Notes: In fact, I did see the damned thing back then with my buddies in the movie theater when it was released. At the time, it was not yet hailed as a great classic and, to be honest, I thought it was a decent watch but nothing really amazing. Since then, I have re-watched it at least 3 times but I still don't get why everybody seems to think it is one of the best movies ever made. I mean, it did look awesome, the directing was off the chart, Russel Crowe delivered an impressive performance but what about the story? Yes, it was entertaining but it was also really nothing ground-breaking in my opinion. I know, it is a huge classic and it is definitely a solid feature but it is not much more than that, Iā€™m afraid. In my opinion, at the end of the day, the story was in fact a rather generic peplum and it didn't add much to the formula. In this style, I'd rather watch 'Spartacus' or 'Ben Hur' anytime. At least, thanks to this movie and after struggling for many years, Ridley Scott finally managed to make a massive come-back becoming one of the most productive directors at work nowadays. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it is in fact a decent action movie, I'll give you that, but it is definitely not a great flick.

Forrest Gump
Notes: It is basically one of those movies that has created through the years some pretty strong reactions. Indeed, on one hand, some people think that this movie is just great, a timeless classic and one of the best movies ever made while, on the other hand, there is a whole bunch of people who think that this movie is not that great all and that it is in fact one of the most overrated features ever made. Personally, Iā€™m afraid I belong to the 2nd group. First of all, the main issue I always had with this movie was with its lead character, the infamous Forrest Gump. I mean, the guy is just so stupid and irritating! I know he is supposed to be touching and all but it didn't work for me at all. And the message it gives... "it doesn't matter if you're stupid or defective, as long as you can play some ping-pong, you will be fine". I thought it was pretty bad and offensive towards mentally impaired peopleā€¦ I know many people see this film as some kind of fairy tale and I have been told so many times I shouldn't take it so seriously and I dig that but it just doesn't work for me. At least, I would have to admit that it is well made and fairly entertaining but not much more than that.

Breaking the Waves
Notes: Iā€™m pretty sure it was the first movie directed by Lars von Trier which I have seen but, to be honest, I didnā€™t like it much. Indeed, when it was released, it was universally heralded so I had some pretty huge expectations but I thought it was rather disappointing. I mean, it is not that it was a bad movie, far from it. Indeed, I really enjoyed Lars von Trierā€™s directing and I could see why this movie was so loved. Furthermore, I have to admit, Emily Watson was absolutely brilliant in this. Indeed, her performance was really impressive, one of the best acting debut ever, and it is a real shame that she is so criminally underrated nowadays. Still, I didnā€™t really connect with this flick. Indeed, the tone was really really grim and gloomy (a trademark in Lars von Trierā€™s work) and I had a hard time to get into this story about this seemingly innocent woman being terribly mistreated by this *sshole. Above all, I really didnā€™t like by this ending with those bells in the skyā€¦ As a matter of fact, I even despised this ending, seriously. I donā€™t know, Iā€™m not a religious man and I thought it was just an awful way to conclude all the unpleasant things that happen during this flick. Still, I might give it a 2nd chance one day since it is a very well regarded feature.

Coming back on this discussion, basically, Ebert and Siskel did think that the movie was rather well made and therefore not a total disaster so a 2.5/4 rating did make sense. Basically, they thought i

LĆ©on: The Professional
Notes: I actually remember very well when it was released in France. Back then, before it became an international cult classic, it was a huge success in France and virtually everyone went to see it and bragged about how awesome the whole thing was. Personally, I saw it maybe a year later after its release and I was expecting something really really impressive but, eventually, I was amazed about how underwhelming the whole thing was. I mean, obviously, it was actually not bad at all. Indeed, the directing was solid (Luc Besson can definitely direct a movie) and Natalie Portman in her first part was pretty impressive but I still donā€™t think that it was really amazing. The point is that the story definitely had some potential but, not only it felt rather rotten (the director's cut had actually some pedophile love scenes between Jean Reno and Natalie Portman) but, above all, it felt terribly pretentious. Honestly, most of the dialogues were at best cheesy and most of the time even rather pathetic. At least, Iā€™m not the only one who didnā€™t like this flick and both Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel were rather dismissive towards the damned thing. Anyway, I have to admit that it is far from a being a bad movie but I simply donā€™t see what is supposed to be so great about it.

The Sixth Sense
Notes: I remember when this movie came out as if it was yesterday. Indeed, I actually saw it in the USA when I was there on holiday. At the time, everybody was talking about this movie. Every time you would talk about movies someone would say at some point 'Have you seen The Sixth Sense? Dude, that was just awesome. I was just blown away by this twist ending !'. I have to admit it, I didn't get the twist before the end but, to be honest, I never felt it was such a strong ending. In my opinion, it was actually rather underwhelming as I thought it was a cheap way to give some supposedly 'deep' meaning to an otherwise decent story. I mean, the directing was pretty good, Bruce Willis gave a decent performance and Haley Joel Osment was definitely impressive but, in my opinion, the concept was actually completely bonkers. Indeed, why doesnā€™t Malcolm notice that he is not able to connect to his wife, his colleagues or anyone else? Well, simply because ghosts choose to see what they want to see... Just like all the other twists developed by Shyamalan in his next movies, it was a just terribly weak way to cover up some major plot holes. It's too bad because it was actually a really good story and it is a real shame that Shyamalan tricked the audience by making us believe that Malcolm was actually alive during the whole thing. I mean, seriously, what did it really add to the story? I have to admit that this movie is not bad at all and actually really entertaining but, in my opinion, this so-called great twist pretty much ruined a strong story.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)
Notes: To be honest, I have to admit that I had actually never heard of the Harlem Cultural Festival that took place in 1969 but Iā€™m not the only one. Indeed, while Woodstock became the most famous festival that ever took place, this festival was actually largely forgotten, at least, by the mainstream audience. What was even more surprising was that they actually did film everything but it took a staggering 50 years before someone finally released the damned thing. Apparently, back then, nobody cared about spreading this magnificent piece of Black power, love and creativity which was basically censored in spite of its actually very positive message. Concerning the festival itself, I have to admit that I didnā€™t know about half of the performers but it didnā€™t matter and they were all really good. The fact that appearing on this stage meant so much for them really transpired in their performances which were very often quite electrifying. Eventually, the only thing that prevented this movie from becoming really epic was the fact that they reduced 40 hours of footage to only 2 hours. I mean, the documentary about Woodstock was lasting 3 hours for a reason and Iā€™m pretty sure it wouldnā€™t have had the same impact if it would have been shorter. In this case, with an extra hour or even more, they could have fleshed out even more some of the performances or some portraits of the artists and people involved. Still, it wasnā€™t a deal-breaker and the damned thing was really awesome to behold. For more info : Top 10 best movies 2021
