Notes: Even though it is supposedly a huge classic, I just don't agree. As a matter of fact, in my opinion, it is actually the most overrated movie directed by Steven Spielberg. To makes things clear, of course, the movie is not awful, absolutely not. In fact, the opening is one of the best introductions I have ever seen. This is what war is about, just a big slaughter party. But then, it was just the beginning and the rest of the movie had nothing to do with this great intro. It is a little bit like 'Titanic'. In 'Titanic, even though the last 45 minutes are really impressive, they have actually nothing to do with the rest of the movie which is basically a rather basic love story. Here, you have a similar situation. You start up with the best war scene ever made but, then, the rest of the movie is dealing with something entirely different. Basically, they send a whole platoon to save 1 guy... Do you really believe Obama or (even better) George W. Bush would do such a thing ? I don't think so. And even if they did, it wouldn't make the story really much more interesting to me. Basically, in my opinion, it is just some kind of Disney version of 'Apocalypse Now' and it just didn't match with the greatest depiction of the D-Day. Of course, it is not a bad movie, the directing and acting were really solid and it is worth a look but I really don't see why it is supposed to be such a great movie.2 years, 7 months ago

Notes: Honestly, I really had a hard time with this flick. I donât know, maybe I wasnât in the right mood when I watched it. Basically, it is an uber-romantic tale about a doomed love story and, right from the start, they make sure you wonât have any hope that they would end up together one way or the other. At first, I was worried that they would never speak to each other and I thought âGirl, either youâre going to talk to that man or youâre going to do something else with your lifeâ but, at last, they got together so there was some hope but, then, he apparently forgets about her(!) and she gets pregnant in the mean time. Since they seemed deeply in love that seemed rather far-fetched but, well. I was ok with the fact that he didnât recognize her the 2nd time they met since they barely talked to each other when they lived in the same building but it was fairly unconvincing that he wouldnât recognize her when he meets her a 3rd time maybe a decade later. So you see where it goes, you either love that kind of story or you donât. Personally, Iâm not a huge fan but I have to admit it, the directing was very neat, the actors involved were quite good so it was still a decent watch. 2 years, 7 months ago

Notes: Since I saw again âHow to Get the Man's Foot Outta Your Assâ recently, I thought it was really time to see this notorious movie directed by Melvin Van Peebles. Well, basically, it was a similar situation that we had with âEd Woodâ which was a great movie about the making-off of âPlan 9 from Outer Spaceâ which was pretty awful. I mean, this movie was not as bad as âPlan 9 from Outer Spaceâ was but, to be honest, it wasnât really good either. Indeed, half of it was about Sweetback running around and the other half was pretty much impossible to follow. Furthermore, it was rather poorly shot with some weak performances. And, yet, while watching this flick, you shouldnât forget that it was a huge milestone. Indeed, pretty much like âBlack Pantherâ released in 2018 displayed that there could be successful blockbusters with a all black cast and crew, this movie broke many stereotypes concerning the black folks and even launched the Blaxploitation genre. Furthermore, that was also the good thing about watching âHow to Get the Man's Foot Outta Your Assâ, was that it made clear that making this movie was difficult, mostly on a financial level but not only, and this struggle also deserves some respect. 2 years, 7 months ago

Notes: Since this movie had a really solid reputation, I had some rather high expectations but, to be honest, I thought it was actually slightly disappointing. Of course, it was better than the remake starring Jude Law but, somehow, I had a hard time to get into this movie. Personally, I think it is because the morals and opinions have changed. I mean, 50 years ago, when this movie was released, you can imagine the impact that this libertine character must have had but, nowadays, we have a different relationship with sexuality (30 years of AIDS epidemic didnât help either I guess). I also had a hard time with this guy, Alfie. Obviously, Michael Caine shouldnât be blamed as he gave, as usual, a brilliant performance but I just didnât like this character much. Indeed, he is really unlikeable, obnoxious and, even though the makers try to convince you that he is pretty cool, I thought he was actually rather pathetic. I donât know, maybe I was in the wrong mood the first time I watched it and I should maybe give it a 2nd chance one day.2 years, 7 months ago

Notes: After all these years, I still think this movie is actually rather overrated. In fact, I even saw it twice in the movie theater when it was released. The first time, I was completely blown away and I thought it was great. But the second time, I could step back and pay more attention to the small details. I won't deny it, the visuals and the mood were quite impressive and it remains an entertaining feature but, in my opinion, the story is actually rather shallow. I mean, it is basically a typical story about an omnipotent serial-killer who knows everything, even the future apparently and the guy seemed also to have a massive budget at his disposal. Personally, I always had some issue with this genre because it is always really preposterous and this movie was not an exception, I'm afraid, and the amount of plot holes was just massive. On top of that, when you think about it, there was in fact barely any investigation whatsoever, the two cops were just some puppets at the mercy of a thankless plot which made the whole thing even more tedious for me. Eventually, it is just nicely done but, at the end of the day, not really deep whatsoever. Anyway, even though it is considered a major masterpiece, I believe it is a well made but still rather generic psychopath thriller.2 years, 7 months ago

Notes: I wasnât really sure what to expect from this movie but since it was directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, those guys are some of the most highly regarded directors ever and they are usually considered responsible for what many calls âThe Golden Age of British Cinemaâ. By now, I have seen 4 movies directed by them and, from all those movies I have seen, this is the only one I didn't really enjoy. I mean, the title was pretty good but the scope was rather small this time, compared to their other productions which were much more ambitious and, to be honest, I didn't care much about the story and the characters involved. I mean, the whole thing was well directed and it was not bad at all but I didn't really enjoyed it probably because it was not my cup of tea, I guess. Notes: Basically, when I was studying in college, I went studying for a year in Cambridge and I took part in this film class which was really awesome. The idea was to watch every week a movie, starring from the silent era moving forward towards the 90âs and we would then discuss the movie seen during the class. So, this flick was one selected by our teacher and, of course, I had some rather huge expectations, especially since it was directed by the great Federico Fellini. Unfortunately, even though this movie has quite a stellar reputation, I didnât like it much, Iâm afraid. Basically, it was one of his whimsical tales, without much of a plot and this one was even downright psychedelic. Maybe I wasnât in the right mood when I watched it but I had a rather hard time to see why it was supposed to be so great. Anyway, even if it didnât really work for me, I still think it is worth a look though.2 years, 7 months ago
