Notes: Even though it was a big critical and commercial success when it was released, to be honest, I really had a hard time to care about the damned thing after all. Indeed, even though the beginning scenes were supposed to be sweet and gentle, I thought there were just too fluffy and even borderline silly, to be honest. For example, you had this deal with the roses competition which was seriously tedious. Then, the main plot was not bad but still nothing really amazing and, on top of that, it turned out to be some massive propaganda which was rather disappointing. In my opinion, the whole thing feels terribly dated and I’m rather amazed it is still getting so much credit nowadays. At least, I have to admit it, Greer Garson and Teresa Wright were both really lovely but it was certainly not enough. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit it, it was still a decent watch.2 years, 7 months ago

Notes: Well, even though it wasn’t bad, I have to admit that I seriously had a hard time to care about the damned thing. At least, Judy Hollyday did look gorgeous and she definitely gave a very good performance (she even won at the time the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role) . It is quite a shame she would stop only 10 years later after this movie because she was seriously talented and charismatic. Anyway, except for Holliday, the movie itself was actually nothing really amazing in my opinion. Sure, it was all rather harmless and innocent but it was also rather dull. I mean, seriously, back then, it was possible to release a comedy with such a rather lame concept and get a hit but I doubt it would work nowadays. And, indeed, 40 years later, they tried to remake the damned thing with Melanie Griffith playing the main character but it was really poorly received. Anyway, even if I don’t think it grew old very well, it is still a classic.2 years, 7 months ago

Notes: If I recall it correctly, I saw it as a teenager at school and I was rather disappointed because, as a kid, I grew up with Chaplin's hilarious older movies starring the Tramp so I was expecting something really funny to happen but I barely laughed during the whole thing. Back in those days, I didn't know that Chaplin had been basically thrown out from the USA because he was supposedly communist, so there was some irony which I missed concerning the fact the main character was almost facing the same faith in this feature. Eventually, I have re-watched it recently and it was actually slightly better than I remembered. Indeed, the story was still rather weak and the main character was still not really interesting whatsoever but, this time, I thought there were some hilarious scenes. Of course, if you compare this movie to Chaplin's timeless silent comedies, it is not that great or hilarious but, as a stand-alone, it remains quite funny and entertaining.2 years, 7 months ago
