Bad Education
Note : Pedro Almodovar is one of those directors that I have always admired but, to be honest, he never became a personal favorite of mine. Basically, he is what you could call a real author who has created his own style and, therefore, he always got my respect but, honestly, I always had a hard time to connect with his work. Still, he did make a few movies which really did impress me and this one was definitely one of them. Eventually, I'm really glad I gave it another shot because I was, this time, much more able to enjoy the damned thing. Indeed, the acting, especially by Gael Garcia Bernal who was at the time probably one of the most interesting actors at work, was quite strong. It was really neat to see this Mexican actor in a Spanish production and it is a real pity the guy never really broke through like I was hoping for. On top of that, Almodovar definitely knows how to direct a movie and the whole thing was certainly interesting to behold. Above all, after all these years, I was finally able to enjoy this fascinating story which definitely belongs among the best delivered by the Spanish master, no less than that. Sure, he gave us his usual convoluted twists and some over-the-top characters which have always been some of his most famous trademarks but, here, it didn't bother me, in the contrary. Eventually, all the characters involved were complex and flawed but still relatable which is not always the case with this director.

An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Alain Resnais and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Except for ‘Nuit et brouillard’, it had been so many years since I saw a movie from this French master and, to be honest” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from the damned thing but since it was starring Bruce Willis, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, as expected, it turned out to be one these countless pathetic direct-to-VOD action flicks the guy made towards the end of his career. As ” read more

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I was actually surprised by how lame the damned thing turned out to be. It's too bad because, even if th” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this movie. Indeed, I constantly add movies to my queue. Right now, I’m focusing on older movies released during or before the 40’s and I think I came across this one more or less by accident on YouTube. Anyway, basically, it turned out to ” read more

Return to Seoul
Notes: Right away, it reminded me of her girl I used to know back in France who was also born in South-Corea and was adopted as a baby. We always got along very well and I wonder if her journey to self-discovery was similar to what happened in this movie (it was probably not so messy though). On top of that, because I'm half-French and half-Dutch, I could easily identify with the main character, even if her struggle was so much heavier for her than it was for me. As a result, this whole tale of conflicted cultural identities deeply appealed to me and it was handled in such a subtle way. The fact that it was dealing with a complex and flawed character made the whole thing even more fascinating to behold. Park Ji-Min, who was not even an actress before this movie, should also be praised for her performance which was pretty much pitch-perfect. Eventually, the only aspect that slightly dragged down the whole thing was possibly the fact that the structure was quite chaotic. Indeed, the main character kept making some drastic decisions and it was sometimes a little bit difficult to keep track of what was actually going on in her life. On the other hand, this approach actually made sense as it actually displayed how confused she was most of the time. Eventually, you might wonder if she eventually managed to find some peace of mind at some point but there is a fair chance that she will always have to deal with her inner struggle some way or another.
