Plan 9 from Outer Space
Notes: Like many other people, I really loved ā€˜Ed Woodā€™, the movie directed by Tim Burton, but to be honest, I actually never heard of Ed Wood before. So, since the guy was really intriguing, I was really curious about his work and I was quite eager to check this flick which was one of his notorious ones. In fact, back in those days, I even bought this movie on VHS (yes, Iā€™m that oldā€¦) for my sister for Christmas or something like that. Well, even though I did expect it to be pretty average, I thought it was in fact really terrible. Of course, you might argue that it was so bad, it became good at some point but, no , it was just plain awful, boring and not entertaining at all. I'm sure Ed Wood was a nice guy who was really passionate about his work but, seriously, he was completely incompetent and if you think I'm being harsh, you should check this flick.

Cabiria
Notes: A long time ago, when I was a student, I spent a year in Cambridge and, when I was there, I had the pleasure to follow a course about film history. The goal with this course was to start from the very beginning and go slowly up to the 80ā€™s, if Iā€™m not mistaken. So, this was the first movie we had to watch and, to be honest, it wasnā€™t an easy one. I mean, to give you an idea, before we watched the damned thing, our teacher actually warned us that it would be probably seriously tedious and she said she wouldnā€™t blame us if we wouldnā€™t stick around until the end. And, indeed, at the beginning, I think the whole class was present but, at the end, we were only 3 still watching the damned thing (including me, of course). And, yes, the whole thing was just so boring to behold. Indeed, for more than 2 hours, you get to see a decadent mute black-and-white murky drama involving some Roman guy apparently called Maciste. At the end of the day, it boils down to how much slack you should give to a movie just because it is old.

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Carice van Houten, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, even though the material was super interesting, to be honest, the damned thing turned to be rather half-baked, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, ” read more

Notes: In fact, I remember very well the first time I saw it. Basically, my girlfriend at the time actually picked it up saying that it was a classic and that we should definitely watch it together. Well, back then, I really had a hard time to care about the damned thing, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, the musicals has always been my least favorite genre and, even though through the years I have learned to be more appreciative towards these movies, when I was younger, I was not so forgiving. As a result, even though this movie was indeed supposed to be a classic, I thought it was just so boring. Well, Iā€™m glad I gave it a second chance at some point. Indeed, most of the songs are actually really catchy and some of them even became some huge classics since then. The tricky thing with this movie is that, when the musical came out, it was a contemporary piece dealing with the hippie culture but every single new adaptation, including this movie, was basically a period piece which had to recreate this time period. Well, in this area, the movie still struggled in my opinion and Iā€™m not surprised that the makers of the original musical were not convinced or pleased by the fact that the hippies were portrayed as some kind of goofballs. The attempts of the makers to create a plot around this musical were also commendable but not entirely successful either. Finally, the characters were barely developed but I guess that it is something inherent to the genre.

“Since this movie had received some really poor reviews and ratings, I wasnā€™t expecting much but since I have a weak spot for Kevin Bacon, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I didnā€™t care much about the damned thing after all. I mean, it was visually not bad but everythin” read more

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I remember it very well when it was released In France. Indeed, at the time, there was a lot of buzz around this movie and it quickly became a huge cult classic. Apparently, it also reached some international recognition. With this in mind, I had some really high expectations before watching the damned thing but, to be honest, I thought it was really disappointing. I mean, I have to admit it, the whole thing really had some potential, it started pretty well, it was a little bit like ā€˜Spinal Tapā€™ but instead of some hard rockers, you had a serial killer and it had some pitch black humor. But after a while, the jokes got worse and worse with 2 top moments, one when the main character goes to a restaurant to eat some mussels and eventually throws everything up (this scenes lasted like 20 minutes...) and one of the final scenes when the guy rapes a woman... Eventually, I really had a hard time to care for the whole thing.

Notes: I'm not a huge fan of Westerns in general but I always enjoy a good Western from time to time but, honestly, it wasn't one of them. I mean, Jane Fonda was really charming, as usual, and she tries really hard to make her character appealing but it didn't work, I'm afraid. I know, it is just a Western comedy and I shouldn't take it too serioualy but I thought it was one of the most boring and idiotic Westerns I have ever seen. I mean, it wasn't really bad, I'll give you that, but it wasn't entertaining either. The worst thing, the most frustrating thing, was that Lee Marvin eventually won an oscar for his supporting part. He wasn't really bad and he actually gave a decent performance but, from all the characters he has portrayed during his impressive career, was it really the one which should have been rewarded?! I don't think so .... Furthermore, I think it was a good idea to make a Western with a female lead character, I haven't seen many of those, but they should have provided a more interesting plot than this.

“To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of PokĆ©mon (on the other hand, I have to admit that I was at some point pretty addicted to the videogame ā€˜PokĆ©mon Emerald Versionā€™ on the Game Boy Advance during a summer vacation) but since this movie was available on Netflix, I thought I might as we” read more
