The Goddess
Notes: I think it must be the oldest Asian movie I have ever seen and, yet, I thought the approach on the topic of prostitution was actually quite modern. Indeed, this movie was basically a really humanist movie, giving a sympathetic look on this profession and I was actually rather surprised when the school principal would stand up for her. I really didnā€™t expect, even if it didnā€™t work out. However, this dramatic turn of events was actually more accurate, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, even nowadays, prostitutes are rather despised, even though the vast majority of these women certainly didnā€™t choose this job because it would be a great career move. What was also interesting is that, even though it was a silent movie, the acting was actually really subtle, especially by Lingyu Ruan who was just quite spellbinding to behold. Ruan, with her charisma and talent was apparently a huge star back in those days in China. However, to be honest, the whole thing was still a little bit dry. Basically, this poor girl ended up in a very precarious but also lonely situation but this character and her situation didnā€™t really evolve through the whole thing (ok, it did get slightly worse towards the end, Iā€˜ll have to admit that). Furthermore, to see her ā€˜bossā€™ constantly harassing her over and over again became slightly redundant at some point. Basically, it was a rather well made but fairly simple tale after all and if you expect something epic, you might be disappointed.

Notes: The damned thing turned out to really weak, in fact, it was probably the worse movie I have seen so far starring Hawke. Seriously, itā€™s the kind of movie during which they did blow up some power plant in some rather convoluted scene and, yet, afterwards, the lights were still on everywhere in this city. To make things worse, it was apparently not at all needed for them to be onsite since it could have disabled remotely. Of course, I understand that it was supposed to be a non-stop action flick and I did like the idea of a guy doing some tasks as if he was in some real version of ā€˜Grand Theft Autoā€™. However, the first mistake they made was to force the main character to go through all these tasks against his will which is such a lame approach. Even more problematic was that the action scenes (which did represent 99% of the running time) were just poorly put together. Above all, the rapid-fire editing was just so awful and made these scenes borderline incomprehensible. Seriously, there were as much as or maybe even more than 10 cuts within 30 seconds which was pretty much headache-inducing. Concerning Ethan Hawke, it is pretty obvious that he didnā€™t care much about the damned thing and got involved because he could do some cool stunts with some very cool car. Concerning Selena Gomez whose character was dropped in this tale completely randomly, I wonder what could have been the appeal for her. Maybe she should get another agent?

Notes: To be honest, it really took me a while to get into it. Indeed, at first, I was wondering why I should care about the supposedly difficult life of a girl who was young, healthy, bright and attractive. The fact that she did cheat with her boyfriend in every possible way, except for having sex, with a random stranger definitely didnā€™t help. Itā€™s only afterwards that I understood that it was actually done on purpose, to show that she wasnā€™t just another cute perfect girl in your typical romantic-comedy, that she was an actually really flawed and messed-up human being like everyone else. I just loved this slow built-up and Iā€™m just amazed how they made me slowly invest myself in this character for who I felt very little at first. Eventually, from the moment that she dumped her first boyfriend, I finally started to care more about what she was going through and, by the time she did eat these mushrooms, I was completely sold. It was actually such a deep humanist portrait of a young woman struggling to find herself and making sense of her life. However, to be honest, I did think that the ending was rather weak though. Indeed, I wish that she didnā€™t end up with a really cool fancy job, like most of us do. Furthermore, to make her witness her 2nd ex-boyfriend ending with another woman with a baby (when they probably did break up because she got pregnant) was just a really awkward choice that the makers made because they explicitly wanted to go for the completely opposite that you usually get in the romantic-comedy genre. Still, except for that, the whole thing was pretty much flawless and seriously spellbinding to behold.

A very good movie

“I already saw this movie but I thought I might rewatch it with my wife. Well, unfortunately, she didnā€™t like it at all but I thought the damned thing was still really strong though. However, to be honest, I have to admit it, the first time around, it really took me a while to get into it. Indeed, ” read more

Notes: Once again, Wes Anderson didnā€™t disappoint and delivered another delightful picture. Eventually, itā€™s not very often that I came across such an anthology of short stories which worked so well. Indeed, none of these 3 stories could have been really developed as a full-length feature and yet, there was plenty of room to fully develop each tale (which wasnā€™t the case, for example, with 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggsā€™, the anthology delivered by the Coen brothers). However, even if it was quite enjoyable, I donā€™t think it was one of Andersonā€™s best movies though. Above all, I thought the whole thing was just rather exhausting to watch. I mean, sure, as usual with this director, the whole thing was visually really impressive and the amount of details and visual tricks was once again just amazing. In fact, to really grasp what was going in the screen, you should pretty much watch it frame by frame so you can notice every single neat detail. However, in normal speed, there was so much random stuff going on, I think I missed half of it which was rather tiresome and frustrating. Concerning the cast, well, pretty much every Anderson production has become some kind of All-Star game of the best actors around which might sound neat but it also has its downside. Indeed, as a result, at least half of them came by just to do one scene and it was in fact rather distracting to see a major actor playing some random character with barely any impact on the movie. Anyway, even if it was maybe not another slam dunk for Wes Anderson, it was still pretty good though.

“To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from the damned thing but since there was a solid cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Notes: It was pretty neat to see for the first time a movie starring Rudolf Valentino who was basically the Tom Cruise of the Silent era. Concerning the movie itself, well, it was entertaining enough but, to be honest, I thought it was too random for my taste though. Indeed, it all started with a rather dashing action scene but then, it became some kind of romantic-comedy during which the main character was dodging the sexual advances of the Czarina. However, it didnā€™t last long ever, as the Czarina pretty much disappeared from the movie and the rest was about Valentinoā€™s character trying to avenge his father. But even this revenge thing completely disappeared at the end when he ended up with the girl of his dreams. Eventually, the most interesting aspect about this story was the fact that the main character was plotting to kill a man while falling in love with his daughter. Unfortunately, the tone was much too light to really dig deeper into these conflicting feelings. Anyway, as you can see, it was all pretty messy but the whole thing did look good and Valentino was definitely quite charismatic. Indeed, he approached the lead character not as a super strong macho archetype (in spite of the impressive opening scene) but more as a subtle sensual being. As a result, he was often considered by the male audience back in those days as being too effeminate but the female audience, in the other hand, was completely fascinated by him.
