Rhythmus 21
Notes: A couple of days ago, I saw ‘Rhythmus 23’ but I didn’t know it was actually a follow-up to this movie so I thought I might as well check it out as well. I have to admit that I had never heard of Hans Richter before but, apparently, he was a major German artist who was one of the first who dabbed into abstract film making. Even though this movie might not seem to be much (you have to keep in mind that it was made already more than 100 years ago), it is actually considered as one of the very first abstract film and had therefore a huge impact. With ‘Rhythmus 23’, the guy who uploaded the video on YouTube did also add his own music but, while it was a decent effort, to be honest, it wasn’t really a great combination. In this case, I watched it without sound as it was intended and, even though I usually don’t care much about movies which are completely silent, it actually worked fine here. Eventually, even though the whole thing looked rather rudimentary, it was still pretty neat and I wonder how it was done.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it seemed to have a decent reputation, I thought I might as well check it out. I have to admit that I didn’t know it before watching this movie but it was actually a  sequel to ‘Going My Way’ which I haven’t seen. Apparently, t” read more

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it was definitely dealing with a super interesting story, the movie itself was not really great, I’m afraid. First of all, I tho” read more

Return to Seoul
chosen by Ietje Notes: Right away, it reminded me of her girl I used to know back in France who was also born in South-Corea and was adopted as a baby. We always got along very well and I wonder if her journey to self-discovery was similar to what happened in this movie (it was probably not so messy though). On top of that, because I'm half-French and half-Dutch, I could easily identify with the main character, even if her struggle was so much heavier for her than it was for me. As a result, this whole tale of conflicted cultural identities deeply appealed to me and it was handled in such a subtle way. The fact that it was dealing with a complex and flawed character made the whole thing even more fascinating to behold. Park Ji-Min, who was not even an actress before this movie, should also be praised for her performance which was pretty much pitch-perfect. Eventually, the only aspect that slightly dragged down the whole thing was possibly the fact that the structure was quite chaotic. Indeed, the main character kept making some drastic decisions and it was sometimes a little bit difficult to keep track of what was actually going on in her life. On the other hand, this approach actually made sense as it actually displayed how confused she was most of the time. Eventually, you might wonder if she eventually managed to find some peace of mind at some point but there is a fair chance that she will always have to deal with her inner struggle some way or another. Notes: I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick and, to be honest, I actually wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing. On top of that, I have to admit that I had never heard of Hans Richter before but, apparently, he was a major German artist who was one of the first who dabbed into abstract film making. Apparently, this movie was a follow-up to ‘Rhythmus 21’ which is considered as one of the very first abstract film and had therefore a huge impact. For some reason, I saw this one first but I will probably check ‘Rhythmus 21’ also at some point. Anyway, how was the movie itself? Well, even though it looked rather rudimentary (you have to keep in mind that it was made already 100 years ago though), it was still pretty neat and I wonder how it was done. The guy who uploaded the video on YouTube did also add his own music apparently but, while it was a decent effort, to be honest, it wasn’t really great though. Anyway, I thought it was a intriguing watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in more experimental movies.

Note : Even though this movie seems to be nowadays pretty much forgotten, I remembered very well when it was released in France. Indeed, in my my home country, it was a massive critical success (it even won the César of the Best French Film of the year) and there was a huge hype around the whole thing. Well, I have to admit that I didn't remember anything about this movie but, eventually, after a re-watch, I was so impressed by the damned thing, provably even more than the first time around. Indeed, when I first watched it, I was actually around the same age as the characters involved and, even if I did appreciate it at the time, I'm afraid it was too subtle for me. However, to watch it again almost 30 years later was actually quite emotional and even overwhelming. Indeed, I think it's a movie for a mature audience but, for me, it was also a whole word of recognition. Sure, I was born in the 80's but I was also born in a very small village in the French countryside and the everyday life and mood still looked quite similar. Furthermore, this time, I could really identify with this group of teenagers and with the complex feelings they struggled with. Indeed, André Téchiné managed to create a fascinating mood and those characters were all really 3 dimensional and felt so genuine.

I don't think Matt Dillon had such a bad career, he just makes a lot of movies that nobody really watch. On the other hand, with Tom Berenger, you're completely right, his track-record of the last 20
