Note: Alright, pretty much like Italy, this entry is a little bit âundeservedâ but I thought it was still fun to add this country. Basically, the last time I went to France on holiday (like pretty much every year), my sister had rented a villa all the way down south. Anyway, when it was time to go back home in the Netherlands, not only we had to cross France almost all the way from the bottom to the top but, for some reason, the GPS made us also cross Luxembourg. So, for about 45 mins, we were then driving in this country which I had never seen before. The funny thing with this country, something I have actually never seen in any other country before, was that there was not even a board saying something like âWelcome to Luxembourgâ (or maybe I just missed the damned thing but I doubt it). Anyway, except for the highway, I didnât see anything else of this country.

Notes: What made this movie worked so well was the fact that it was a movie about surfing, made by surfers, for the surfers. Well, the first striking thing was the fact it was shot without any recorded sound. Indeed, instead, they had some rather annoying soundtrack and some non-stop comments from Bruce Brown, the director of this movie. Even though this narration might seem silly sometimes, or even discriminating when they get to Africa, when the guy talks about the technicality of surfing, especially for someone like me who has never been on a surfer board, it was actually quite fascinating. I have to admit that I was expecting them to go to many more exotic locations like South America or Asia but, after all, they spent most of their time only in Africa and Australia. I was also rather bewildered by the fact that, in HawaĂŻ, there were some pretty great waves and the weather was constantly fine through the whole year so whatâs the point of going anywhere else? On the other hand, you could argue that the point was in fact to discover some unknown surfing spots, some places where nobody had surfed before, and to discover the world in the process which was something rather uncommon back in the 60âs. Indeed, another impressive thing about this movie was how old it actually is. While watching these guys doing some amazing tricks on their surf, you might think it was shot 20 or 30 years ago but, in fact, it was made a whopping 60 years ago.

“To be honest, I wasnât expecting much from this flick but, since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, the damned thing was just so damned long, I think it was the longest movie ever made by Adam Sandler. Seriously, if there is no valid reason why some ” read more

Notes: Basically, even though the damned thing has a really solid reputation, I thought it was a rather standard Western story. Indeed, it was a generic tale about some simple farmers who are bullied by some evil cattle baron and, of course, a mysterious stranger passes by and saves the day. Seriously, it wasnât original at all and it was completely predictable but I guess I shouldn't forget that this Western was made 60 years ago and it was made before many other Westerns would use afterwards the same template. Still, the directing and acting were solid and I did like the attention they gave to the details. It was also interesting to notice that there was barely any shooting during the whole thing, there was one big fight though. In fact, the main character was without a gun during the whole thing and it was a nice approach. Indeed, instead of making the shootings look cool like most other Westerns, they displayed here that, even though such shootings were sometimes inevitable, the consequences were usually dreadfull.

Notes: First of all, the damned thing was just so damned long, I think it was the longest movie ever made by Adam Sandler. Seriously, if there is no valid reason why some brainless action flicks like âTransformersâ or âFast and Furious 23â should last more than 2 hours, well, this rule should definitely apply also for all the moronic comedies starring Sandler. Still, I have to admit that it turned out to be slightly better than âThe Do-Overâ but it wasnât such a difficult goal to achieve. Indeed, the concept was not bad and it was not completely random. Still, even though they tried to sell the idea that the main character was a hilarious new creation, in fact, Sandler played his usual moronic cringe-inducing guy, basically, a talentless hack who was never funny whatsoever. However, only half of the movie was about his âexploitsâ as a manager and the other half was about some really unlikely love story with one of his talents. Unfortunately, this romance was never convincing whatsoever and, eventually, the movie was never really about this manager believing in the talents of his protĂ©gĂ© but, actually, it was the other way around which was just rather weird. Anyway, it was rather sad to see a lovely girl played by the gorgeous and talented Jennifer Hudson falling in love with this obnoxious man for really no reason whatsoever but, apparently, it is another rule that, in every Sandler movie, he has to get the nicest girls around even if his characters are borderline awful.

Notes: First of all, , I thought it was pretty awesome to see Catherine Deneuve at such a young age. Indeed, she is such a terrific actress, she was already awesome back then and the more movies I watch starring this actress, the more she fascinates me. What about the movie itself ? To be honest, even though I thought it was indeed pretty good with some nice songs, at the end of the day, it was obvious that it was not my thing. For example, all the dialogue in the film is sung and while the fan of the genre praised this choice, I always thought it was a rather tedious gimmick. Still even though I have never been a big fan of musicals, I liked this one. Indeed, I can't deny the fact that it was very well made and it definitely had some quirky qualities. Since this movie was a big critical success, a few years later, Jacques Demy would make another musical called âLes demoiselles de Rochefortâ, also starring the lovely Catherine Deneuve but also her sister, Francoise Dorleac.
