was apparently not enough, he also wanted to have Charlotte Lockton for himself so thatâs why he kept her baby? The only thing that could have make it work was if they might have chosen an actor who would have played the character as seriously unhinged but, for some reasons, they ended up with Jack Davenport who gave a completely lifeless performance. Another thing that didnât make sense whatsoever was that Joshua McCullen was working for the Locktons, he stole most of their money and within 3 months he managed to build up a hotel in Goldtown? Seriously, the timing felt way off since it was pretty obvious that the guy had been a major public figure in this little town for quite some time already. Anyway, to conclude, Iâm afraid it turned out to be another rather half-baked project for the lovely actress and I donât think it is really worth a look.Â

(A review of
A Song of Love)
To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was on the 'They Shoot Pictures, Donât They' list, I was quite eager to check it out. While watching this movie, I was wondering who Jean Genet actually was. In fact, he only directed this short and mostly wrote some books and poems which were at least as sulfurous and controversial as this only directorial effort. Eventually, Genet had a rather fascinating life, almost even more interesting than his body of work. Anyway, coming back on this short, the damned thing was seriously disturbing and, yet, quite fascinating at the same time. To be honest, it is hardly surprising that it had been banned for decades in most countries. Back then, Genet himself spent many years in prison himself and he gave us a rather bleak look on a French prison in the 50's but, obviously, it went way beyond this. Indeed, it was combined this with some (sometimes very explicit) homo-erotic imagery and the end-result was seriously disturbing. Basically, this mix of filth, hopelessness, violence, virility, sexuality and love was just so weird and, yet, at the same time, actually quite intoxicating and spellbinding to behold. Anyway, eventually, it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in more experimental movies.Â
