Notes: Apparently, the film was originally meant to be directed by Orson Welles and starring Charles Chaplin, but Chaplin backed out at the last moment, saying that he had never had anyone direct him before and didn't want to start. Can you imagine this combination?!? Eventually, Chaplin directed the thing himself and regarded the film as the cleverest and most brilliant film of his career. Unfortunately for him, it was a huge flop when it was released which was not really surprising when you think about it. Indeed, Chaplin was beloved for a playing the same character for years and, suddenly, he decided to do something entirely different and, a usual, the ruthless audience wouldn't have it. Personally, even though I didn't enjoy it as much as his previous movies, I still think it was pretty good and it is now highly regarded. You can't deny that it was way ahead of its time, some kind of lugubrious dark comedy. As a result, it is much more cynical and dark than his previous work but I really enjoyed it and I will probably re-watch it some day to make up my mind about it.3 years, 8 months ago

Notes: Honestly, I thought it was slightly disappointing. I mean, it was visually appealing and I thought that the cast (Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luena, Maribel Verdu) all gave some solid performances but I seriously failed to see what was so amazing about this story. Pretty much like āChildren of menā, another universally heralded movie directed by Cuaron, I didnāt really connect with the story. I mean, it was not bad at all, it was even quite intriguing but I thought it never really took off. Basically, it is supposed to be a steamy affair but I really had a hard time to care about the characters. I mean, good for them, they managed to explore their sex life but I didnāt think it was really that compelling. I donāt know, maybe I wasnāt in the right mood and I might re-watch it in the future to make up my mind for good. I mean, donāt misunderstand me, I actually liked the damned thing, itās just that I didnāt get why it was so highly regarded.3 years, 8 months ago

Notes: I canāt believe I havenāt seen any movies directed by Akira Kurosawa for such a long time. A few years ago, I was doing a good job and ended up watching 13 of his movies but, by now, it has been ages since I saw another one of his movies. It is a real shame but maybe I will pick it up again at some point. Anyway, this flick is probably one of his most famous ones and therefore I was really eager to check it out. Indeed, it was a huge inspiration for Georges Lucas before creating āStar Warsā as R2-D2 and C-3PO were pretty much copied on Tahei and Matashichi. Apparently, Kurosawa wanted this time to make something more commercial and accessible after making some artistic features like āRashomonā, and indeed, in box-office terms, it was one of his most successful films at the time. Well, I thought it was pretty good and quite entertaining but it wasnāt one of his best movies in my opinion. Anyway, even if it didnāt really blow me away, it was still a pretty good flick though.3 years, 8 months ago
