Return of the Jedi
Notes: Obviously, I have seen this movie many times when I was a kid but I still wanted to check it again. After all these years, it is still usually considered as the weakest installment of the original trilogy. Even though you could blame the Ewoks, I thought they were actually pretty cool but they were definitely another piece of evidence that this trilogy is actually pretty childish. It is not necessarily a bad thing but I just believe the whole thing is much more enjoyable when you watch it the first time when you are around 10-12 years old. No, the main issue in my opinion is that this sequel is almost a remake of the first movie. Indeed, the main plot is basically to destroy another death star against all odds. Sure, it was handled differently but the goal and outcome were pretty much the same. Still, it doesn't mean it was not a really entertaining flick though. Indeed, in my opinion, the Ewoks were childish but pretty cool, the whole extended intro with Jabba the Hutt was just really awesome and I really liked the way they developed the complex relationship between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Eventually, even if it might not be the best movie in this trilogy, it is still a fine blockbuster.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it had won the Gouden Kalf for the Best Dutch movie of the year, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, it was the first movie I saw dealing with an acid attack victim so, only therefore, it got some few extra points from me. I also b” read more

Whisky Galore! (1949)
Notes: Well, it turned out to be a rather odd movie praising the virtues of alcohol, especially whisky. Sure, it was all rather innocent but it’s difficult to imagine making such a movie nowadays (in fact, they did remake the very same story a couple of years ago but, unsurprisingly, it was quickly forgotten). To be honest, I have to admit I don’t have much knowledge of the Ealing comedies. I mean, I did watch ‘Kind Heart and Coronets’, probably their biggest classic, but I was only amused at best so I can’t say I’m really into their kind of humour. With this movie, the tricky thing was also that you pretty much knew everything that would happen from the very start so the main (and, as far as I was concerned, only) thing to enjoy were the colourful inhabitants of this small island. I have to admit that these characters were indeed quite entertaining but, to be honest, they were barely developed at all and I still wonder how Scottish people feel about this movie as they were portrayed as some massive alcoholics who can’t live without their daily doses of whisky. Anyway, even if I wasn’t really blown away by the damned thing, it was still a decent watch though.

A good movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, even though I had heard about the college admissions scandal, I didn’t really know in details what exactly happened back then so I was quite curious to” read more

Outside the Wire
Notes: With its combination of ‘The Terminator’ with ‘Training Day’, the damned thing certainly felt rather derivative but, to be honest, I have to admit that the concept actually had some potential. On top of that, the two main characters were quite charismatic. Unfortunately, even if it wasn’t a total disaster, it still didn’t really work though. Indeed, even if the concept was not bad, the story was just really weak. Afterwards, I came to the conclusion that the whole story was pretty much built up around their wish to hide for as long as possible the fact that Leo was actually a rogue robot. As a result, this tale was just terribly and unnecessarily murky but, eventually, nothing said or happening actually really mattered and this approach completely weakened the story. To make things worse, when the main character finally found out what was actually going on, Leo pretty much disappeared until the final climax which was also rather disappointing. Basically, it was a rather dumb movie with actually a few really neat ideas and they should have dropped all these generic action scenes and, instead, have most of the movie being about the two characters arguing about the meaning of life. It’s such a pity that such movies dealing with superior AI always turn them into some wannabe mass murderers.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Notes: To be honest, even though I respect this movie and I believe it deserves its reputation, I can't say I'm really a big fan though. Even so, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and it is definitely a must see for any decent horror fan. Indeed, it is absolutely the biggest classic directed by the great master of horror, Wes Craven and, on top of that, it was also the acting debut for Johnny Depp. Above all, this flick really had a great concept. Indeed, this time, the big guy was not real but came in your sleep to kill you which was really neat. And of course, Freddy Krueger turned out to be one of the best bad guys ever created even if, later in the future, he became some kind of parody of himself. I guess, it didn't blow me away because I think the whole thing didn't grow old very well and some bits look nowadays pretty cheesy even if some of the creepy stuff is still pretty effective after all these years. Furthermore, the performance delivered by Heather Langenkamp was sometimes decent but sometimes also seriously weak. Still, the concept remains pretty awesome and this flick has been highly influential on all the slasher features that came afterwards.

