Notes: To be honest, I’m not usually not a huge fan of such old Westerns but I have to admit that this one was not bad at all. Indeed, I really liked a how they mixed a rather generic vendetta with the odyssey of a precious stolen rifle. Indeed, while James Stewart’s character kept hunting for his nemesis, which was rather generic, it seemed that his stolen rifle was somehow cursed as every new owner managed to keep it only for a short while and most of them violently died in the process. As a result, it made the whole thing completely unpredictable and more entertaining than if it only focused on James Stewart’s character obsessively chasing some seemingly random dude. It’s too bad that they didn’t manage to do more with Shelley Winters’s character as she was such a charismatic actress. Indeed, in my opinion, she was more interesting than many pretty faces who were much more famous than her at the time. In fact, even Winters was not exactly impressed by what they had done with her character who basically waited on the side line until she could finally end up with the main character. Anyway, even if I don’t think that it was anything really ground-breaking, it was still a solid vintage Western.

A Throw of Dice
Notes: The production value was actually quite impressive as it all looked authentic and quite beautiful to look at. Furthermore, Charu Roy and Seeta Devi had a pretty good chemistry. However, concerning the story itself, well, it turned to be a cute Indian fairy tale but, to be honest, it wasn’t really much more than that. Indeed, the biggest issue, in my opinion, was that the famous throw of dice came up just way too late and, as a result, everything happening before felt too random. I mean, you might wonder why King Sohat didn’t plot this right from the start since it seemed to be a much easier and above all efficient way to overthrow King Ranjit. Then, when the fateful event finally took place, its aftermath didn’t last long since, within 5 mins, it was already discovered what actually really happened and the whole movie was even wrapped up within the next 10 mins. Still, it was easily the oldest Indian movie I have ever seen and, even though there was no wild dance scenes, it has been a huge precursor for the Bollywood production. Eventually, I was surprised that it was actually directed by a German guy called Franz Osten. Indeed, most US or European productions taking place in some ‘exotic’ country, even nowadays, will almost always include a white main character but Osten didn’t make this mistake here which I really did appreciate.

A good movie

“When I first heard that Steven Spielberg was coming up with a remake of this legendary classic musical, I can’t say I was really excited by this idea. However, even though it was a box-office flop, it turned out to be a huge critical success and, since it was available on Disney+, I thought I migh” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. On top of that, it was also Peter Bogdanovich’s final directorial effort but it seems that Bogdanovich’s career did end up with a whimper, I’m a” read more

Cry Macho
Cast : Clint Eastwood, Dwight Yoakam What was it about? A one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder takes a job to bring a man's young son home and away from his alcoholic mom. On their journey, the horseman finds redemption through teaching the boy what it means to be a good man. My two cents: Even though the old film legend is still productive, it has been more than a decade since Clint Eastwood really impressed me and I’m afraid this new director effort was probably one of his weakest movies so far. I mean, even though I’m not huge fan of road-trips (I think it’s a lazy gimmick), I really like minimalistic features involving a few characters and I do believe that Rafo was a really interesting character. Unfortunately, well, pretty much nothing else did work in this work though. There was first the issue that the film was filled with some awkward clichĂ©s about Mexico and especially the Mexican people. Another big issue with this movie was that the fact there were only 2 characters involved and both actors were just seriously miscast. Indeed, like I mentioned before, even though Rafo was a complex character with a lot of potential, Eduardo Minett was actually really weak though. Concerning Clint Eastwood, sure, he is actually a solid actor but I still think he wasn’t the right choice to play this character. Indeed, even though it’s really cool that Eastwood is making movies focusing on elderly characters (something terribly rare nowadays in spite of the ageing of the Western population), I’m afraid it didn’t work in this case though. Indeed, at more than 90 years old, Eastwood was at least 20 years too old to play this guy. The fact Natalia Traven’s character would fall in love with him, when she is in fact almost 40 years younger than Eastwood, was also ridiculous and even rather pathetic.
