The Meaning of Life
Notes: By now, I have seen all the movies involving the Monty Python and while I was wildly enthousiast at first, I must admit it that I was a little bit disappointed. I mean, I more or less enjoyed all their movies but I didnā€™t find them really excellent and I came to the conclusion that their humor is not really my cup of tea. For example, I had some big expectations for this flick but, to be honest, I thought it was a little bit disappointing. I know this is a huge classic but I didn't think it was that great. Don't misunderstand me! I enjoyed it and I though it was pretty good but it was not a masterpiece in my opinion. I mean, the concept sounded awesome on paper but it was just too random. Indeed, for me, it is was too anarchic and incoherent and the whole thing was just a collection of sketches. Sure, there were many funny moments but I preferred the struture that they used for 'The Life of Brian' which had more or less a plot. In spite of all this, after all, it is still a very funny and entertaining flick though.

A bad movie

“To be honest, I wasnā€™t expecting much from the damned thing but since it was starring Robert De Niro, I thought I might as well check it out anyway. Well, even if it was maybe not the worst movie I have seen starring the legendary actor, it was still not far from it though. Basically, it was your ” read more

Three Colours: Red (1994)
Notes: First of all, IrƩne Jacob kept reminding me of another actress and it took me a while to figure out that it was Claire Danes. I know, they don't actually really look a like but it had mostly to do with her silhouette and her body language which was just so similar to Claire Danes, at least, in my opinion. Anyway, in fact, it was just seriously distracting. Coming back to the movie itself, it has always been considered as the best movie in Krzysztof Kieslowski's heralded trilogy but, to be honest, I still think it is a rather tricky movie. Fortunately, I was more able to enjoy it the 2nd time around but I still struggled to connect with the damned thing though. Above all, it had to do with the fact that what Kieslowski tried to achieve with this movie still remained rather obscure to me. On top of that, to be honest, I don't think that the characters were really fascinating. Still, there is no doubt that IrƩne Jacob and Jean-Louis Trintignant gave some strong performances and there was something really interesting in their relationship which was refreshingly platonic.

The Bag Man
Notes: Well, even if it was maybe not the worst movie I have seen starring Robert De Niro, it was still not far from it though. Basically, it was your typical cheap direct-to-DVD thriller, John Cusackā€™s speciality for about a decade, but you might wonder why De Niro would bother with this kind of movies at this stage in his career. Anyway, even if it wasnā€™t really a long movie, it still felt like it was lasting forever which is never a good sign. Concerning the cast, Robert De Niro was actually not bad but he basically showed up for only a few scenes. At least, De Niro seemed to have some fun but, on the other hand, Cusack seemed to be completely bored out of his mind and displayed the same conviction and commitment that you might expect from someone working at your local McDonaldā€™s. Concerning Rebecca Da Costa, I have to admit that she was quite attractive and I can imagine that she hoped to get her big breakthrough by working with such big names. However, her character was constantly described and handled as a hooker and, while she did her best to convince the viewers that there was actually much more going on with this character, I was never convinced, or worse, I never really cared. Eventually, itā€™s basically the kind of movies which didnā€™t display a single original idea. Seriously, somehow, they even managed to squeeze in an ending directly lifted from ā€˜Sevenā€™.

Seinfeld
What is it about? The continuing misadventures of neurotic New York City stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his equally neurotic New York City friends. My verdict: After all these years, thanks to Netflix, I had the opportunity to finally watch this show and it was a total blast. What a hilarious show, miles and miles better than any other sitcoms I have ever seen (and there were tons of them when I was growing up in in the 90's). Will I watch the following seasons? To be honest, to watch more than 170 episodes of a single TV-show is a rather daunting prospect and it will take me maybe 6 months to watch all of it but I will definitely watch every single one of them, that's for sure. P.S: Eventually, it took me almost a year to watch the whole thing after all but it was definitely worth it.

Suspicion
Notes: Honestly, it is not one of the most famous movies directed by Hitchcock but I still enjoyed it anyway. Basically, it is one of those very old Hitchcock thrillers which still feel very modern somehow and they always keep you on the edge of your seat from the beginning until the end, at least in my case. The major attraction in my opinion was that, for once, Cary Grant played against type and he portrayed the bad guy. I mean, not only it was really unexpected but I also thought that he was just amazing, at the same time, very charming and suave as usual, but also menacing and potentially lethal. After watching this, you see that Cary Grant really had some skills and it is rather too bad that he spent most of his career usually playing the same characters (on the other hand, Iā€™m not a huge expert on his work, so I might be mistaken). Still, aside Grantā€™s intriguing performance, the rest of the movie was a little too pedestrian to become truly remarkable but it was still quite enjoyable.

