An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Notes: We don't hear much from John Landis nowadays but, back in the 80's, he was quite a successful director and one of his biggest success was this werewolf flick which has now reached a cult status. First of all, to mix comedy and horror is a tricky challenge and most movies usually fail miserably but Landis did a good job here and sometimes you might wonder if you should be laughing or be horrified by the whole thing. Still, I must say, like most of the movies in this genre, it did take forever until the main character finally became a werewolf. However, I have to admit that the end result was really impressive though. Indeed, back in those days, they didn't have any CGI but only some awesome make-up and it still stands up fine 40 years later. Unfortunately, it was also an issue with this flick. Indeed, basically, the make-up was so impressive that it did upstage the whole story as a result. Furthermore, considering the story itself, sure, it was entertaining enough but, to be honest, it was nothing really amazing. On top of that, it was rather silly that the doctor would run her own investigation and, even though Jenny Agutter was really lovely, I thought it was hardly believable that a nurse would bring home a patient to have some hot sex with him. Anyway, even if I think it is in fact slighly overrated, it is still a classic though.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Notes: Since I'm a huge fan of Indiana Jones, of course, I just love this flick. Even though it is not my favorite one in this franchise (that would be the 3rd installment), it is still quite awesome. Indeed, when I was a kid, I saw it so many times with my father but after so many years later, I keep watching it from time to time and it is still so damned entertaining. Basically, with this movie, Steven Spielberg set up the golden rules for this mighty franchise and he introduced to us one of the greatest most iconic characters in motion picture history. Indeed, even though Harrison Ford was not even their first choice, he completely nailed this part and managed to create a character who was even more awesome than Han Solo which was quite an achievement. By the way, the big difference with this movie and 'Star Wars' is that, when I watch again nowadays this other classic, I find it slightly childish while it is not the case at all with this great flick. Anyway, not only it is technically pretty much flawless, it is also just such a fun movie and it is completely entertaining from the very first minute until the very last seconds. An average movie

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Gemma Arterton, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though the movies dealing with the UK during WWII are usually intriguing because the British people had such a different experience of this war t” read more

Notes: Well, even though many are some huge fans of this movie and would argue that it is superior to its predecessor. to be honest, I have never been completely sold by the damned thing. I mean, every time I watch it, I like it and I'm entertained throughout the whole duration but it never completey blows me away. I have to admit it though, it was visually impressive with a great mood from the beginning until the end and I also enjoyed the way they managed to bring back Ripley to this infected planet. Furthermore, Sigourney Weaver delivered a very strong performance and made Ellen Ripley a fascinating character to follow. So, what was my problem with the damned thing? Well, in my opinion, just like with all the other sequels in this franchise, it is basically a remake of the masterpiece made by Ridley Scott. Sure, they gave it a new look, some impressive action pieces and it felt more like an action flick this time around but, at the end, it basically followed the same plot. Furthermore, except for Ellen Ripley, all the characters were terribly stereotypical and barely interesting. Anyway, even if I don't think it is such a masterpiece, it is still a fine science-fiction picture.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Notes: It was the Monty Python's first 'real' movie and it has been a huge classic ever since. I remember it very well, one of my oldest childhood friends was really a huge fan and wouldn’t stop telling me that it was one of the greatest movies ever made. I ‘m pretty sure I saw this flick with him the first time around. Eventually, to my surprise, I didn’t like it much. Basically, I was never able to really connect with the jokes and I always found them more stupid than actually funny. By now, I have watched this movie already a couples of times and I have never actually really enjoyed it. I don't know, maybe I should give it another try. If I’m not mistaken, it was the first movie made by the Monty Python that I saw and, except with ‘Life of Brian’ which is indeed one of the best movies ever made, I didn’t really love any of their movies so I guess their humor is not for me. Anyway, even if I’m not a huge fan, it is still pretty much a classic though.

A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
Notes: First of all, I have to confess that I was actually really tired even before I started to watch the damned thing and I actually struggled not to fall asleep through most of the duration. It’s too bad because it was actually pretty good, in fact, it was easily one of the best movies I have seen so far directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and I guess I should check it again at some point in the future. Anyway, it was probably their most ambitious and most surreal picture, some kind of surreal romantic take on the PTSD syndrom. That was probably the most interesting thing about this flick the fact you can watch it as something quite literal but also as something quite metaphorical but, on both levels, it actually worked fine. Furthermore, it was visually really striking and they definitely went all the way to deliver something really original, especially for the time period. Eventually, the only critic I might have was that since the concept was pretty far-out, the characters were barely developed but maybe that’s what the material needed. Anyway, the cast involved still delivered some solid performances.
