Notes: I have to admit that I was not familiar at all with this kind of vintage Soviet movies. In this case, it turned out to be some kind of romantic-comedy dealing with a basic love triangle mixed up with some Soviet propaganda and this mix was quite intriguing to behold. Indeed, you can imagine that, if it would have been made in Hollywood back then, it would have been dealing with some characters from the upper class with some fancy costumes and houses and it would have been only about which guy would eventually end up with the girl. Here, the focus was put instead on this charming community of simple fishermen with nothing fancy about themselves or their lifestyle but thatâs what made them endearing. The fact that their leader was a young woman who acted always modestly was also quite refreshing. Of course, there is a high probability that they were not actually as happy as it was displayed in this movie but thatâs what you get with propaganda movies. Concerning the acting and the dialogues, well, to be honest, I canât say it was really impressive though as these two guys seemed to be able to display only two emotions, total bliss or complete despair. Anyway, I thought it was still a really interesting watch.2 years, 11 months ago

Notes: The most bewildering thing was that it took a whopping 30 years until Anthony Hopkins was finally provided with a part which was actually worthy of his tremendous talent. Indeed, the guy was just amazing and gave here one of the most pitch-perfect performances even delivered on the silver screen. Beside Hopkins at the top of his game, it was also a rather fascinating movie about dementia. Indeed, one of the usual stereotypes about people suffering of Alzheimer's disease is that they donât remember anymore who their loved ones actually are. In this case, they went much deeper than this clichĂ© and displayed that, the more confused Alzheimerâs patients get, the more they lose their grip on time and space. This process is probably also speed up by moving to a retirement home but to keep such a high maintenance patient at home might not be a better option, Iâm afraid. Eventually, thatâs probably what happened at some point, the main character was brought to a retirement home, maybe weeks before, maybe months before, but instead of making some new mental landmarks, like we all do, his scrambled brain never managed to handle this big change in his life. This whole process was so well displayed and it was just so heart-breaking to see this man who might have been brilliant at some point desperately shouting âIâm an intelligent manâ, without mentioning the ending scene during which he cries for his mother.2 years, 11 months ago

Notes: The damned thing turned out to be really impressive, even quite unforgettable I might add. Indeed, it is a great companion piece to âShoahâ, even if both movies tackled this subject in two completely different ways. At least, this movie was much shorter than âShoahâ so you might assume that it is much easier to swallow but you would be actually mistaken. In fact, you might be grateful that it is rather short because they gave us some of the most horrifying images I came across. The interesting thing is that the damned thing started with some rather bucolic shots of the countryside with some fairly whimsical tune. They even made some sarcastic jokes about the architecture of the guards towers which was just so unexpected and it actually really floored me. The narration was also quite amazing. Indeed, it was so poetic in spite the fact that the material was dealing with the closest thing to hell you can imagine. It was apparently written by some guy called Jean Cayrol who was, unsurprisingly, a survivor from one of these death camps. Seriously, how incredibly difficult it must have been for him to write this stuff only 10 years after this nightmare took place? In general, it is quite incredible that they came up with such a movie so soon after the actual events. Eventually, I think that, back then, people already had the need to remember, to look back to what happen, even if it was so horrible because, if we donât, we might forget it or not believe something so horrendous might have ever taken place.2 years, 11 months ago

Notes: Unfortunately, the day I was supposed to watch this movie, I tested positive to Covid so I had to stay at home and skip this one but, according to the other members of our film club, it was actually really good.