Back to the Future
Notes: Even though I did grow up during the 80's, Somehow, I have to admit that I never really felt much connection with this flick though. I mean, sure, it is pretty neat, no doubt about it, but I never thought it was really so mind-blowing and, I guess, it probably had to do with the story. Basically, you have this kid who finds a time-travelling super car. It sounds great, however, instead of discovering the future and some fantastic world in the process, he actually goes back to the 50's in the USA. I don't know, maybe it was pretty neat for all the American kids watching this flick but, to be honest, I didn't care much about the time period they picked up. Sure, it was decent enough but when I think about time-travelling, my first thought wouldn't be 'Wow, I would really love to go 30 years back in time and see my parents when they were my age'. However, I have to admit it, it is still a really fun movie though, Marty McFly and Doc Brown were both incredibly entertaining and the DeLorean must be the coolest time-machine ever created.

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, I was quite eager to check it out. What made this movie even more interesting was the fact that, for the first time in his impressive career, Koreeda was working outside of Japan in another language ” read more

The Thing from Another World
Notes: Back then, they didnā€™t have monstrous budget (as a matter of fact, it was made with only 40,000 dollars) and they didnā€™t have such complex special effects or CGI like nowadays. In those days, it was all about the characters and what they were going through. Basically, there were 3 group of characters : the military, the scientists and the press (solely represented by Scotty). Each group had their own reaction towards the ā€˜thingā€™ and it was pretty interesting to see them discuss how they should handle the situation. I thought it was also pretty neat that, for a good chunk of the movie, you didnā€™t see ā€˜itā€™ at all, you just had to imagine ā€˜itā€™ following the words and the body language of the characters. As soon as the alien (which of course looked rather ridiculous) was displayed, this tale unfortunately lost its edge but, still, for a 70 year old feature, it thought it was pretty solid.

The Man Who Knew Too Much
Notes: I wonder if it was Alfred Hitchcock's first real success. I mean, before that he already did direct around 20 movies but they were rather obscure and forgotten nowadays. Anyway, Hitchcock would even remake this flick 20 years later with James Stewart and Doris Day with even more success. Since I already saw the 2nd version, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect this time but I was rather pleased that the two movies didnā€™t have much in common actually. I mean, the basic plot is indeed similar but the execution was really different so it is really worth a look to watch both movies. Basically, it follows the usual gimmick used by Hitchcock, which is to put some ordinary folks in some obscure thriller. The thing I enjoyed the most was probably Peter Lorreā€™s performance. The guy became famous with ā€˜Mā€™, this was his first English language film and he did a great job. Indeed, all the other actors were decent but Lorre clearly stood out creating a spellbinding mannered man which was even more impressive when you learn that he didnā€™t even speak much English at the time. Anyway, to conclude, even if it is not one of Hitchcockā€™s masterpieces, it is still a pretty good thriller though.

Notes: Eventually, I have to admit that it is a real solid Western and it definitely deserves its reputation as a major classic in this genre. First of all, even though I haven't seen many movies starring Montgomery Clift, he was a really fine actor and it was really neat to see him in his acting debut. Concerning John Wayne, in my opinion, he is usually seriously boring but this movie belongs to the few exceptions in which he played a much more complex character than usual. In fact, his character was at the same time the hero but also the villain of this tale and it made him quite spellbinding to behold. Concerning the story itself, it was a solid classic tale of cowboys moving some cattle through miles and miles and it worked fine except for the ending which was just way too cheesy. Anyway, even if it didn't completely blow me away, I still enjoyed this movie.

Citizenfour
Notes: Like everyone else, I know who Edward Snowden is but, to be honest, when he came up with his big revelation, I wasnā€™t really surprised at all. I mean, with all this data available, it would be rather naĆÆve to believe that most government organisations wouldn't be eager to tap into this huge source of information. I mean, Iā€™m not saying that it is ok but I think it was just inevitable. Concerning this movie, it is quite striking to see Edward Snowden and the involved journalists discussing their plan just hours before releasing some of these highly classified documents. Still, even though Snowden tried to convince us that the whole endeavour was not about him, eventually, the guy still became a huge star. Eventually, you might wonder, if he didnā€™t reveal his identity so quickly, maybe the focus would have been set more on his quest than on himself. In fact, within only 3 years, Oliver Stone would make a thriller about all this and it was called ā€˜Snowdenā€™ showing how the guy still got a lot of attention after all. Anyway, even if it didnā€™t really blow me away, it was still a really interesting documentary though.

Raise the Red Lantern
Notes: To be honest, even though it was definitely an interesting watch, I canā€™t say it really blew me away though. I mean, as usual with Zhang Yimou, it was very well directed and visually really neat. Furthermore, Gong Li was once again so charismatic and gave also another strong performance. Eventually, I guess I hard a hard time to really care about this story which was definitely intriguing but never really spellbinding. I donā€™t know, maybe it was just too subtle for me and since the characters never really clearly stated their feelings, I had a hard time to really care about what they were going through. For example, at first, the main character seemed to be really distraught that her life was turned upside down after she was given away for a marriage she didnā€™t choose. However, as soon as she got in this mansion, she started to fight for her position but I didnā€™t really understand why. Indeed, her life was pretty much over, she would spend her whole life stuck in this place to be some kind of sex slave so why should she care about all this? Anyway, even if I didnā€™t really connect with this movie, it was still pretty good.
