The Silence of the Lambs
Notes: It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably rewatch it at some point. In fact, my wife is actually a huge fan of those thrillers involving serial-killers and I'm pretty sure this movie is her favorite one in this genre. Personally, I actually always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, of course, it is a classic, it is very well made and entertaining and Anthony Hopkins was just great in a star making performance. And yet, this movie exactly embodies what bothers me in this genre. Indeed, while my wife might argue that those things actually really happens in real life, I tend to roll my eyes in pure disbelief during the whole thing. The worst gimmick in this genre, in my opinion and aside of the obligatory twist ending, is the whole concept of the omnipotent serial killer who hears and sees pretty much everything, can apparently predict the future and has access to a limitless amount of cash. I mean, don't misunderstand me, I do like this movie, it is really entertaining but, in my opinion, even though it might be the best movie in this genre, it still uses some of his worst tricks and therefore it makes it difficult for me to be completely blown away by the whole thing.

Battleship Potemkin
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. By now, I have seen many very old classics and I have noticed that it is very often hit-and-miss with such timeless features. Indeed, with some of them, I could see right away why they have been heralded through all the years but, for some others, it seems more that they were groundbreaking when they were released but they seem to be rather dated nowadays. Well, in this case, with this movie, it thought it was pretty good and, from a technical point of view, Eisenstein was quite a genius who came up with some movie technics that were never used before but, still, was it really such a fascinating story? I’m not so sure. I mean, it is probably the best propaganda film ever made but, even so, the propaganda genre has its limitations and, as a result, this movie still didn’t really blow me away. Anyway, even if it didn’t become one of my all time favorite movies, it was still a really interesting watch and it is definitely worth a look.

“I wasn’t expecting much from the damned thing but since it was starring Johnny Depp, I was still eager to check it out. Well, I won’t blame Brad Furman who’s a solid director as the whole thing looked decent enough and I think he did what he could with this material. Indeed, to be honest, the ” read more

Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages
Notes: Eventually, it is quite a weird flick, some very old documentary (almost 100 years old now) dealing with some even older superstitions mainly involving witchcraft in the Middle-Ages. It is rather funny that it is considered a horror flick when it is supposed to be a documentary. I mean, there were some rather eerie stuff, I’ll give you that but it doesn’t really qualify as ‘horror’, at least, that’s my opinion. Honestly, the whole thing feels pretty dated nowadays and you might wonder if it was really scientifically accurate. Still, even though the educational aspect might be questionable, it was still an interesting watch and it has definitely some historically value. It is also striking that the makers were rather dismissive towards the Middle-Ages beliefs but the way they put ‘hysteria’ on some vastly varied mental diseases was quite priceless (of course, in the 20’s, psychology was a rather new science). Anyway, I’m not really sure if it is really a great flick but it is still a very intriguing movie.

“Even though this movie was rather poorly received when it was released, since it was directed by Robert Zemeckis, I was still eager to check it out. Well, Zemeckis tried here again to adapt an acclaimed documentary into a feature film but, pretty much like with 'The Walk', the whole thing felt serio” read more

Roma
Notes: Well, even though I did like this movie, to be honest, I can't say I was really blown away by the whole thing. Sure, after 'Cold War', it was another really gorgeous black-and-white feature and, as usual with Cuaron, the directing was just really strong. Indeed, it felt like using a travelling machine going back to Mexico almost 50 years ago. Unfortunately, I was never really grabbed by this tale. The whole thing was basically some kind of love letter to Cuaron's beloved nanny and while it was sweet and while it must have meant a lot to the Mexican master, I didn't care much for it, I'm afraid. I don't know, maybe I was missing some social commentary, maybe since I'm a leftist, I had a hard time to see what was so great about this woman who spent her life taking care of the kids of some middle-class folks. The fact that, after more than 2 hours, you didn't learn much about the characters didn't help either. Anyway, even if it didn't really work for me, it was still impressive to see Alfonso Cuaron delivering once again something completely different than his previous work.