Masculin Feminin
Notes: ‘A bout de souffle’ is and will remain one of my favorite movies forever and I have been following Godard ever since his masterpiece really blew me away but, unfortunately, no one of his movies have reached this level of awesomeness, at least not in my opinion. The point is that, pretty soon in his career, his movies started to get pretty cryptic and became harder and harder to follow and, nowadays, except for a few die-hard fans, we all pretty much agree that his work has become some incomprehensible pseudo-intellectual and political mix, a mix I always had a hard time to appreciate. This movie is a pretty good example. I mean, it has a pretty good reputation and it was actually quite intriguing but it was so hard to follow, I can’t say I really loved the damned thing. Still, the cast was pretty cool, it included the always awesome Jean-Pierre LĂ©aud, the most popular actor among the French new wave, and also Chantal Goya who was really lovely at the time but she would actually end up singing some really lame children songs in the 80’s. Anyway, even if I don’t think it is a masterpiece whatsoever, it remains a typical Godard effort and I did enjoy it.

A Question of Silence
Notes: Well, even though it is a visually rather ugly movie, the material turned out to be however really unique and quite fascinating to behold. Indeed, I think it was the most feminist movie I have ever seen and it was clearly made by a woman, about women, for the women. Of course, you might argue that what happened in this movie was rather far-fetched but, what was more interesting, was the underlying message. Basically, it boils down to that, in this man dominated world, women have always been, oppressed might too strong, but at least undermined, undervalued, vastly misunderstood and definitely not treated as equal. The downside of this approach was that, while all the women were quite complex and interesting to behold, the male characters were on the other hand barely developed whatsoever and were reduced to pretty much some clueless sexist morons. On top of that, I was not really sure about the beehive behaviour displayed by all these women. Indeed, to be honest, I have some doubts that the female community is so harmonious and that they have such a great understanding of each other with some seemingly telepathic powers. Finally, we are obviously supposed to be rooting for these 3 women but imagine if 3 men would kill a woman so randomly and so violently? I’m pretty sure that they would be considered as ‘monsters’. On the other hand, you might argue that white straight men will probably never have a reason to lose their sh*t like that. Anyway, it has been a while since I have seen something so original and so thought-provoking.

Cool Hand Luke
Notes: Even though I did like this movie, to be honest, I didn’t really blow me away after all. I mean, sure, it was well made and quite entertaining but, in my opinion, the whole thing was just too conventional. I don’t know, maybe I have seen too many movies about the same subject that were released afterwards. Still, there is no doubt that Paul Newman gave a really strong performance and he is probably the reason why this movie has such a great reputation. Indeed, at first, you might think that he is going to be your typical macho hero but he went much beyond that delivering a complex and really conflicted character. Basically, from the beginning until the end, you are never really sure what’s the deal with this guy. I could relate with him in the sense that I never cared about discipline and rules myself and I always got in trouble at school and, to a lesser extent, even at work, but the big difference between me and Luke is that I always had a rather healthy survival instinct. As a result, I usually knew when to stop in order to prevent some completely unfixable damages. On the other hand, Luke didn’t seem to care much about anything and displayed a total lack of self-preservation and, in spite of his awesome charisma, Newman managed to deliver one of the most destructive anti-hero I have seen. Eventually, even if the movie itself was nothing really amazing, Paul Newman was just terrific.

The Artist
Notes: Following all the hype surrounding this feature which eventually managed to win the Best Picture Academy Award (a historical event for a French movie), I obviously had to watch this movie at some point. Well, eventually, even though I did like damned thing, to be honest, I can't say I was really blown away. I don’t know, maybe it had to with the fact that, to the contrary of many viewers who loved this movie, I have seen my share of old silent movies and even though I'm a huge fan of silent comedies, especially the ones starring Charlie Chaplin, I always had a hard time enjoying silent dramas and this one was not an exception. On top of that, the story was entertaining enough but it wasn't anything I haven't seen before. However, I have to admit it, it was still an original and inspiring experiment. Indeed, the directing was really solid, they gave a good feeling about this time period and the performances were really good. I was above all impressed by Jean Dujardin who was just amazing and he really deserved to receive an Academy award for his tremendous work.
