A classic

“Since this movie was the last classic directed by Sergei Eisenstein that I haven’t seen yet so far, i was quite eager to check it out. Well, the story turned out to be pretty simple after all. Indeed, Russia was invaded by the Germans, Aleksandr Nevsky managed to gather Russian fighters from all ” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a pretty cool cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though I always had a weak spot for Matthias Schoenaerts and Joel Kinnaman and even though it was really cool to have these 2 actors” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the damned thing but since it did win the César of the Best French movie of the year, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I have to admit that I’m usually not a huge fan of costume dramas but this one looked really good and, above” read more

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Rosamund Pike, I thought I might as well check it out. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Directed by: David Blue Garcia With: A bunch of unknown actors Was the original - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - worth a look? In my opinion, it is a little bit old now and not really frightening anymore and the ending is a total mess. Still, it remains a classic, a solid horror movie and a definitive milestone for this genre. Will I ever watch this remake? Since it was released on Netflix, I guess I could easily watch it without investing too much of my time and/or money in the damned thing. However, since it was poorly received and since none of the actors involved or the director seem to be interesting, I think I will skip it though.

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Not to be confused with the classic directed by John Carpenter or the other recent remake by David Gordon Green, this is another version directed by Rob” read more

Riceboy Sleeps
Notes: To be honest, when I heard we were going to see this movie with my filmclub, I can't say I was really excited. I mean, I did like the title and the poster but I had never heard of it and it seemed to be another obscure and rather forgettable picture. Well, I was completely wrong, that's for sure. Since I'm half-French and half-Dutch myself, I'm always drawn towards such movies dealing with characters facing culture clashes and identity crisis and, in this movie, they really nailed it. What I enjoyed the most was how nuanced and complex the situation of this boy was displayed. Of course, as an outsider, his environment was certainly not welcoming but it went beyond that. Indeed, what defines you as an individual is not necessarily your genes, where you come from or where you grew up, it's actually a combination of all these elements but, as a kid, that's not something you want to be dealing with. As displayed in this movie, you just want to play with the other kids, you just want to be like everyone else, and the idea of being 'special' or 'different' is definitely the last thing you actually want to be. To be honest, I'm not sure if it was really needed to have the mother facing terminal cancer on top of everything. Indeed, there was so much going on already and it seemed to be added there only to make sure that her son could carry her on the top of this mountain, just like the Korean tale she told earlier during this movie. Fortunately, it wasn't a deal breaker and the whole thing was beautiful and quite emotional.
