An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Catherine Zeta-Jones, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I was actually surprised by how disappointing the damned thing actually turned out to be. It’s too bad because it really had some” read more

Notes: This movie was in fact Bob Fosse's directing début. Fosse was basically some kind of legend in the musical world, responsible for classics such as 'Chicago'. Anyway, with his directing début, Fosse decided to make some kind of musical remake of 'The Nights of Cabiria' (which I haven't seen) and it starred Shirley MacLaine who gave here her typical quirky performance. I mean, I have nothing against her, she has had an impressive career going through 6 decades (!) but she basically always gives the same performance, half sparkling and half obnoxious. Back then, she was much younger and delivered here a decent performance and the songs and dances were not bad at all as well. Unfortunately, like most of the musicals, I thought the story was nothing really amazing, I didn't care much about the characters involved and, honestly, I was bored sometimes.

chosen by Ietje Notes: I have to admit that I had no idea what it was about before it started and it took me a while before I discovered that Céline Sciamma went for some magic-realism. Unfortunately, I’m not a great fan of the genre. To me, it felt like some kind of French Indie version of ‘Back to the Future’ and I have never really been fascinated by this idea of spending some time with one of your parents while being the same age. Fortunately, Ietje had some very interesting insights who helped me to better grasp this concept. Indeed, according to her, this movie was not really about time traveling but more about showing how a young child might try to cope with such a dramatic event. From this perspective, the movie became much more interesting. However, I wish they tried to cut down the dialogues and focused more on the young girls spending some time together, like any other kids. Indeed, at least half of their conversations were so obviously written by adults and would never come out from such young children. For example, at some point, towards the end, one of the girls asks if she was ever wanted by her parents. Sure, I can imagine that kids might be wondering about such matters but there is no way a 8 year old would us these exact words. Anyway, even if I didn’t feel much connection with this material, it was still a really intriguing movie. (Sep. 2021)

Notes: First of all, to be honest, I have to admit that I have never been a huge musical fan. As a matter of fact, I saw ‘La La Land’ already a couple of times and even though it was a big critical and commercial success, I still had a hard time to care about the damned thing. Well, coming back to our main feature, since it is a huge classic, I still had to watch it at some point. Well, even though I usually prefer Gene Kelly, I must admit that Fred Astaire was really awesome in this flick. Indeed, together with Ginger Rogers, they had some great chemistry and they gave some really strong dance scenes here. Furthermore, I laughed a few times, above all thanks to the supporting cast which was pretty good. Still, even though I'm well aware that it is inherent to the genre, the plot was just so silly and frivolous and I really had a hard time to care about the story and the characters involved. Still, it is and remains a classic and it is definitely worth a look.

Ride Lonesome
Notes: Eventually, even though I have to admit that it was a decent vintage Western, I thought it was also nothing really mind-blowing after all. I mean, I did like the directing and the acting was not bad either but, in my opinion, the story was very thin (with a running time of 70 minutes, it was not really surprising). I have to admit it, I did see it on the BBC without subtitbles so I may have missed some bits but I still don't think it was anything really amazing. Basically, you have about 5 characters, they talk a lot, ride their horses and shoot their guns a little bit and that was about it. Still, like I said before, the whole thing looked pretty good, the actors delivered some solid performances and it was pretty neat to see James Coburn in his acting debut.

A good movie

“To be honest, I have never been a fan of Formula 1 but since Michael Schumacher was such a legend, I was quite eager to check this new documentary on Netflix. Indeed, when I was growing up in the 90’s, Schumacher was the rising star in this sport facing such legends like Alain Prost and Ayrton Sen” read more

Funny Face
Notes: Well, even if it was watchable, I can't say I really enjoyed this movie though. I have to confess, I haven’t seen as many movies as I wish starring Audrey Hepburn but this movie must be the most boring one I have seen so far. I mean, sure, Hepburn was just really charming as usual and Fred Astaire was definitely a fine dancer (I would always prefer Gene Kelly though) but the story was just way too fluffy for my taste. Obviously, I’m fully aware that it is a trademark in this genre but it doesn’t change the fact that the whole thing felt rather tedious. Furthermore, I don’t think that Astaire and Hepburn had a really great chemistry. I mean, I don’t know if you have noticed it but Audrey Hepburn’s characters were always falling in love with some much older guys and maybe it was fine back in those days but if they would do the same thing today, it would look rather creepy.
