Notes: Even if I really liked this movie, to be honest, I have to admit that it didn’t really blow me away though. The main issue, I guess, was that there were some big chunks of time during which nothing much really happened. Still, there is no doubt that Nicolas Roeg delivered here a fascinating movie above all thanks to some stellar cinematography and editing. Indeed, the whole thing started with the most nightmarish intro you could imagine. Afterwards, Venice had never look so spooky before and the damned thing was just seriously ominous and unsettling. Of course, the fact that most of the action took place abroad also increased the sense of alienation experienced by the two main characters. On top of that, Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie also gave some of their best performances and got involved in one of the most notorious sex scenes ever made. It’s interesting that many viewers consider it as one of the best horror movies when in fact it is clearly really different than your average horror flick. Eventually, I think I should rewatch this movie at some point to make up my mind for good about the damned thing. Anyway, even if I wasn't completely sold, it was still a really strong psychological thriller though. 3 years, 9 months ago

Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this flick and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Sure, it might not seem to be anything really mind-blowing if you would compare it to something coming out nowadays (after all, it is a very short movie done with a $150 budget only) but the damned thing was actually seriously groundbreaking when it was released. Indeed, even if the story was very basic, it is still considered as one of the very first movies with some kind of plot. Anyway, it must have been priceless to be in the movie theatre when this cowboy started to shoot the audience as many people went apesh*t since they had never experienced anything like this before. 3 years, 9 months ago

Notes: Considering the fact that I’m not a huge fan of musicals in general, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick but since it is a classic, I was still eager to check it out. With the first dance sequence, I got kind of worried and thought it would be a rather long and boring watch. Fortunately, as soon as Frank Sinatra and, above all, Marlon Brando showed up, it became much more enjoyable. I mean, Frank Sinatra was pretty good but I was above all impressed by Marlon Brando. Back then, the guy was really on fire, probably the best actor around and he shows he could take anything, even a musical, and make the whole thing actually quite spellbinding to watch. Of course, he was incredibly charismatic but it goes further than this as he gave his character some extra layers which made him really stand out from the crowd. Furthermore, I actually liked the general ambiguous attitude towards gambling and drinking (after watching this flick, does it look really look so bad to you?). 3 years, 10 months ago

Notes: To be honest, I think it is rather difficult to judge this movie. Indeed, it is around 60 years old and after watching 100s of more modern SF features like '2001: A Space Odissey ', 'Prometheus' or 'Interstellar' which had access to some more advanced technology and some much bigger budgets, the whole thing now looks pretty cheesy. On top of that, from the moment you see Leslie Nielsen showing up on the screen, you expect him to crack up some stupid jokes every 5 minutes. And yet, we shouldn't forget that this movie had a huge impact on all the Science-Fiction movies that came afterwards. Indeed, at the time, the studios didn’t care much for the genre and it was the very first time that a SF feature was given a large budget. On top of that, the story was actually pretty good and I was quite taken by this mysterious world. Indeed, they finally became aware that they should handle this kind of tales more or less seriously and it really worked. That’s the great thing about Science-Fiction, everything is possible and the only limitation is your own imagination (okay, a decent budget might help as well). Anyway, even if it didn't grow old very well, it is still a pretty good SF feature.3 years, 10 months ago

Notes: We don't hear much from John Landis nowadays but, back in the 80's, he was quite a successful director and one of his biggest success was this werewolf flick which has now reached a cult status. First of all, to mix comedy and horror is a tricky challenge and most movies usually fail miserably but Landis did a good job here and sometimes you might wonder if you should be laughing or be horrified by the whole thing. Still, I must say, like most of the movies in this genre, it did take forever until the main character finally became a werewolf. However, I have to admit that the end result was really impressive though. Indeed, back in those days, they didn't have any CGI but only some awesome make-up and it still stands up fine 40 years later. Unfortunately, it was also an issue with this flick. Indeed, basically, the make-up was so impressive that it did upstage the whole story as a result. Furthermore, considering the story itself, sure, it was entertaining enough but, to be honest, it was nothing really amazing. On top of that, it was rather silly that the doctor would run her own investigation and, even though Jenny Agutter was really lovely, I thought it was hardly believable that a nurse would bring home a patient to have some hot sex with him. Anyway, even if I think it is in fact slighly overrated, it is still a classic though. 3 years, 10 months ago
